The site of Fort Butler exist at the Williams Landing area of Astor. All that remains of the fort is a historical plaque with a dreary patch of woods behind it. The fort was built in 1838 during the Seminole War on the West Bank of the Saint Johns River. It was a crude log stockade and garrison. It served to guard the St. Johns river and was used as a source of communication with other Garrisons in the central Florida area. Across from Fort Butler Stood Fort Call which was part of the frontier settlement of Volusia. Today the county of Volusia I believe was named after the settlement for which we are currently based in. Nothing remains today but the area itself is quite old. Astor is an old fishing town which has a bridge that a caretaker was killed on that bridge since then has been moved to the Pioneer Arts Settlement. But I have heard of others dying near the bridge or on it. There is an old inn and tiny harbor also near where the fort once stood. Its a pretty dismal area at night just to walk around the woods, lonely streets and along the river. We have done so many Seminole War areas and everyone we ever done feels the same way. The fort site pretty much completes are investigations in Astor. © By Lord Rick
