81-Year-Old Chases Down Robbers Who Dared Steal Her Purse

Two purse-snatchers got more than they bargained for when they targeted an older woman to rob earlier this week.

 

Alice Makla, 81, of Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania, was sitting in her parked car in her driveway when she was approached by a man and a woman. As Makla was speaking to them through her open window, they reached in to grab her purse and ran away with it.

 

It turns out, the suspects apparently had spotted Makla at a local drugstore with a lot of cash on hand. But Makla wasn't going to let them get away with it.

 

In an act of courage, Makla took matters into her own hands and chased the robbers down, slamming their getaway car in the process. And it seems she caused enough damage to get them caught.

 

"She rammed their car, left some marks on it, and police had at least something to go on," Makla's neighbor, Steve Jabara, told WNEP. 

 

Later that day, officers spotted the damaged car in a local store parking lot and arrested the suspects, 34-year-old William Hayhurst, and 31-year-old Erin Vanmatre. They admitted to taking $140 from Makla's wallet and throwing her purse out of their car window. 

 

Their hearing date is set for February 25th. 

 

As for Makla, it seems she's put an ageist myth to rest. Seniors most definitely are not helpless.

 

In 2014, a 70-year-old convenience store employee also fought off an armed robber by throwing cases of beer. And in 2013, we wrote about a 92-year-old grandmother who kicked a home intruder in the face, teaching him you definitely don't mess with Texas.
