St. Monica Catholic Cemetery borders Westfield Historic Cemetery. The burial grounds were enclosed by wrought iron gates, fences and a stone wall by St. Monica's Catholic Church of Palatka. Inside the cemetery near one of the gates is a sign stating the cemetery was erected in 1878. So then I went into doing some research and found that their were burials long before then even so I assume that at one time St. Monica's was at one point part of Westfield Cemetery till it was sectioned off for the local Catholic Church.

The church began around 1850 as just a mission of priest from Savannah Ga. From that mission Father William J. Hamilton of Jacksonville built the first wood frame church structure and it was dedicated during 1858. Another priest named Father Charles Gaboury served as the first resident pastor in 1873 that is when perhaps it was decided that a cemetery would be needed for the parish members. That is why they purchased the cemetery but its apparent that their were burials here other then catholic at the time.

A new brick Romanesque Revival style church was built in 1887 and a two story rectory was built next door in 1910. So the parish had grown over the years just as the number of deaths within the cemetery.

One of the most popular family names here is the Ivers family which has many burials from the 1800s mainly. One of the first burials here was Catherine Ivers who was just a 3 year old girl who perished in 1861. Its very possible that their are burials before her since many of the stones are illegible or unmarked but that is one of the more earlier ones. Then their is another Ivers family member whose grave has been removed quite odd indeed but I noticed within the area many graves were moved to different cemeteries.

Then we have a grave from 1894 of a man who was electrocuted so that proves that at that time lynching's were done away with and people were executed using this method. Just like another grave of the name Arthur Emerson who died in 1949 states he was in a railway accident.

So this place is real fascinating many of the graves are surrounded by wrought iron fences which are very old, lots of grass growing around them. The family plots are so close together it makes you wonder if they put the coffins side by side touching. I would not say that its an overly haunted place but their is a presence here its an old cemetery with alot of local Catholicism history to the area.
