Ocala Half Moon Lake

If there is one eerie place in Florida it would be here at night. You talk about being miles away from civilization this place would be it. Lee and I took a very bumping dirt road for a couple of miles. As we were driving many other roads branched out from the one we were on. At times the road became extremely thin and very hilly. It was quite obvious at the time we were the only ones out there. We were very reluctant to do this investigation as a few days ago I sent an article to the message board about how two men were found dead in the lake and there boat was found sunk underwater. I thought it sounded quite odd. Although what made me push on was the large amount of bigfoot reports and sightings that take place here. So Lee and I were hoping to catch a glimpse of something.

We parked our car at a boat ramp and the lake. Strangely enough the Lake is called Half Moon and there was Half of a Moon peaking out through the clouds ironic in some ways.

We spent sometime at the vehicle then decided to hike up the road to a parking area and for a ways to see if we could generate activity. I pretty much was here for the Cryptid aspect of things although I took a few photos and I am sure some Indian entities showed up because it was very cold in some areas.

This place was the most uncomfortable place we went to all night. There was feelings here of being watched, followed, and almost at times like an unwanted feeling. We went off the road a tinch in a parking area in a clearing with alot of grass. I figured maybe there would be some picnic benches, a trail head or something of the sort. Many areas from what I hear have caves and other things in the woods. But to my surprise there was none and some paths led to dead ends.

There was one area a beer can hung off a tree and there was only a couple foot prints near it. You could tell that perhaps people hang out here to party and drink on occasion. We came back to the vehicle and I did my bigfoot call it must had echoed for a couple miles. I did not get a response back.

So we sat in front of the lake just waiting to see what we could hear, smell or see. That is when things became real odd. As I was sitting there I felt something touch my hand a few times. It was ghostly like it was trying to get my attention. There was a tree where we parked that bothered me alot it just had a strong feeling of a presence near it.

As we sat there I heard alot of movement in the woods particularly towards the wooded side rather then the lake shore besides my stomach growling lol guess I worked up an appetite hiking around. However It was like something was being stealthy moving slowly and at one time the noises became quite loud as you could hear brush and a branch snap. They did not sound animal at all more like something was watching us that we could not see. I had Lee put the keys in the vehicle just in case because from my observation something was real close and surrounding us.

Lee mentioned to me that the frogs changed there calls and tunes when we started hearing the movement. I noticed that to so it was obvious something was pretty close to us perhaps checking us out. The one thing that started to amaze me is that there was a crying noise coming from the woods. It sounded like a long strung out faint cry. What it was I do not know but it was not an owl or any animal I heard. It was just a long whiney type of sound.

So alot of strange little things in this little area. Then I had Lee drive us away from the Lake. I wanted to try and heard better and get away from all the frogs.  Plus its quite possible to see something if your out driving the dirt roads at night.

Lee drove down a four wheeler trail it was pretty intense and had many turns and loops. We were pretty deep in the woods and it was like a jungle safari as branches were scraping the vehicle. But it was pretty fun but very thick foliage. We came out on another road and I wanted to get a photo of a sign when I heard somebody go wooooo. Apparently down a nearby trail there were two guys talking and it seemed they were stuck cause I could hear wheels spinning and them talking about pushing the vehicle.

We got out of there quite quickly because we thought it was strange that others would be up here at 4am or 5am in the morning. Afterall we know we are there to investigate but what are others doing in the middle of nowhere so we were cautious.

We started taking this one road we found and must had stayed on it for quite a few miles nothing but a hill dirt road with acres and acres of just moonlit forest. There was no end to it so it seemed. Afterawhile we started coming up on many different cross roads and even trails. Some signs said restricted areas. The fog was very thick and just sitting above some of the hill tops and peaks on the road.

But I thought this place was very weird there are no maps, trailheads, visitor centers, ranger stations in the woods there is NOTHING. But we drove and after awhile we had a vehicle pull off a dirt road and follow us. As we kept going we encountered two crosses in the middle of the woods. One of them I took a photo of the other I could not because the person behind us starting closing on us.

We started to notice other vehicles up in the woods and its possible they were hunters maybe campers. But we ran into four vehicles in just a short time. The one kept following us until we came up to a bunch of vehicles and trailers in the woods Lee quickly spun the Jeep around and we started heading back in the other direction back where we came from. The pick up truck turned around and started to follow us.

Thanks to Lee's good driving we lost them and became way ahead to a point where we could no longer see them. We basically headed out of there to the main route and passed eventually a huge group of hunters. So its possible that right now that explains all the activity up there. But still we were in the middle of nowhere and there are lots of troublemakers it seems out here.

On our way out of the forest we passed on dirt road a giant bobcat cage. I locked myself on in there had Lee take my photo. There was still some fog in various areas around here. We finished off the investigation and the sun was rising it was quite intense. We then headed home and hopefully we will return because I think there is a lot more to see around Half Moon Lake and maybe sometime we will go out there during the day to look for some bigfoot tracks and find some other strange things.

So all in all last night was a nice series of investigations to begin the new year. We had a lot of activity at each place never a dull moment and took alot of photos as well as Lee recorded sounds at all of the locations. There is a lot of history and woods to the Ocala National Forest so we hope to return eventually to many of these places again with many new ones. Have a happy new year and cheers to the start of a grand year and strange experiences as we adventure into the unknown!
Peace
Rick
