The Paranormal & Ghost Society

The old historic school in Wadsworth Nevada is a reminder of what once was. Wadsworth at one time went from being a booming railroad town to nearly a ghost town. Very few remnants remain today as at one time in 1884 a fire destroyed most of the town as high winds caused the flames to travel from one structure to the next. In that fire many of the railroading buildings were consumed to ash. In 1902 a second fire broke out and this caused allot of the businesses including the railroad to relocate to the Sparks area. From that point and on the town would began to die out according to statistics this is one of the poorest communities in all of Nevada.

The school was built in 1898 and is the largest remnant remaining from the towns heyday. It is a two story building that has been boarded up for many years. The school had a small cellar where coal would be shoveled down a chute then put into a furnace that would heat the classrooms. There was no office or nurses quarters and all the grades attended this school particularly native Americans from the Pyramid Lake area.

The school was built out of brick then covered in a beige stucco near the Truckee River which runs through the town of Wadsworth. The entrance had three open arches and the building was an H shape. The school at one time had a balcony and to the left was a fire escape which is no longer standing. The flag poles on the grounds are bare no flags waving in the wind just a rusty remnant of the past. The type of architecture was a Renaissance Villas type of look which displayed the towns efforts to show the importance of education.

The upstairs and the downstairs were not connected you physically had to go outside even in the winter months if you were to visit any of the upstairs classrooms. The interior of the school was made of wood that was painted a spring green. The only storage closet was downstairs where kids could put there jackets and shoes. But more then likely they used the storage as a means to store school supplies.

During recess lunch was served outdoors their was no gym nor cafeteria everything was nearly done outside except for during the cold winter months. When school was not in session the Masons used this location as a meeting hall for there members. The structure also had an attic which could be accessed via ladder from an upstairs classroom where it would take you up to a bell tower that was rung when school began and when the day had ended.

Whether the school is haunted or not it truly is hard to say at night it looks like one of the most intimidated buildings your ever going to confront. However inside it is what it is just an old school house. Unfortunately the building is in deplorable condition overran by rodents and pigeons. Their is also allot of graffiti on the chalk boards, stacks of furniture, holes in the walls, lights hanging by a thread and inches of pigeon droppings upstairs. One of the rooms you can see animal prints in as if someone brought their dog inside to walk around its quite the site.

At one time the town had about 700 residents most of them had children and those children attended this school. The towns purpose was to serve those traveling up into the high sierras with a place to rest. The other reason for the towns existence was for the railroading. It was a freight center for the Central Pacific Railroad as past this point there was no more water or fuel for the engines. Past this point you had the harsh 42 mile desert and just north of it the Black Rock. The trains could stock up on supplies in Wadsworth then be on their merry way. Sadly the roundhouse and shops were all destroyed in the fire and even though some of it was rebuilt after these events Wadsworth would never be the same. Although their are a few other historic structure near this school it is the school that symbolized what this town once was.

Although you can tell renovations were attempted it is going to take allot more to save this building then just a few photos. As a matter in fact it is the entire town that is going to need saving. When I found this historic school house on birthday I was just glad to walk around the grounds and try to imagine what life was like here a century ago.

We hope that this special feature on our site can put that into perspective for our viewers we are the first group period to have gone on inside to show the world this taste of history that so many have denied. I have read stories from others about how they were to scared to venture inside or how they were afraid to get into trouble. So with that in mind going into abandoned buildings is illegal do not try this at home for educational purposes only.
