Silver Terrace Cemeteries
Investigation 2

Back about four to five years ago I was enthralled when I adventured into the Silver Terrace Cemeteries nestled in the hills of Virginia City. I have heard rumors that due to all the fencing being torn down these lacking boundaries make up for the combination of up to 22 burial grounds so far I have only explored about half of them.

I was excited it was Halloween night a Saturday in October 2015 one of my favorite times of year. I guess I like the thought of pumpkin seeds, jack o' lanterns, pumpkin lattes, leaves falling and scary movies. But I also love to investigate various haunted locations every year this time of year never missing out on what the season has to offer.

Due to Nevada day Halloween for us fell on October 30th therefore the 31st for me was freed on up to do for the first time in many years an investigation on Halloween night. Every year I do a nice decorated light show at my home for the kids and hand out candy by setting up tables. This year I could spend time handing out candy then have Halloween to go out into the night and live it up. All of us deep down inside wish we could just wander a bunch of cemeteries under the stars on Halloween so I was stoked. It has been years since we did a project on Halloween so it was a big treat for our group.

As a kid I use to spend till midnight trick or treating we climbed fences watched scary movies and ran through the night till we could not anymore. Times have certainly changed since then but as a paranormal investigator there is no haunted place id rather be then in Virginia City on a Halloween night.

Silver Terrace Cemetery was at one time full of lush gardens all Victorian and back in the day it was about the only place the local kids could go to play. It was more of a public park then burial grounds because at the time during the era their were to many mills, mines and industrial buildings consuming this boom town. So all you really had to get some piece of mind was this location.

I was excited Tammy and I went out for dinner before the big investigation and I had a whole some meal with turkey medallions. I also had pumpkin pie, coffee, bacon and all the trimmings. It is sometimes nice to get together have a nice dinner before we physically go out and look for spooks in the night. What more could I ask for then to eat a hearty meal then go climbing around the burial grounds of VC at night?

Its not easy to get into Silver Terrace at night it either cost allot of money or its inaccessible. This is due to vandals they have really ruined it for most of us who want to do research here. When I visited before sundown a few years ago I told Tammy were going to come back here one day at night and check this place out. Day or night does not matter ghost are always going to be here regardless in my opinion but if you want the whole spook factor night is a good start.

I was in my cane, top hat, mask and cape we entered the gates the sun was slowing going down. The sky was full of pinks, orange, blues and purples as the sun went behind good ole Mount Davidson. To enter the cemetery you must first enter the I.O.O.F. and Masonic burial grounds. Both are very prestigious and contain Virginia Cities most prominent residents.

At the time I was wandering around it was only Tammy and I that had the cemetery to ourselves it was nice. My goal though was to make it up to Boot Hill before other ghost hunters consumed the area. Boot Hill was where they hung outlaws back in the day as a matter in fact Julia Bulette's killer was hung at this very location after he was sentenced to his death at the courthouse just a couple miles away that we investigated a couple weeks prior to this investigation.

I heard stories about Boot Hill not sure I believe them all but if you make to the top of the hill one can see great views of the burial grounds as its the highest point in Silver Terrace. Its also where Captain Storey is buried who the county is named off of. I would end up doing EVP sessions here twice once before dusk once later into the night. Its not hard to see the Comstock and its mines all around you from here nearby. Most of the dump piles surround the cemetery because mining went out just a matter of feet from its gates.

We would hike deeper on in until we hiked out to another hill with a cross. Where the cross stands is the Catholic burial grounds. This burial ground still has a gate and fencing around it. We actually brought backpacks so we had food, drinks and extra supplies to have a nice break at night up by the cross itself. Strangely Tammy took a few photos of me next to the cross and they never showed up I found that to be a little odd because the flash did go off yet when I had gotten home nada. I had baked these pumpkin muffins so they definitely added some yummy flavor to our spooky night.

The cemetery at night is another world its easy to get lost and its really hard to find all the burial grounds as they blend. You have the Pacific Coat Pioneers, Knights Of Pythias, Redmen, Firemen, West End, Country and Silver Terrace. I tried to divide them on our site into categories my first time it was a bit difficult to do because one blends into the next and only a few fences remain.

I think I spent most of my night in the Catholic Cemetery as it has some of the finest gravestones in the county and wrought iron enclosures. But I would not stay here very long people that come here on Halloween act like idiots making spooky sounds, jumping out trying to scare you and doing seances. Personally this is why I either work alone or with only a select few in this field. Tammy and I had gotten separated it took almost a half hour to find eachother here and when I found her she said some dude tried to scare her. People act so childish most of the ones who own groups in Virginia City have no extensive backgrounds in this field but when it comes to making a buck they are right there!

This is the type of cemetery you cant see in a day or two its huge and at night it gets confusing because it starts to look the same. You climb through the brush and over one hill its just graves upon graves. At night all you can really see is Virginia City all lit up and the giant V on Mt. Davidson. But finding certain graves is like a needle in a haystack. There is this angel statue supposed to be a haunted site never found it during the day its easy to locate at night impossible.

I also put the glowing tombstone legends to rest as I went to the site this occurs and did a study on it. The glow is caused from the vehicles at night below the cemetery who come around this corner which curves around the southern end. Some stones are polished and smooth thus the headlights cause this effect so I debunked the whole glowing stone urban myth.

I took allot of night photos in the cemetery, EVP and readings. The EMF readings were not high at all about average but nothing to signify that their was any ghost found here. I think I had gotten it to spike once talking to them but it was brief. There are a couple cemeteries on the southern edge that are fenced off I found that we spent time in. Its kind of funny because during my visit here nobody investigated or checked out them. One of them was full of Chinese interments and well not one person in my hour break here visited.

Most folks focus on Boot Hill where hangings took place but in my opinion the ghost can be anywhere on these grounds its a big place and every grave tells a story. I also brought my tripod which folks rudely walked in front of me many times without a care in the world. There are a few gravesites I was working with when another paranormal group or tourist just barreled through us without a care in the world. Again this is why I prefer to work alone people want to see something so bad and this is all about thrills nobody takes it seriously anymore it seems if not they are not considerate towards others.

The winds were howling it was getting bad three times my tripod fell over my camera had a piece break right off of it lucky for me it still worked but its the price you pay when your outdoors doing this kind of thing. It also would make it harder for me to get EVP's although my first visit here I had gotten quite a few of them signifying this place has something of an unseen nature that haunts these hills.

I stayed about four hours here I could not handle it anymore there was other paranormal groups who came and most of them acted retarded sorry but its the truth. When you get folks who do nothing but screw around it makes it hard to look for spirits as a matter in fact it ruins my ability to focus and do scientific research into the paranormal. Any good investigator knows having a bunch of teenagers screaming all night and laughing is not the best of investigations.

All in all I soaked it up for what it was I had gotten to walk among the oldest and most historic tombstones of the west at night under the stars in Virginia City. Some folks hand lanterns at times I walked around with no flashlight which I am sure spooked other groups who passed by me in the dark and thought to themselves what the hell is the deal with this dude in his sunglasses lol.

I always visit the firemen cemetery which is a bit deplorable many of the graves have suffered some amount of vandalism. But its one of my favorite places because I myself have always wanted to be a firefighter and these men fought bravely for Virginia City as it almost burned down completely twice.

I can say Silver Terrace is haunted I cant say it was haunted on our second investigation on Halloween night. More or less with all the people and other groups if there was any ghost they scared them off. However I did see some new grave sites I never visited before and found some very interesting hillside burials. l did not see any ghosts but something did touch my shoulder on one of the dark lonely wagon roads leading to other cemeteries.

Tammy and I decided to leave salvage the rest of our Halloween where we had pumpkin seeds at home, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin lattes, scary movies and Tamriel to play. We put in a pizza and made a night of it. Surprisingly Virginia City on my way out was dead for Halloween on a Saturday! I expected it to be more bustling and to see lit up pumpkins all over but instead I seen downtown lit up and kind of looking like a ghost town. It had a creepy feeling which is more or less my type of thing. Most of the locations in VC I have investigated far more then other groups or these groups giving tours so I know what places are haunted.

I think the best thing that came out of the cemetery was the fact that I have some nice night photos of some of the graves found within. Its not easy to get night shots here since your not allowed here at night. Then again many places I am not allowed I still take on I am a paranormal investigator we do what we gotta do to get that story for our fans, friends and those with paranormal interest.

The month of October in Virginia City was exciting for us we did the old Storey County Jail/Courthouse and the Comstock Gold Mill. Then we topped it off on Halloween with wandering the thousands of graves in Silver Terrace Cemeteries. Even thought it was dusk out I seen parts of this cemetery I did not see during my first visit and who knows maybe in the future will do one final third grand finale of an adventure here when I can get a bunch of my paranormal friends to come up for a visit.

With Halloween coming to an end it left with me memories one ill never forget. Who wouldn't want to spend an evening here on Halloween? For me though my night would not be long as in the morning I had to get up early and get firewood for winter. I have to each year get a few loads then stack it in my yard so that I have it to keep warm in the winter. There is nothing but mountains where I am at and it starts to snow sometimes in October. Luckily for us Halloween night in Virginia City was rather pleasant so all in all it really was a fantastic night!

My Halloween Dinner prior to the investigation at Silver Terrace. I had mashed potatoes, turkey smothered with gravy, green beans, bacon and pumpkin pie with some hot coffee. I do feel its important to experience investigations as a whole by enjoying some good eats before or even after a good ghostly investigation. Its important to eat well and drink merry its the key to being a good paranormal investigator by staying healthy. When I say healthy I mean laughing, talking about the investigation and most of all attending the investigation feeling good in general which produces at least for me better results. If your going to do anything in life you should always go big! I had a new shirt, good meal and like the song I could feel it coming in the air tonight!

I captured this anomaly towards the back of the cemetery sorry the photo is blurry I did not use a flash and when I took the picture I was actually hiking as well as hurrying before the sun went down to get some daytime footage. The first photo to the left you can see a white anomaly it sort of has a tail at the end of it. Which leads me to believe this is a willow wisp which is a type of spirit or rather entity. The second photo to the right was taken just a second later and you can clearly see the anomaly is gone or has vanished. Behind the fence are old mines those are not hills but rather dump piles created from the debris and earth that was brought up from the mines. Their are hundreds of miles of tunnels below the cemetery many of the miners who worked in those mines died from fires, tragic accidents, falls and floods. In theory not all ghost that haunt the cemetery were interred here some may just be simply miners who died tragically in the mines which surround this very cemetery.

This mine shaft sits a few feet from some gravesites within the cemetery and not its not deep but you should still use cautious not to fall in. The mines and the cemetery really go hand in hand. Before burials began to rise miners tried a hand in mining in the hills surrounding Virginia City including the hill that Silver Terrace Cemeteries resides on. This may just be spiritual energy or residue captured by our cameras. I am not certain but it appears to be a pinkish red mass to the right of the photo which dissipates behind the wrought iron closure and rises a few feet above it covering a fairly large area. This was actually taken not to far from Boot Hill where the lawless were hung.

Wild Mustangs also trample many of the gravestones and unfortunately this leads to total decimation. When the wild horses run through here they break gravestones and topple wood enclosures. I guess it kind of is expected in the wild west its hard to find anything that last to long without the elements or nature toppling it. The reason why I mention this is that you can clearly see horse dung on the grave. More then likely a mustang stepped right over this grave site and they may have even had a hand at one time breaking this tombstone. Not all destruction is caused by humans but we must learn to live with these beautiful creatures and share these hills.

The audio that I recorded from our first investigation here was stolen you can read about it by clicking the above banner.
