The little part of town that rises above downtown historical Placerville is called Hang Town. This is where the cemetery is on that very hill beginning in 1850 burials began.  Many of them were the first pioneers to take on this region which has two different extremes between winter and summer. Life was harsh many of them saw that the land within Placerville was fruitful not just for farming but also mining.

The trees that grow within the cemetery were around before the first shovel ever touched the ground and if they only could talk what would they say? It has been noted that its haunted and it just might be. If anything this burial ground gets an 10 on eeriness. More then half of the graves are tilted, broken or being consumed by the earth. In the fall when the leaves fall a dismal feeling is lingering in the air.

Some of the internments found here were the first settlers of Placerville which today is one of the most bustling towns in the sierra foothills. When Placerville was founded so was El Dorado County which is surrounded completely by the ElDorado National Forest. A forest of so much beauty, purity and Bigfoot lore. Finding the cemetery in amidst of all of this is a gem.

There was an attempt to do some restoration work years ago so some of the tombstones were pieced back together. While other ones remain in ruins just as some burials are not marked. Allot of the grave sites are just stone walls left behind cracking and crumbling's. It is not to difficult to tell how hold the cemetery is when one of the first grave sites I toured said 1850. While others seemed to take place throughout the rest of the 1800's till their was no longer any room for anymore interments.

A sign hangs at a gated entrance which is in wrought iron with the words Old City Cemetery words rusting away. A tree in the center of the cemetery is nearly split in half perhaps a lightening strike or the high winds of winter. Either coincidence just shows everyone that a huge part of the cemeteries condition can be attributed to the harsh winters that consume Placerville for nearly half of the year. Storm after storm and today these graves tell a story about the first pioneers to brave the sierras. Some mined while others were prominent individuals who owned various businesses in Placerville California.

Just further beyond the hill there was a place called Hangtown Creek where a mining camp would be established in 1848. Millions of dollars in gold was found in the ravines and hills all surrounding this cemetery. Eventually Hangtown served as a supply center for mining camps and transportation hub for the Comstock Lode in Virginia City NV.  Mark Hopkins, Leland Stanford, Philip Armour, John M. Studebaker and Edwin Markham were among the well known men who contributed to Placerville's history. Men like these would be found at the Old City Cemetery overlooking the very town they built. Some of these men were the recipients of mail that was delivered on the Pony Express route. Snowshoe Thompson would traverse 70 miles on skis just to deliver medicine, mail and supplies. He never carried much supplies for himself let alone any weapons and could make the journey one way in one day. Today Snowshoe Thompson's grave can be found at the Genoa Historic Cemetery.

Life was harsh cemeteries like these symbolize how some men died young while others had elaborate graves with beautiful wrought iron work. Most of the people buried here were wealthy they set the tone of what it meant to live a life in the wild west. Back over a century ago grizzly bears, wolves and sometimes hostile natives were encountered. Despite all the mishaps of illness, murder, natural deaths and accidents a cemetery came only within two years of the first settlers to lay there feet on its rich hills. Only this hill is rich in historical interments who made the Pony Express operable, ranched and mined!
