This year marks the 60th anniversary of Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring," a seminal book that laid out in plain prose the catastrophic harms we were introducing to nature, and to ourselves, by regularly using chemical pesticides such as DDT. Its publication ignited and inspired an environmental movement. People were understandably outraged by what Carson, a trained biologist, had revealed, and the outcry led to national legislation and helped form the Environmental Protection Agency.
