Someone Tried Passing Off This Illegally Owned Rabbit As A Guinea Pig

Police in Australia weren't fooled when the owners of this enormous illegally kept rabbit tried passing it off as a guinea pig.

The pet's keepers made the ridiculous claim after cops in Springwood, Queensland, found the animal cooped up inside a cage in a trailer home.

Bunnies are banned in the state due to the threat they pose to fauna and flora, and keeping them without authorization can lead to 6 months in jail and a fine of about $32,000 U.S.

Given the possible consequences, it's no wonder the rabbit's owners tried convincing officers that their fluffy friend was an entirely different animal.

But the investigators, who were called to the home on an unrelated matter, weren't duped and seized the pet. It's now being transferred to a sanctuary in Grafton, New South Wales.

On Monday, Queensland Police Service posted pictures of the bunny online that are going viral.

"Not wanting to upset the Easter Bunny and lose out on his yearly chocolate binge, Senior Constable Ben Sier made sure after he finished cuddling his fat furry friend that he found a good home for it," the service wrote on its website.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman told ABC News Australia that the owners could now face possible charges for keeping a declared pest.
