Central Terminal Station opened in 1929 just a few months before the great depression. Having over 200 trains going through it daily this became the second busiest train station in the country. The tower 15-17 very tall stories could be seen in buffalo from miles away and was one of the highest points till construction of buffalo grew. The building is completely made of brick and marble, contains a bomb shelter and was said that if buffalo had a nuclear attack this would be the safest place. Central Terminal closed in the late 70s but reopened after it was bought for 100000 it was not used for the boarding of trains but rather other things like around Christmas time they would have festive events, a large decorated tree things of that sort. I remember when i was a child my father took me to the observation deck i will never forget that. I remember also in the 80s a week before Christmas playing inside sliding on its shiny marble floors, admiring the wood and brass railings. Over the last 20 years much of the train station has been stripped of its values, vandalized, spray painted, bodies dumped there, a man died because the concourse fell on him and many other things. The weather, flooding of the basements have also took its toll. This gothic monolithic structure served more then just a train station it served jobs for the many as well as other business. I would say besides the tower there are 4 other buildings on site 2 of them which are as long as a block, one seems to be maintenance garage, other mail building and a few more have other purposes. A great site to learn about the history of this place would be to go here http://terminal.buffalonet.org/history.html If you want to learn a little history on the railroad and how this grandeur place started more history. What makes it now eerie today is that it sits alone with no lights on just train horns sound off into the night and the clocks that are dimly lit that turn a few hours a night are this stations only life. Ghost of the past still haunt this place especially on its platform where at one time 10000s read there newspapers and boarded there next train. There have been talks of making this place into a train museum, casino, or restoring the main tower, or possibly demolishing all of it which would be very costly in the millions to hall it all away. In my opinion I would like to see it restored so i could share its history with my children as I once shared it with my father.
Update: Every window on the main tower has been replaced and the concourse or lobby area has been cleaned up nicely. On investigation 4 of this place we got our first apparition photos. This just proves the fact that there is definitely a variety of ghost here. Some may have been people who were murdered here others may be ones who still are waiting for the next train. One thing is for sure this place is amazing. Check out investigation 4 we entered some new areas that are worth looking into. |
