Split Oak Forest is one the very few ancient forest left in the state of Florida. Almost preserved this secluded area is part of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conversation Commission's Migration Park Program. It was purchased in 1994 however the previous owner of it managed a nearby cattle ranch clearing some of the areas to provide pastures. That cattle ranch was also investigated by us which will appear on this investigation.

The area is roughly 2000 acres and is known for its gopher tortoise which is a state and federally listed specials along with many other forms of wildlife. Some of the trees in the area are well over 400 years old. The area has two lakes, ponds and a few trails that meander for miles in oak forest as well as weeping willows that grace the path.

The split oak is said to be over 200 years old and this live oak known as Quercus Virginiana is native to the area. However the forest was named after this tree  that split 50 years ago  due to the weight of its lateral branches. Although separation has stressed the tree it does continue to survive and provide a substrate for ferns and other plans nearby.

The Live oak you can physically walk in between as you can clearly it growing on each side. Some of the limbs to the tree are growing on the ground and are quite large. Judging by the split truck it appears that the tree could very well be up to 400 years old. The entire area has an eerie feeling to it.

Nestled between Lake Hart and Mary Jane this place is very well used by hikers, campers, and horseback riders. We seen many horse hoof prints however no sign of campers.  In addition to this is pine flatwoods, marshlands, cypress swamps, and oak hammocks. Many animals are seen back here such as sand hill cranes, wood ducks, owls, wood storks, eagles, bobcats, white tailed deer, pileated woodpeckers and more. The trails are unique in the fact that they are canopied by ancient trees.
