When I learned about three lakes dark history I decided to pack it up and head for southern Utah. Over the years you hear about stories relating to artifacts with great power. The greatest power or treasure of all just might be Montezumas gold.  So many individuals have critized our paranormal group because we are not main stream. I am not just a ghosthunter or a bigfoot chaser I am an adventurer whether it would be lost gold or climbing the highest mountains. The skies the limit and although I did not find no gold it was an honor to visit one of the most ancient locations in all of Utah.

At one time this location was a park but I have heard rumors that their have been drownings as the lakes although small are very deep. Many years ago treasure hunters from all over the world came to these lakes in search of the gold. It is a fact their is an underwater cave whether it leads to a treasure room or not those that ventured in deep enough stated odd symbols were found underwater. While others have proclaimed angry Aztec spirits trying to drown them as if hands were reaching from the bottom of the lake pulling divers to their deaths.

The Ambersnail is listed as an endangered species found in these lakes killing just one means thousands of dollars in fines. This is the reason why treasure hunting was banned from here. If you ask me I think its bullshit the treasure needs to be in a museum and it could be done without harming a single snail. I did visit the area or at least toured it as I wanted to at least share this story with our viewers and give them an inside look. At one time in 2010 I almost planned to scuba dive into the underwater cave something so very few have done. Although preservation is the key so is unmasking the truth once and for all on this fabled location.

Rumor has it that three lakes is cursed generally most individuals who were close to finding this lakes secret almost met grave deaths. I know it is very easy to remain skeptical of curses and such things. However I have read numerous reports about folks hiking in the area after dark seeing evil spirits. I have read reports about people being chased or hearing whispering voices surrounding the lakes when the sun goes down. Are these reports true? Honestly if excavating could be done their may just be Montezumas army of the dead buried along the lake shores which might account for this strange activity.

In 1520 the Spanish pushed forward pillaging and demolishing the Aztecs which caused fear of this ancient culture to flee up north into America.  If perhaps 8000 Aztecs hiked north their would be a way to transport the gold if each one carried a bar. Although this seems like folklore it is a fact that the Aztec children were taught at an early age to run with gold and carry it without struggle. This treasure hunt would take me to two parts one at Three Lakes and another place up in Johnson Canyon to a place called white rock. Both places were only seperated by miles both places were rumored to be treasure sites.

Sadly those that dared to look for the gold met ill fates such as the last owner of the property Brandt Childs who met his fate.  Further below is his obituary
:

Obituary: Brandt Child

Published: Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002 8:54 a.m. MDT

KANAB/BOUNTIFUL, UTAH - Our beloved Brandt Child passed form this life on Sept. 12, 2002 as a result of a car/horse accident on Highway 89 near Marysvale, Utah, after returning from an LDS Mission to Michigan.

Born Jan. 18, 1928 to Harry and Hazel Marie Adams Child. Raised and lived in the Bountiful area until moving to Kanab, Utah 19 years ago.

Brandt is survived by his wife of 17 years Venice Maxwell Child, 11 children, three sisters, 58 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and three foster children. He was preceded in death by his first wife Lue Anna Eckman Child, son Brandt Ernest Child, three brothers Bruce, Eugene, and Wallace Child, and his parents.

Closed casket visitation will be held Wed., Sept. 18, 2002 from 7:30-9:30 PM at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main, Bountiful. Services will be held Thurs., Sept. 19, at 11:00 AM at the West Bountiful Stake Center, 1930 North 600 West, with visitation an hour before services. Additional services were held earlier in Kanab, Utah. Interment will be in the Bountiful City Cemetery under the direction of Mosdell Mortuary of Kanab, Utah.

I decided to share this information to show the series of strange accidents that are associated with this location. For someone who believes in the curse the curse may be someones last reality. You have to understand that Child purchased the land for its beauty but he also like most had hoped to uncover its secrets. Divers who have looked for the treasure have been choked or lost their way in the channel which goes right up under a cliff deep at the bottom of the lake.  Another death occurred when an explorer tried to drill a hole from above the treasure room and met his fate with a massive heart attack..

How can we be sure their is something at the end of the tunnel? Well from what I read sonar equipment did verfify that at the end of the tunnel was an 80 foot cavern or room. What is in the room could be gold or it might just be an empty cave.  I would be eager to find out or lead an excavation as well as an exploration into this location.  Despite the land is offlimits due to some hazards and preservation of the snails if any party can attain the proper permits I would be willing to lead an more in depth legal excavation of the property.  The reason why I am stating this is that  The Paranormal & Ghost Society specializes in curses and more dimeaning spirits.  Some readers might think that  we are out to get rich and that is where I stop you. Their is enough evidence around three lakes to support the fact that this may not be no myth and that any findings need to be in a museum.  I truly do think that previous explorations by other groups were not a success or didnt wield anything due to the methods used. Not to mention that mans owns fears will always keep him from the truth. My organization stands by the truth and we hope by publicizing it two things will come out of this. 1. Preservation and 2. Truth with those two things  I can rest well knowing my visit here was not in vain.

Further below are some articles on the three lakes and the lost treasure. Both articles talk about two seperate locations which I took it upon myself to visit them each. I did not write them but they are fairly accurate and interesting reads.  The stories of Aztec gold date back a century ago just as tales of the paranormal surrounding these lakes. Today all that remains is an old dock, loose metal stairwell, totem, and an unfinished tunnel that was never completed supposedly leading to the treasure room. Since the early 1990s Brandts fabled park has closed perhaps due to his dearth or perhaps due to a bunch of endangered snails.

Did I find anything strange here? No but I did notice their is allot of energy eminating from the area its almost humming. Most ghosthunters understand what I am talking about. The property today is off limits however with a television networks backing our group might be able to unravel this areas mysteries I truly believe this hence my visit.  I stood their on the dock imagining tales of treasure and sacrifce wondering to myself what secrets this location contains. Then after my moment of silence I decided it was time to move on to another  location where legends are told.

As far as Montezuma he is going to have to wait maybe many more years till his true fate is pieced together and legends of gold come to full circle. Although many treasure hunters will gather and television networks bare in mind that unlike most lost treasures found this one will come with a price. The Aztecs would never just hand over the gold they were a very advanced culture who built traps and on their dead body they vowed to protect Montezumas Treasure! The area again is private property and is well maintained as well as government watched any further expeditions would need to be done through the right parties.

Montezuma’s Revenge

Russell W. Estlack

In the summer of 1914, Freddy Crystal, an excited young man on a bicycle, rode into a small town in Southern Utah. He was waving an old newspaper clipping of Mexican petroglyphs and a map he found in an old book.

It wasn’t long before a crowd gathered around him. He explained that an old medicine man down in Mexico interpreted the symbols for him and directed him to caves in Johnson Canyon.

“In those caves,” the old man said, “you will find Montezuma’s treasure.”

Freddy obtained a grubstake and headed for the canyon. He dug holes and sank exploratory shafts. After eight years of backbreaking work, he uncovered an old tunnel that was sealed with crude bricks and mortar.

When the news of the discovery reached Kanab, the residents of the town went wild.

For the next several weeks, the townspeople worked at clearing the entrance. They broke through and entered a big room that contained bones, a few artifacts and another tunnel.

At the end of the second tunnel they found a room with a sacrificial alter, a handful of pre-Columbian artifacts and a large human skeleton propped up in a sitting position against a wall.

They searched the caves for more than a year, but came up empty-handed.

Freddy left the area and headed to Mexico. Two years later, he returned to Kanab with more detailed maps and information. Treasure fever gripped the town again and a large base camp was established in Johnson Canyon.

After two years of frantic searching there was still no gold.

Freddy spent long hours poring over the maps and one morning he announced he’d made a mistake. They were looking in the wrong place. The treasure was hidden in Angel Canyon, not Johnson Canyon.

With their dreams shattered, the good people of Kanab packed their gear and trudged back to town.

Every now and then, someone would go back to Johnson Canyon to search for the treasure, but as far as most folks in Kane County were concerned, the issue of Montezuma’s gold was as dead as Montezuma himself.

Most of the townspeople gave up the quest for gold, but there were those who believed there might be some truth to Freddy’s story.

Haunted waters

In the spring of 1989, Brandt Child, a long-time resident of Kanab, developed a theory that the skeleton, the altar, the artifacts and the petroglyphs in Johnson Canyon were designed to draw attention away from the real hiding place.

Six miles north of Kanab, in Three Lakes Canyon, Child discovered an Aztec treasure symbol carved in the cliffs above the lake. It was a circle with an arrow pointing down and indicating a water trap.

Despite the rumors that had circulated throughout Southern Utah for many years that the largest of the three lakes was haunted, Child purchased the property.

Tony Thurber, a long-time friend of Child, made an exploratory dive. He discovered a long, narrow opening into a tunnel. Thirty feet into the tunnel, he became disoriented in the heavy turbulence caused by strong currents. After many harrowing moments, he managed to find his way back to the surface.

Thurber agreed to make another dive, but this time he tied a rope around his leg. He became concerned when the line went limp and within minutes he surfaced again.

Child insisted the rope was taut the entire time Thurber was in the water. Thurber refused to dive again.

A team of professional divers made their first dive on June 22, 1989. Their sonar detectors indicated a tunnel 100 feet long, ending in an 80-foot chamber. The sonar also registered a heavy concentration of metal at the end of the tunnel.

Since it was late in the afternoon, an exploratory dive was scheduled for the next morning. That night, one of the divers, Russ, had a strange dream in which he swam alone into the tunnel. He was greeted by an Aztec warrior who hurled a spear at him as he surfaced.

Russ made the first dive of the day in the early morning light. He was 60 feet into the tunnel when he started screaming into his intercom, “Get me out! Get me out! There’s eerie figures all around me. I’m bein’ choked. I can’t breathe, get me out!”

Child and the other divers pulled Russ from the water. He was pale and shaking all over. It took him several hours to calm down.

The divers tried again two weeks later with identical results. Each time a diver went into the lake, they experienced the same choking sensation and saw the ghostly figures. When they came out of the water, they said they would never dive in that lake again.

Child decided to drain the lake but again was thwarted by outside forces. It turned out the lake is the last remaining habitat of the Kanab Golden Ambersnail.

Under the terms of the Endangered Species Act, it’s against the law to molest the mollusk or alter its habitat in any way. Killing one of the endangered snails carries a fine of up to $50,000. To insure compliance with the law, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service posted a warning sign and fenced off the lake.

In December 1991, a gaggle of geese were turned loose on the lake. Agents of the Federal Government accused the geese of eating the snails. They captured the suspects and forced them to cough up the evidence.

The perpetrators of the crime were never caught, and the geese were donated to a local animal sanctuary.

The curse

Residents of Kanab insist the lake is haunted, and they believe the Aztecs placed a curse on it. In 2001, Child was killed near Panguitch when the car he was riding in struck and killed a horse.

The horse seemed to appear out of nowhere and, to this day, no one can explain where the horse came from. His death may have been an accident, or perhaps it was the curse that killed him.

There have been many strange occurrences in Three Lakes Canyon. Witnesses have reported seeing ghostly figures wandering around the lake. Robert Child, the nephew of Brandt Child, reported that about three years ago, a young man climbed to the top of the cliff overlooking the lake. He drilled a large hole down into the treasure chamber and as night approached he went back to his motel room to sleep.

That night the young man suffered a massive heart attack and died. Was it the excitement of finding Montezuma’s gold or was it the curse of the Aztec warriors that ended his life?

Six miles north of Kanab, on Highway 89, in a small lake, the restless spirits of Aztec warriors and 100,000 endangered snails wait for the next brave soul to learn its secrets.

Montezuma's Treasure

There's still gold in these hills!

  • Mysterious events surround Kanab residents attempting to find Montezuma's treasure, which they say is buried somewhere near Kanab.
Caves still remain from the days when the town of Kanab was in the head of Johnson Canyon digging for Montezuma's treasure.
The search for Montezuma's treasure continues in the Kanab area. Legend has it that when the Aztec king, Montezuma was killed by his own people in Mexico in the 1500's, and the spanish Conquistadors were driven from Tenotchitlan, the Aztecs took their treasure and hid it from the Spaniards. That was 400 years ago.

In 1914, Freddy Crystal arrived in Johnson Canyon, just north of Kanab. He had a newspaper clipping of Mexican petroglyphs he thought indicated that Montezuma's treasure was hidden nearby.

Six years later, the entire town of Kanab was living in tents at the head of Johnson Canyon digging for the hidden treasure. After two years there was still no sign of gold.

In the spring of 1989, Brandt Child came up with another theory. He decided that the real hiding place was not in Johnson's Canyon and the signs in the canyon were a ploy to divert attention from the real hiding place. Child believes the treasure is in the lower pond of the three lakes chain, six miles north of Kanab on Highway 89. He found an Aztec treasure sign, a circle with an arrow pointing down, carved in the rock 8 feet above the water level on the wall above the lakes. The site fits the criteria for an Aztec treasure hiding technique, called a "water trap."

Tony Thurber, friend of Child's, made a dive to explore the lake. Under the treasure sign he discovered a tunnell about four feet wide and seven feet tall that appeared to be handmade. When Thurber got 30 feet into the tunnel, he was disoriented and couldn't tell if he was going down or up, or in or out. He said he got caught in a heavy draft and was afraid he might get swept into an underground river.

He finally found his way out. He went down again with a tether line attached, but surfaced. He got concerned when he found the line limp rather than taut as it should have been. The person holding the line said it had been taut the whole time.

On June 22, 1989, Thurber returned with three professional divers. The divers got 70 feet back in the tunnel. Their sonar equipment showed the tunnel was 100 feet long and ended in a room 80 feet in diameter. Detectors registered heavy metal at the end of the tunnel. It was late, so they quit for the day. That night Russ, one of the divers, had a dream. In the dream he swam back to the cave, an Aztec warrior with a spear was waiting and threw the spear at Russ when he surfaced.

Russ was the first to go down the next morning. At a certain point in the tunnell, he started screaming that someone was grabbing and choking him. As he was pulled from the water he appeared white as a sheet. Another diver went down and had the same experience.

The divers left and returned in two weeks. They experienced the same choking sensation in the tunnell and had to be pulled up. The diving crew did not dive in the lake anymore.

Childs decided on a plan to drain the lake. To his surprise, the pond happens to be the only known habitat of the Kanab Amber Snail. The property was fenced off by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Then in December of 1991, 11 geese were mysteriously placed in the pond. The gaggle of geese was accused of eating the Kanab Amber Snails. The agency decided to capture the suspects and force them to vomit. After gathering the evidence, the geese were donated to an animal sanctuary. Killing one of the endangered snails is a serious offense and carries a fine of up to $50,000 per snail. No one came forward to claim the geese.

Is this the end of the search for Montezuma's treasure, or just another attempt by the spirit of the Aztec warriors to protect their treasure until the arrival of "The Chosen Ones?"
