The first African-American family to settle in Geneva was the Stewart's in the early 1900s. They were not only responsible for establishing a cemetery but they also were the founders of the New Bethel A.M.E. Church. It was important to have an all black cemetery over a century ago since almost all cemeteries in the south had segregation.

The cemetery has multiple unknown burials some look like they date back to the 1800s as almost every grave is either broke, vandalized, illegible, weathered, or unknown. The cemetery sits back on also a dirt road surrounded by the woods and graves are spread our quite vastly. But most of the earlier blacks of Geneva have been buried here.

The cemetery has many giant trees growing around the graves its a real serene atmosphere. At one time nearby they called this area "The Still" which was a small turpentine camp in the area that the black community settled at.
