In June of 1848 it was the Mormon Battalion who made attempts at crossing the Sierras when they migrated to Salt Lake Valley region of Utah. It was not uncommon to send a few scouts ahead of the Battalion to scope out the area for any dangers or how rugged the terrain was be as they would often be carrying allot of supplies from the west coast.

Henderson Cox, Daniel Browett and an Ezra Allen were found deceased buried in a mound here by the Battalion a few days after the incident on June 27th in 1848. They had exhumed their friends bodies from the mound later reburying them with a cairn to protect the grave. Above the cairn they carved their names onto a tree to serve as a memorial for the loss of their lives. Strangely Ezra's gold pouch was found still on him thus it was brought to his widow in Iowa so we know the men definitely were not robbed which adds more to the mystery! Although the natives didn't have much use for gold minerals over the last few centuries were used for jewelry making such as turquoise for example!

I have heard allot of mixed stories about the murder of these men one story goes that they bodies were mutilated another one says the men's bodies were found burnt. Nobody ever found out who murdered the men it was assumed that local Indians had did it due to the fact atop of the mound arrowheads were found. However I found it odd that the Indians would go through all this trouble to murder these men then bury them and lay arrow heads on top of it. Generally when arrow heads are found on top of a mound it is a sign of respect thus I have reason to believe that it was not the Indians who murdered these men.

Which leaves me with the theory that these men may have been victims of some savage animal attacks in the area or possibly a Bigfoot attack. Back in the 1800's Bigfoot roamed the Kit Carson Pass freely their was no roads and certainly the white man did not start passing through the sierras until the gold rush came to be. Just as with any primate they can be very territorial and if provoked deadly. I know these are bold theories I am making but the springs flourished with life surrounded by mountains, alpine forest, creeks and alas the springs which still can be seen today. This would make it an ideal location for an entire tribe of Sasquatches to exist only today they are now pushed back deeper into the sierras where we do allot of our cryptozoological investigations.

I believe that the men were mutilated then found by the local Indians who buried them and maybe put arrowheads on the grave to honor the befallen since they may have fought like warriors. I spend allot of my time studying Native American History and I have found that the tribes throughout NV and CA were rather very peaceful. They were very eager to trade with the white man and you didn't have the hostility that you did as with the Midwestern states.

The area receives a heavy amount of snowfall so its rather hard to traverse in the winter months as you can see from our first investigation. Due to the fact that it borders the Emigrant and California Trail two major pioneer routes that traverse hundreds of miles it is a great area to search for the unknown. But it also back in the 1800's was a very important encampment due to its springs and what the area offered to the pioneer.

Later after the deaths of the men Tragedy Springs became a settlement and it was named after the incident that took place in 1848. The settlement was listed on the maps till about 1956 and it lies at about an elevation of nearly 8000'. When 1967 rolled around that is when the memorials, plaques and area began to be used as a park. Today what is left of the settlement is an old homestead and barn. People come all over the state to cross country ski, sled and hike on the Californian trail which runs in close proximity to where the men were murdered.
