When you think of Thompson Smelter today you kind of envision the remnants of the past as if it were an ancient temple. Some ghost town and mill explorers compare this location to American Flats which was demolished in November 2014. Honestly it is becoming more difficult to find extensive sites like these still in tact even if only a mere shell of its former glory remains. Thompson Smelter was more then just a larger mill on the hill but also it boasted a small town below it and served as the terminus of the Nevada Copper Belt Railroad. This railroad circled around the Yerington Nevada region all the way from Hudson, Ludwig, Mason, Nordyke, Wilson Canyon and Wabuska.  All locations at one time or another we have visited or explored!

Thompson Smelter was able to produce one thousand tons of copper ore a day. As of current times you can find throughout the town site copper ore everywhere although it holds no value it gives this location some character of what this town stood for and its main industry. Just as the scattered foundations, piles of bricks, broken glass and concrete jungle are all signs that at one time Thompson Smelter was booming. The town itself had nearly 400 residents including stores, homes and other businesses as well.

At times the smelter would close and reopen for business sadly this caused the towns demise as the population would decrease each time this occurred. In 1912 I believe is when the smelter wads built therefore most of the town below lived here for the primary reason of seeking employment at the mill. In 1914 the smelter closed then three years later reopened in 1917. Then two years passed and in 1919 once again the smelter was shut down till in 1926 it reopened. Then in 1928 just two years later it was again closed for good thus leaving the town site dwindling to very few residents. Today this concrete jungle still stands in desolation in the heart of Nevada. Allot of the concrete was hand mixed using the native rock and throwing in debris such as bed springs for example. I know because I had examined it because it is much different then other mills found throughout the silver state!

The Nevada Copper Belt Railroad ran from 1911 till about 1947 as a short line spur. Before it began transporting ore from various mines to mills it was used to export agricultural goods including cattle. The Yerington Chamber of Commerce had a phrase that went with the railroad "Cattle Kingdom in the Copper Hills"! The railroad traversed some of the biggest and greenest ranches in the state of Nevada while making its way through some of the richest copper mines in the region. Today you can kind of follow some of the old rail beds but the tracks have since long been gone. I remember reading a story about how some of the miners and local ranch hands would hitch a ride onto the train to venture to some of the local towns that were found along this spur that includes some of the early residents of Thompson Smelter. The railroad came right up to the smelter nearly as you can imagine this had brought growth to the area but short lived no less!

The town was erected and named after William Boyce Thompson who lived from 1869 till 1930 and was a mining tycoon also investor. He was a promoter for western support of the Revolutionary Alexander Kerensky and Bolshevik governments of Russia. Also Thompson was a philanthropist and founded Newmont Mining.  As a matter in fact he was one of the copper mine owners in the state of Nevada that actually turned copper into a huge success and fortune.  He grew up in Butte Montana where he would join his father in mining venues in the 1890's where at that time he became the mayor of Butte. Later he would move east becoming a stock broker and his first smelter he had built is now part of the Morenci Arizona open pit mine which today is the largest in the US.

When the 1900's rolled around he organized in Ely the Nevada Consolidated which eventually merged with The Kennecott Copper Company which he became a director of thus he opened up many copper mines in Mason Valley and formed the town of Thompson prior to 1910. Shortly after this time he also opened up the Magma Mine up in Superior Arizona a very wealthy copper mine where it became a part of the Anaconda Crowd thus he took 15% shares which made him extremely wealthy from this very rich copper mine. While some of the other mining venues he was involved with were lower grade. In 1915 Thompson retired creating his own holding company called the Newmont Mining Corporation which still is one of the largest copper producers in the world even a century later.

He had finances involved in numerous companies and countries from Canada all the way down to Peru including the Indian Motorcycle Company. He also financed quite a few zinc, coal and lead mines along with street railways and the Midvale Steel during the first World War. He was the director of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and promoted the Nipissing Silver deposits in Cobalt Canda for the Kennecott Company. He refinanced the American Woolen and Tobacco Products Company. He also launched the Cuba Cane Sugar Company in Cuba and owned the Pierce Arrow Motor Car Company. Thompson also organized the Submarine Boat Corp. and the Wright-Martin Aeroplane Company.  By the 1920's he also was a director of Sinclair Oil and promoter of Gulf Sulphur.

He also had a couple mansions I know of one built in 1912 in Yonkers called the W.B. Thompson Manor which today is a designated historical site added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The other home was built as his winter mansion in Superior AZ in the 1920's called the Picket Post House. This Mediterranean architecture style home still stands today and is part of the William Boyce Thompson Southwestern Arboretum State Park. The house is surrounded by the Arizona desert and beautiful gardens as even today very little has changed.  The mansions, mines and even this ghost town are all symbols of Thompson's wealth.

Sadly in 1925 Thompson became ill on a trip to South Africa as he had plans to possibly open up some mining there despite his sickness he did end up spending the last five years of his life being involved with the Republican Party. He was a presidential elector, party chair and served on the Federal Reserve Bank Of NY.  Also a delegate to the Republican National Convention and in 1921 was a nominee for a cabinet post under president Warren G. Harding. From 1919 till 1930 he was the head and principle supporter of President Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Association. From the time of his illness to his death Thompson actually ordered his own railroad car called the Alder from the Pullman Company which was very luxurious. In 1971 the train car was used by ASARCO and in 1971 the National Railways of Mexico purchased it.

Thompson was known as a family man and a hard working man who was very respectable. He also chewed tobacco and although fair to his employees he did underpay his employees. He was a businessman who invested his wealth and like most tycoons he was a success. He knew how to save and invest his money that was all the smelter was perhaps is an investment to fund some of his other projects. When this towns mining and milling stopped is right around the same time Thompson passed away. I am not sure if there is any correlation as after death the town was dwindling to just a few copper miners and residents. I am willing to theorize that once he moved onto other venues and investments that his town went on a decline.  I am not even sure if Thompson ever really lived here rather he invested and was the director that overseen the smelter which was really the meat and potatoes of this once booming copper town.

Today the town is very scattered the smelter ruins are very large just as below it are many foundations in the desert with many basements which is a very unusual site to see in the Silver State. Most ghost towns consist of wooden miner shacks some made of native stone. However Thompson's town consisted of concrete buildings including one that has a 20' deep basement while the large brick smokestack was visible from anywhere in the town when the smelter closed residents moved on. The railroad, residents and business owners depended on the success of the smelter along with the grade of copper extracted out of many of the mines found in the area. Many of the local ranchers provided crops and meat to Thompson Smelter which could be loaded on the Copper Belt then exported here along with many other boom towns in the region.

Systematically as short lived as this copper industrial town was it was successful and brought enough revenue on in to allow Thompson to invest in much larger venues which can still be seen today like his mansions or other companies. Now that American Flats has been erased from the history books I am sure this place will become a favorite of those who can appreciate this monolithic stone temple that was once part of Nevada's rich copper history. Not many mills of this size or magnitude are left from Nevada's ole mining days. The ghost town is perhaps symbolic in connection with a man of great brilliance, motivation and greatness who defined major growth in America during the early 20th century!

Thompson smelter site is Nevada’s answer to Stonehenge

News | March 25, 2020

By Richard Moreno

Massive concrete blocks are just about all that remains of the mining area known as the Thompson smelters. A century ago, more than 350 people lived here. Now, only lizards, field mice and snakes call it home.

The concrete supports, once foundations of a pair of giant smelters, are the most lasting vestiges of Thompson, located 20 miles south of Silver Springs, just west of Alternate U.S. 95.

Wandering among the giant ruins, you have to wonder what future generations will see and think. Will they be able to figure out what was once there? Will future historians speculate that these simple blocks are the remains of an ancient temple or were icons used for pagan worship — just as we view places like Stonehenge or Easter Island?

Thompson was a short-lived mining town founded in the early part of this century. In 1910, two 500-ton smelters were built on the site to process ore being produced by the copper mines developed west of Yerington.

By 1914, a small town with more than 350 people had formed in the valley below the smelters. Several blocks of wooden and concrete structures were built, including homes, shops, offices, and, of course, saloons.

Ore from area mines was shipped to Thompson on a branch line of the Nevada Copper Belt Railroad. While the treated ore was considered reasonably pure, according to mining town historian Stanley Paher, the smelters ultimately proved to be marginally profitable and were first shut down in late 1914. Operations resumed for a short time from 1917 to 1919 and again from 1926 to 1928.

In the late 1920s, the smelters were dismantled and, by then, the town had all but disappeared — becoming another Nevada ghost. Records indicate the post office operated from June 28, 1911, to June 30, 1920.

Despite its short life, Thompson, named for William B. Thompson, one of the mining company owners, is still worth a visit.

The flat desert area below the smelter site is littered with the foundations of once substantial buildings (as well as other refuse, like abandoned cars, ovens, etc.).

The mining ruins are substantial, spreading over much of the hillside, and consisting of concrete supports, walls, partial buildings and assorted brick and rock fragments.

In addition to the half dozen or so huge concrete stanchions, you can climb to the top of the hill above the ruins, via the unusual remnants of saw-toothed concrete steps that were once part of the smelter building, and stand atop a mound of broken red brick. Here once stood a towering smokestack.

Additionally, the view of the surrounding area is spectacular. The wide Mason Valley spreads out in the distance. The mounds of tailings from the Weed Heights Copper Pit are prominent to the south, while below you can see geothermal ponds, the Southern Pacific Railroad line (originally part of the Carson & Colorado Railroad) and the site of the former railroad town of Wabuska.
