A Pony Express and Overland Stage Station was built in 1860 and by 1862 J.J. Cushman decided to build a large ranch which led to nearly 3,000 acres of alfalfa being harvested. Soon other ranchers and farmers came to the area thus the town begin to build up until 1868 Stillwater obtained the county seat. Many of the farmers dug irrigation ditches and canals to divert the water from the Stillwater Marsh to their farms which led to the ancient Cattail Eater Tribe being forced off their lands and also taking away their water rights in an region of Nevada that the oldest mummy in North America was found thus some including myself feel the land in Stillwater is cursed. The town had a post office, blacksmith shop, school, stores, saloons, hotel, pool, theater, hay yard, ice house, restaurants, courthouse and multiple ranches. Over the years grasshoppers, droughts, floods, extreme winters and epidemics struck this little community today leaving behind many abandoned pioneer ranches which are left to the elements and the ghost that haunt them. Not much remains of Old Stillwater but I will take you on a journey to explore some abandoned farms, a historic cemetery in Stillwater, outbuildings, homesteads and remnants of downtown which once as a bustling little community. The pioneers named this place Stillwater when stagnant water surrounded the station and since the 1860's the name kind of stuck. Today Fallon one of Nevada's largest cities has kind of consumed Stillwater but if you look hard enough you will still find remnants of one of Nevada's oldest ranching towns which supplied the miners of the Comstock Lode with food for the miners in Virginia City Nevada. During the beginning of the exploration your going to get to hear some creepy music playing on an abandoned ranch with that being said Stillwater is a creepy ranching town in the middle of no mans land. I apologize that this film is not the greatest my cam had some major issues apparently getting sand inside the lens so I was having a hard time with the zoom, focus and was kind of messing with it while filming this.
The Stillwater Wildlife Refuge and Salt Marsh was once under 700 feet of water when ancient Lake Lahontan Covered a portion of Nevada. When the lake waters receded it left behind this ancient salt marsh which has been home to the Native Paiutes for thousands of years or as the tribe is known Cattail Eaters. They natives lived off this the salt marsh build Tule Canoes and utilized the cattails to build shelters, weave baskets and use the roots to make sweet cakes which surround many lakes found in the Carson Sink. Overshadowed by the beautiful Stillwater Mountains the warriors would set off for the day to hunt down big horned sheep, antelope and other wild animals. For thousands of years the natives lived peacefully on what is known today as the Stillwater Refuge When the ranchers came in the mid 1800's they re diverted allot of the water from the river, marshland and its lakes to irrigate their land. Thus in turn causing the marsh to nearly dry out which was a water source and also used by the natives to fish. No water meant no fish thus it also meant thirst. Today the area has been turned into a refuge which ill take you on a 77,000 acre journey as will journey on the old Paiute Trail, Boardwalk overlooking Foxtail Lake Dry Lake Beds, Salt Flats and even some sand dunes.The refuge is home to nearly 500 different species of wildlife including roughly 268 birds which nest, breed and migrate each year to these wetlands. At one time the refuge was much more lush but drought, vegetation control and many of the canals which were dug to irrigate the farm lands in the 1800's. I am going to take you on a journey one that might be similar in the Outback or Serengeti I know the footage is not the greatest I had gotten some sand inside the camera while hiking here and the camera was not operating at full capacity which caused the zoom to retract and allot of lens problems. But I did manage to capture some film from my journey through this ancient unique land.
