Located on the northern waterfront is Fisherman's Wharf a delightful bustling part of the San Francisco Bay. Its not only one of the oldest areas of the city but its also known for its piers, ships, ferries and maritime history. Back before the railroad came to be in the region or bridges such as the Golden Gate you had ferries which would transport people and even autos to and from. The Hyde street pier served these ferries which would transport those across the bay to Marin County and Berkeley. Today more or less ferries are just a means of luxury rather then transportation however due to this factor historic piers like Hyde's Street were no longer needed.

The warehouse which served the California Fruit Canners Association a historic brick building later became the parks visitors center. The museum another historic building in the Aquatic Park Historic District which is also part of the National Maritime Museum contains over 35,000 artifacts. These artifacts connect the regions bay history with the life out in the Pacific Ocean. The Hyde Street Pier, Museum, Visitor Center, Fort Mason Library, Boats and Ships all became part of a massive historical park that you see today. In 1951 it was called the San Francisco Maritime Museum however in 1978 when the National Park service took over it the name was changed to The San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park.

Although the museum has some great artifacts such as ship models, photos, anchors and even part of a gold rush ship the grandest finds of all reside along the Hyde Street Pier. Those include the C.A. Thayer, Eureka, Hercules, Eppleton Hall, Alma and the Balclutha. The Balclutha was a rigged sailing ship built in 1886 and over 300' in length. It sailed ports around the world including Cape Horn 17 times transporting cargo to and from the bay area. Although it resembles a pirate ship it was a ship that was a place where even the captains wife berthed a child on. It was also in a classic film known as Mutiny on the Bounty! Today the Maritime Park houses these vessels and over 100 smaller craft which are anchored nearby.

The visitors center which is also a museum houses the Fresnel lighthouse lens that graced old San Francisco's waterfront. This also includes some great views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. We have photos of both found within these pages for your enjoyment but also for others to learn about this amazing location. There is also a boat builders shop considering that most of the anchored vessels are undergoing or have gone through some form of restoration. Just as the grounds old rusted anchors, barrels and artifacts can be found scattered throughout the park.

The library has thousands of maps and charts including photos, motion pictures and oral histories. The archives includes oceanic and coastal trade along with ship logs. Alone their are over 120,000 vessel and shipyard drawings. I often think to myself if a tsunami, major earthquake or disaster were to occur all of this would be lost. Most of the artifacts found today were added over the years after the 1906 quake. Nearby is also an Art Deco building which was at one time a public bathhouse in 1936 just a small tidbit of history.

I have not had as a paranormal investigator to see everything the National Park offers and for that matter it could take years to look through everything. So our main focus would be on the much larger vessels which date back all to a century or more ago when they were in operation. I have found through my years of research that generally most ships are haunted whether its residual energy or the deceased members of the crew who had a love for the high seas. The men spent their lives on these vessels for months at a time some may have even lost their lives to the sea during severe storms. It was a life of loneliness not luxury as well as tragedy. Most of these men slept in a small bunk and work on board was around the clock even if it meant polishing the decks or hoisting the sails.

Based on my first investigation I found the activity to be minimal a few strange photos and EVP's. I would love to one day return when I have more time to do a much more thorough investigation. However its sometimes nice to leave some things to the imagination about an old captain haunting his ship. What I have learned about vessels is they make all sorts of strange sounds, creaks and banging sounds. When you learn to weed those out you may get lucky capturing something speaking from the other side. When we first opened our doors in 2001 I spent two different nights on a ship known as the Aquarama Bayliner both during stormy weather and it reminded me a little of being on board these vessels in the maritime park. I experienced some real haunting's on board that ship and believe that the vessels including the artifacts connecting them to the crews who used them perhaps haunt them.
