The 300-Foot Deep Chasm In This Backyard Will Give You Nightmares

A drone has captured the truly terrifying scale of a 300-foot deep mineshaft that recently opened up in a property's backyard in southwest England.

Video posted online shows the seemingly that devoured land just yards from the home in Scorrier, near Redruth in Cornwall.

The patio and half the garage were swallowed up by the chasm, believed to be a remnant of an 18th century tin mine.

From the ground, it may seem like it's a regular 10 to 12 foot-deep sinkhole. But it's when the gap is seen from the sky, and something is thrown inside, that its staggering and rather frightening depth is revealed:

"This shaft is truly massive and is approximately 300 foot to water and God knows how deep from there," Mark Thomas, who shot the footage, told the Plymouth Herald.

The shaft was discovered when surveyors were checking the site for the sale of the house, the BBC reports. Luckily, the property is currently unoccupied.

Stuart Dann, who runs local mine survey firm Mining Eye, said the area had a rich history of mine workings and that in some places the ground was essentially "like a massive bit of Swiss cheese."

Structural engineers are now deciding on the future of the home, according to the BBC.
