The Yellow Pine Mill and Railroad today sits on a hill at the edge of Goodsprings which was incorporated in 1901. By 1902 the Nevada Southern Railway talked about designing a railroad that would run right through Goodsprings. It never happened however by 1905 the Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad did complete a series of trails that went from Yellow Pine to Jean.

When new processing methods came along in 1906 the mills production increased. If you were to hike on the hill today you would find many small mines. You would see signs that the railroad once existed and foundations of the mill. In 1909 the founder of the Yellow Pine Mining Company J. F. Kent was trying to purchase a very well unused narrow gauge railroad at Searchlight that ran to the Colorado River. Just northeast of Searchlight you have El Dorado Canyon and southeast of Searchlight Spirit Mountain.

The railroad deal came into effect in 1910 and by 1911 it was fully complete. The towns in the wild west depended on railroading. Once the trains stopped coming these towns died. Their were many problems assembling this railroad. But by 1915 to 1918 production was increased therefore the population grew. Now today a town of a 1000 people has been merely reduced to 100 residents.

While the tracks were removed in 1930 and sold in 1934 the mill now sits in ruins along with its mines. Prior to 1930 the narrow gauge ran from Goodsprings to Jean NV....as well as out to the Goodsprings Mining District. The mill and mine were not developed till 1901. Today the mine has been barred off as a bat habitat or filled in but was one of the largest mines in the Goodsprings area. When hiking I did find the entrance that was filled in their is nothing but piles of rock and wood remaining.

What made mining a big operation is war and during war we needed minerals however after WWI lead and zinc were no longer needed thus decreasing production shutting down mines. One of those mine would be the Yellow Pine which caused the town to drastically decline in numbers.

When WWII came around the town went through another boom however most mines sat silent and abandoned. The Yellow Pine Mine District earned over 30 million in lead, gold zinc and copper. It provided a third of Clark Counties metal production which involved the building of the city of Las Vegas.

The mill burned down to the ground in 1924 believe it or not they rebuilt it only to have it burned down in 1928. At one time this mills tracks also reached 5 miles away the Goodsprings Mining district. When the tracks were dismantled so were the mines in that area as well.
