and I wanted to do something special. On holidays I always try to do
memorable projects that way we can integrate our holiday into what we
do at PGS. You see were more then just a paranormal group and over the
years people have found that out. Were not going to sit
around and wait for a piece of dust to fly in front of the camera were
going to go out there seek out the strange also in the process of
having a good time.
I had a picnic planned, hike
and paranormal expedition in a place called Summit Valley. The valley
use to be filled with water from Lake Van Norden which today is many
times smaller. Therefore the water has dried up leaving behind lush
meadows and a ton of nature worth seeing on a hike. My goal was to
start the expedition at the dam then hike through various areas of the
Tahoe National Forest visiting a wagon road, old bridge, sheep camp and
homestead. Eventually we would loop around the valley and lake ending
back up at the dam so it was quite the project which would take most of
our day up.
The lake and valley are just
outside of Truckee so you get good views of Donner and Castle Peaks.
Its on the edge of a town known as Soda Springs. The town once had
hotels, stage stop and you could get supplies here along the emigrant
roads that run right through the valley. Prior to that the natives had
villages along the lakes and so you will see cupules or what is known
as grinding rocks everywhere. But you have to seek them out along the
waters edge in the forest. The natives would grind up nuts, plants,
berries and acorns. Years of that grinding create holes in the rocks
which meant the natives were here for a very long time.
Today the lake serves the
birds and so when we arrived there was dozens of pelicans. The dam is
an earthen one therefore all the compact soil and rock was built up by
hard work over time. The dam is very solid you can walk up on it some
people use it to do tricks on there bikes because it has steep sides to
it that curve up and down. It kind of reminds me of a skateboarding
trek or something. Up above the dam you can find an old rusty wheel
which use to control water flow. There are two major tributaries that
run through here one is the Yuba River the other is Castle Creek we
would see them multiple times on the hike or at least follow them short
distances.
Lots of animals here but
also over 100 birds, 115 types of butterflies and over 500 plant
species. The area was very fruitful this is why the natives lived in
this valley seasonally for hundreds of years. The valley
reminds me of a sanctuary then again millions of years ago it looked
much different. There was in fact a sea in this area, small hills, open
flat lands and even crocodiles. Today its a large valley with open
meadows, lakes and a panoramic views of the high sierras.
It was a very strange day
early on as I seen a disc like object hovering in the sky. I went to
take its photo and in a blink it was gone. I was not even sure I
managed to capture it but once I had gotten a better look at my photos
later on I realized that what I caught was an actual UFO or flying
saucer. I am not sure why it was hovering over this valley but this is
an ancient spiritual site. So many people hike, swim, fish, camp,
explore historic sites etc in this valley yet here is this object just
hovering there. So I captured it and I am proud that I keep producing
great work and the best part of it all is what we do here is simply
real hard earned research.
We started at the dam then
hiked on the west side of the valley heading south along the lake.
Eventually though we would come across a patch of woods where we found
some cupules in the rocks. This site had to be a native village
wherever you find the cupules you will also find the natives spent much
time at sites like this. Those holes within the rocks took years to
create you could think of that rock as sort of a cooking station
really. The awesome thing about Summit Valley is there is so much to
see and most of it you have to do on foot. Supposedly there is a trail
but we lost it the grass grows over it and its hard to follow so we
make our own way.
It was a chilly morning
people do not understand that even in July some mornings start off at
26 degrees sometimes even less. We had to start the hike off dressed
warm and eventually within an hour or two it really started to warm up.
Butterflies seemed to be flying around but when its cold they are just
sitting on flowers stiff. I could not believe how many wild flowers are
up here so many species and just growing in random locations. I focused
on nature more then anything on this expedition.
We had no trails we just
hiked wherever the journey took us. The forest around the lake at times
is rugged lots of rocks, brush etc. But we spent the first part of it
looking for cupules then once we left the lake behind we went out to a
meadow I drank a Canadian brew and played football a little bit with my
son. Nothing like a cold beer on a long hike with some good food I at
least felt energized to continue to explore.
We had a bit of a hard time
but we eventually found the horse trail going up into the Royal Gorge.
I read about it and really was intrigued. Unfortunately that hike may
be for another time and place since our main goal was to explore the
history a little of Summit Valley. However not far from there is Castle
Creek Bridge and a portion of an old wagon road. Actually the old
portion of the Donner Dutch Flat Wagon Road is to the east but it does
intersect with this road with the bridge that spans over Castle Creek.
Its a nice place you can take your little kids to play in the water
here or just sit on the bridge let your legs hang off the edge.
There is
also a homestead in
the woods it said etched in the wood near the door the name Wallace
never really planned on visiting this site sort of happened by accident
trying to find this other stone cabin site. He
was a sheep herder who lived in this valley in the 1800's. The
homestead was gutted no windows, door or even a fireplace. Around the
property were rusty cans everywhere and a well pump I found. There was
also some strange animal or something made out of twigs, sticks and
branches. It looked to be something very strange and I have seen this
before in the woods particularly near ancient burial grounds or village
sites. At first glance you might think it was some sort of shelter
someone made to camp and sleep in but its not. The branches are all
bent, twine is used to hold them together and it had some form. Nearby
their was also a bark house/shelter which was very primitive. The
natives that lived off Lake Van Norden built similar shelters to stay
out of the elments. What once was a homestead now appear be used as
something else I suspect.
Tammy said this homestead
and site we visited creeped her out in a sense I felt something was off here as well. Also you could hear trains nearby
as a matter in fact we heard a few trains throughout the day because
the tracks of the transcontinental railroad do come through the area
and along the valley. One strange thing is that my EMF readings up here
were going off the charge for a few minutes. At first I thought maybe
my new camera was causing it to spike but then I shut it off and it
kept going. The readings were stronger inside the homestead and weak
outside of it. I even walked around the woods and they just stopped but
then you step inside pow high readings. Maybe the ghost of Wallace
watching over his herd? Who knows!
The site was a bit strange
the wood stove looked to be in pieces or mangled. There was rusty cans
hanging on a rusty metal pole. Nearby we found a bark shelter which is
generally only made by hardcore bushwhackers or survivalist. There was
also a rusty drum barrel or a couple on site. We spent about an hour
here took some EVP, EMF readings and we had a few snacks before we had
to hike on. I found a ripped boot here I hate seeing that kind of
thing. I mean who is going to leave a hiking boot behind and what
happened to the person? Sometimes I find weird things in the woods like
bras, panties etc hanging on tree limbs ripped but not this time it was
just a mans hiking boot laying on its side.
When I was hiking back in
the meadow I did hear some screams as a matter in fact I thought I
heard someone screaming help over and over. I could never find where it
was coming from or who was doing it. A few times I shouted back and got
no reply like I said very strange place. I heard screams too have no
idea where they were coming from. The valley is surrounded by massive
peaks, canyons and a dense Tahoe National Forest. There is patches of
forest all around the valley at one time the lake use to come to the
edge of the forest. Now its all meadows and woods but the lake is
slowly fading away.
The lake at one time was an
issue because this valley flooded and they could not build a typical
dam. They were worried if it broke that the lake would flood other
towns below it and destroy everything in its path. The river flowed
right into it which we seen along our hike more so once we decided to
hike through the meadow itself and onto a dirt road. If you take the
dirt road east then head north you will come upon a site known as the
sheep pens. This once was a farm it had barns, house and outbuildings.
At one time it was one of the largest sheep camps in the state hell
even the country. Today there are just remnants of corrals, wood post
and fencing. Its very scattered nothing stands but the sheep pens.
Nearby is the old Dutch Flat
and Donner wagon road which follows another dirt road you just have to
go through some brush to find it then you can follow it north right
along the river and eventually to today's lake which takes up only a
small portion of this valley and is rather shallow. While we followed
the road we also a few times crossed the river got our feet wet a
little. We seen the strangest bug also sitting on the river bank. It
had an orange body with big black wings pretty cool. I also seen some
crawfish in the water also.
This is a very pretty valley
trees growing here and there, beautiful scenic peaks some of which
still had a little bit of snow on, green meadows, patches of wild
flowers, butterflies everywhere, hundreds of birds etc. In a sense
summit valley for us was a land of paradise does not matter how you cut
it its a place that deserves to be on our website. I put places like
these on our site so folks can appreciate and learn about them. Like I
said were more then just a paranormal group!
As we headed north we
followed the old original wagon road or a portion of it till we reached
the dam once again. We had went around the entire valley and I am sure
there is more to see afterall their are so many patches of dense forest
who knows what else is out there. We also found a couple wood shelters
on opposite sides of the valley not sure what they are for. Maybe to
get out of the elements when your cross country skiing.
There are signs throughout
the valley that show you old pictures and give you some good history.
For example near the remnants of the old original wagon road you can
follow it after reading about it. It is a bit overgrown and the history
taught me that there were many buildings standing along this portion of
the wagon road. Problem is fires burnt down the hotels and the weight
of the snow collapsed the roofs of many of the barns or homes. So today
very little stands but I understand I mean some winters this valley can
have 20' snow drifts. It looked much different in the mid 1800's when
the railroad came through here, ranches had livestock grazing and
hotels offered guest along the emigrant road .
I did revisit the dam found
a massive track and this dam is hard to make tracks in. I could not do
it and at the time I weighed 245lbs. Yet I found a track around 14
inches in length and slightly over 6 inches in width and nearly three quarters of an inch deep
into this earthen dam. I found it odd not saying its bigfoot but not
saying its human either. Anything could have made it but whatever made
it was a few hundred lbs and big. So a very big human or possibly in
theory a bigfoot like creature crossing into the valley perhaps even
trying to get down to the shoreline to drink some water.
While the
dam seems quite
small most of it is actually level or under the valley floor. You see
its been built up over years via wagon adding earth each year. They
would load up the earth
and gravel then dump it on site compacting it. It took years to build
the dam and
while it says its over 1600' in length only a small portion of it today
is visible. Which is why I spent a good hour on the dam taking photos
and studying it. My son however was down by the lake catching tadpoles.
The sad thing about all of this is that Lake Van Norden is about to
vanish its down to 70 acres and by 2020 they say it may no longer
exists.
I guess ill never really
know other tracks I found in the valley too such as what appeared to be
a mountain lion track. Whatever made it had a big paw you could kind of
make it out in the dirt. I know that some of the mountain lions they
get up in this area can be 200lbs. As a matter in fact I have a buddy
who knew a woman killed not far from here by a mountain lion. So they
are up here and its probably the biggest threat I face only because
they hunt their prey and are very illusive. I am sure they also
attacked the sheep herds afterall you had 2000 plus sheep roaming here
when the waters of the lake receded in the warmer months.
It was a really great trip
here I am not always seeking the paranormal sometimes I just want to be
in nature. My love for nature, wildlife and the outdoors is nearly
greater then the paranormal. While I may be good at what I do gathering
evidence I find that when I am not looking for something strange ill
find it.
I drove to the top of the
valley down a road and parked. I wanted to get a photo from above and
some video to show our viewers where I hiked at below. Kind of put the
valley into perspective because its a large valley and we covered some
mileage that day. Then all of sudden I hear a scream it was not very
long but I was in the middle of the woods high above the valley and the
scream was very nearby. Rather then say scream id prefer to say
vocalization and I did catch it on video so that gets logged as
evidence.
It was an exciting day no
less and we had a nice 4th of July Celebration where I parked my truck
high up in the Pine Nut Mtns and we watched a beautiful fireworks show.
We had T-bone steaks, water melon, caramelized corn on the cob, BBQ
ribs, salad, apple crumb pie and this Italian dish. We ate
well and had a good time. It was a really nice weekend to spend with my
family and in between I had gotten some great work done. This valley
has it all history, ancient sites, strange happenings, nature and
scenic beauty. Its one of my favorite places to visit near Truckee as
it should be for most people who can appreciate this valley for all its
worth. Happy 4th of July everyone part of being an American is having
the freedom to journey wherever the road takes you!

An amazing photo I took over Summit Valley of a flying saucer/disc now I cant say this is alien but I can say its a UFO since this is obviously not a plane. You can tell the object is metallic it does give off some reflection but since its far away its hard to make out any further details so further enlargement below. Its not easy to find it that is why I posted enlargements and even a cropped photo so that our viewers can study it themselves. Over my years of research I have to say that when your not looking for something like this your going to find it and we found it. Its really hard to know everything that is flying around our skies but this is an ancient area and one tribe did believe in an ancient legend called water babies which to me sound like an advanced race of beings that made some of the local tribes sick probably from radiation sickness. The water babies rose out of lakes perhaps lived down at the bottom of them perhaps even Lake Van Norden but since the lake is today a mere pond maybe instead they took to the skies rather then rising from deep sierra lakes like this one once was. The tribes interacted with these water babies especially some of the ones found in this region so who knows. But we did the field work and we produced some results therefore you can form your own conclusions. When I arrived at the dam I seen the sun reflecting off this metallic object which to me appeared disc or saucer like. I snapped a photo then had gotten ready to film it and within a blink it was gone! |
The holes that you see within this granite rock are known as cupules. They care creating by years of grinding acorns, seeds, berries and plants that the natives utilized. The cupules are found in the forest not far from Lake Van Norden. Generally when you see these it signifies a native village once stood nearby. The lake was much larger so it would have came up to the edge of the forest but instead toay its lake, meadows and then forest. But in ancient times it was lake and forest because the body of water that was here was five times larger. I have footage of the cupules in our documentary filmed on location. |
I believeI know this does not show much but I believe a mountain lion that made this impression just because it reminds me of a giant cat paw. Then again its wider then my hand which means one of two things. The first that its a very very big mountain lion or these are toe impressions off one of these bigfoot like creatures which are quite prevalent in the Tahoe National Forest. The reason why I say that is because the two left toes are quite large which sways me from it being a big cat. This was a strange track just in the middle of a grassy area not far from the edge of the forest and only one track was visible. What do you think made this impression? |
I am measuring a track I found on the earthen dam which is fairly deep and their are no visible treds found. Its a very large impression and I am not saying bigfoot was responsible for it but I like to keep an open mind. This creatures runs all over the sierras and it does leave behind evidence if you are paying attention something many researchers fail to do. I found the track and thought its quite large just looking at it first hand. Id say that its over 6 inches wide and around 14 inches in length. I do think that someone or something made it with quite a bit of weight perhaps 300 plus pounds. I am 245lbs at the time this was taken and I could not even put a dent into this dam lol just saying! Its possible that bigfoot came down from the river on the back side and crossed the dam to get down to the lake. We probably will never know but still remember when your out in the high sierras always look for signs these creatures are very smart, elusive and they do leave behind small traces of evidence. | |
Just an example of some of the strange things I see on my journeys like this hiking boot laying on the ground. I mean seriously? What happened to the person that left it behind? Did they hike barefoot for miles on one boot? Who knows! But every year so many people coming up missing in this mountain range so the boot could have came from anywhere as far as I am concerned. I see so many strange things on my hikes ill find boots, bras, wallets, under garmets etc etc sometimes hanging on tree branches on a primitive hike where people simply do not go. Why such things are found in the middle of the wilderness always makes me wonder what happened to the person! |
|
The human mind is often trained to see patterns and faces in objects. For example if you were to look to the left within the photo you will see a broken tree trunk within it looks like a mountain man or primate type of face. Its not bigfoot or a mountain man its just broken and weathered bark. But from 200 feet away at first glance when I looked up I thought someone or something was staring at us until I zoomed in a little to reveal that it is not paranormal but rather just a broken tree. More then often in my field many paranormal groups are so quick to assume everything to be paranormal which no longer makes great finds as special since everything becomes strange or paranormal to such researchers. However, we know otherwise with years of honest solid research it is not uncommon to come across this type of thing while exploring. |
