A portion of the year this pass is closed due to heavy snowfall. The pass would take us to the ghost town of Monitor also known as Loope. It would also serve as a gateway up into the higher sierras where remnants of very rich mines once existed. Journey with us through Mono pass as we hike along the old Monitor Creek right through the town site.
We have reached the town site only a few foundations and mine debris piles remain. The foundations you are seeing are said to be all that remains of the hotel that once stood within the pass. Just above the foundations are a series of mines which were all part of the Monitor Mining District surrounding Colorado Hill.

The Zaca Mining operation ran well into the 1960s as it overshadows the town site below of Monitor. One of the largest pieces of pyrite was found here in addition to the millions in Bullion that was mined from the volcanic rock found along the steep canyon walls. All that really remains of the mine is its overgrown dirt roads, desk, chair, tractor trailer bed and some debris piles with wood tailing protruding from them.
Colorado Hill was part of the Monitor Mining District or as some called it the lower ward. In actuality it really is a mountain and a large one filled with many switch back mining roads. Mine number two in the hillside produced more bullion nearly then any other mine in the county besides the Morningstar. We would have to continue to walk some of its mining roads in search of a miners cabin to break at.

This is an old miners cabin which not only reveals great scenic views but also of Mogul Peak and its district adjacent from it. The cabin is collapsed but there is still some access inside of it. Just on the hill below it is an old rusty bed spring and bean cans. Even though the forest is consuming the land their are still signs that humans lived around here at one given time over a century ago.
This was the largest mine in the Mogul Mining District known as the upper ward of Monitor. Even though the mine shaft is collapsed their are still remnants left behind of the office, miners shack and wood pylons protruding from the shafts entrance. The mine is fairly close to the top of Mogul Peak and below is a canyon that holds a creek where we checked for Bigfoot impressions at. I was not sure this was the right place until I did further research about this secluded location.

We are hiking along Mogul Canyon where if you look towards the end of the video you can see Mogul Peak to the right of this road where I am filming at. This is an old miners road they are very overgrown and today its very very primitive. Places like these are a very rare sight to see but we would eventually decide to cut to our right and head down to the bottom of the canyon.
As we followed Mogul Canyon we climbed up to this Plateau to break at. Maybe I am just babbling our of a very tedious hike but we do want you to connect with us. Just behind me you can see Mogul Peak off in the distance at nearly 8k and belong the hillside is the Carson River which we would eventually follow back to Mono Pass. All we really did is went in a big circle starting off at the pass entering the primitive area and coming out overlooking the highway through the sierras below.
