     Tuzigoot is an apache word which means "Crooked Water" although it was a Sinagua site built around 1100 to about 1440 A.D. They called it this due to the fact that Peck's lake was a cutoff extended off of the Verde River where it meandered near the present day ruins you see in the photos below. Today they are some of the best per served Sinagua pueblo ruins in Verde Valley Arizon. The ruins were built up on a limestone and sandstone ridge which reside about 120 feet above the Verde Rivers floodplain. Below is a photo showing the Tuzigoot pond which creeps right up onto the ruins but today has appeared to have receded. The site surrounding these ruins is about 58 acres but with views of here almost seem eternal with views to one of Arizona's largest marshes, Sycamore Canyon, Jerome and black hills from the old copper mines that were built here during Jerome's growth. At one time these pueblos were three stories in height but today the second story has been completely decimated and crumbling over time. Just as each room no longer has ceilings as everything is open to the skies. However there is one room that you can enter that is enclosed on the second story which also seemed to be significant just as the summit of Tuzigoot up above it which also is the observation deck. At one time the land was owned by United Verde also known as Phelps Dodge which sold the site to the county for a buck then after this excavations would began which revealed many Sinagua artifacts related to these ruins. The excavations were done from 1933 to about 1935 by Louis Caywood and Edward Spicer of the University of Az. By 1936 they were made available to the public where a pueblo revival museum was built and visitors center. The Sinaguas cultivated cotton which was brought north through Mexico where they used it to make beautiful cloths which could be traded. With the river nearby and vast amount of wilderness they could hunt and also live off the land. The giant pueblo had around 110 rooms and as much as up to 250 people living on this site. The Sinagua were farmers of an ancient past but they also were traders. Their trade would span for hundreds of miles which was necessary in order to sustain life at this cultural site. The Sinagua were an advanced society they lived off the desert land and utilized it to the maximum. The area is home to server unusual bird like species and also included the great horned owl which I did end up seeing one on this trip not to far from this location. As far as the paranormal goes I am almost sure there is energy present here. The Sinagua lived here for hundreds of years and one day they mysterious vanished from this location without reason with perhaps some mystery as to why. Today anyone can visit these ruins its an important part of south western history and my mind wandered as when I first approached this location I thought man this looks like something you would see in South America not the South Western United States. As you can see in our photos the valley floor below the ruins are dry there is no water anymore. Which leads me to believe that at times drought may have been a factor in the disappearance of the Sinagua people. Once the rivers or lakes dried up the tribes may have fled to other locations that had more abundant water.
