Nestled in the heart of the Tahoe National Forest is grove of Giant Sequoias, Sequoiadendron Giganteum that are though to vary in age from 700 to 2,000 years in age. This is the northernmost grove of Giant Sequoias found within the high sierras and even till this day still remaining isolated untouched by man. More then often when we think of Lake Tahoe we never put into perspective that the region is more then just a lake but also a place that has rivers, streams, meadows, numerous peaks and a variety of other lakes in the area. The grove however has its own special place in this national forest that so very few know about that really deserves more attention so that we can all do our part to preserve this wonder of the world.

More then likely the first men to lay eyes on this grove were the Miwok Tribe they may have even had a village at this grove simply because the underground springs could provide them with virtually an endless amount of water found here. The tribe would gather what is known as Bear Clovers if you check out our nature section of this addition you can see one I photographed. White flowers will appear on them from May to about July. The natives called this plant Kit-Kit-Dizze who would brew the leaves to make a curative. It also was called Mountain Misery named by a less romantic traveler. This plant in fact is a member of the Rose Family its bush has green leaves with a smooth red bark. I seen allot of these plants in the grove and such plants were rare so more then likely the natives probably collected them under the shade of these giant Sequoias probably for many centuries. Allot of rare plant species can be found in the grove including Dogwoods and a variety of wildlife that the natives probably took interest in. More then likely these trees were sacred to the Miwoks and more then likely such large trees could be used as a landmark along their trading or hunting routes.

In 1855 a prospector named Joe Matlock stumbled upon the grove while seeking out claims. This was afterall an area that had quite a few towns surrounding this grove that were slowly encroaching sooner or later upon it. Why? Well these mining towns needed lumber to build up these boom towns for general stores, cabins, mills and even in the mines. Allot of the boom towns surrounding the grove were very large therefore back in the day allot of the times the miners or townsfolk had no idea what they were cutting down was special perhaps even ancient. Therefore in the mid 1800s a huge influx of pioneers came from the nearby boom towns of Iowa Hill, Deadwood, Michigan Bluff, Foresthill and Last Chance which simply put these trees at a greater risk of being felled. While the Placer Big Tree Grove may not have the oldest trees in the sierras it still has some that predate when Columbus came to the Americas. Therefore with that being said Joe Matlock made sure that these trees could not be cut to be used for mine timbers and by 1892 measures were put into place to prohibit any cutting of these trees or the grove they reside in.

Josepth Matlock came to the west in the 1850's with his wife Betsey Ann and two young daughters Minna and Henrietta. They lived in Michigan Bluff and Foresthill therefore this grove could not have been found by a better man. Unlike the Calaveras Big Trees that fell victims to lumberers this grove was cared for by his family. By raising concerns it allowed the forest service to designate this location as a Botanical Area. Strangely this grove is more distance then any other grove and the smallest may I add. It has six living sequoias which is a group of four small trees, two larger isolated trees and two fallen trees that both supposedly fell in 1861 during the Civil War. What I love about the grove is how deep in the high sierras it resides its very offbeat nestled on a high ridge surrounded by deep gorge like valleys. The grove kind of sits in this little bowl in the forest surrounded by lush hills by Lodgepole pines, Cedars, Sugar Pines and Douglas-Firs with the biggest tree currently having a diameter of about 12'. I found that one of the Lodgepole Pines is about 600 years old here and has a diameter of over 6' therefore many tree species are impressive in this grove. Most of these trees been here before you or I before the automobile and the sinking of the Titanic which is simply amazing!

Four of the trees were named to honor World War I leaders which ill address more in depth further below in this article. Some might be wondering why drought had not affected this grove? Its very simple their is an underground spring and small creek that trickles through the grove therefore the roots are always being fed with fresh ground water for trees that can absorb up to a 1000 gallons of water per day. At one time Giant Sequoias covered allot of the west coast all the way to back when the dinosaurs roamed earth some could have easily towered to over 300' in height! Every time I journey here out west and see trees of this magnitude like the big kid I am could easily envision a dinosaurs slowly walking through the forest under these trees. Placer Big Trees Grove is a place to day dream, relax and appreciate these trees which have been a part of our planet for millions of years and really have never even changed the slightest. These trees are truly the real giants of this earth and today all of you have the opportunity to enjoy them the same way I did with my loved ones.

If you want to see these trees its a great loop trail that goes up and down forested hills then descends down into this bowl like area where the grove resides. Honestly, this is the place to take your family on a picnic even little kids. Just bare in mind when you do so make sure you carry bear mace here this is a grove and one that resides in the middle of the wilderness. While I had a family picnic myself a bear was lumbering through the area. If you watch our video "Surreal Giants Of Our Past" their is a man walking his two dogs that warned me about seeing one. We just missed it because we packed up our lunch and started hiking back so more then likely it smelt our lunch. Its okay to camp, picnic and hike out here but also do so using caution therefore carry bear mace. Over the years I have come to also realize groves like this are the perfect areas to Squatch at. Bigfoot does roam the Tahoe National Forest we have found out this time and time again in our journeys. I also found that ancient groves like these are also home to ancient monsters and many things we have yet to understand. When I visited Calaveras Big Trees Grove we went for an isolated hike below the Sequoais down to the river when something began to throw rocks at us while measuring tracks. So in all do honestly I think these ancient trees a groves may attract Sasquatch and Bigfoot like creatures whom might look at these trees as part of their ancient roots therefore they may not even want man encroaching upon them! During my first expedition here we experienced a strange rotten egg like odor that had came and dissipated numerous times a smell often associated with these creatures.

The trail has about 160 acres of small nature trails and hikes however the grove within it is only about 2 acres in size. John Muir was the first naturalist to visit numerous Sequoia Groves in California. Muir thought that during the Pleistocene Era the trees may have been carried due to glacial action and if not the trees the seeds that blanket the groves forest floor for example get picked up. The glacial action eventually took a foothold within the sierra mountains and when the ice receded seedlings began to germinate. This would explain the 80 groves that so far been discovered in the sierras that contain these giant sequoias. Placer Grove is very unique as the seeds that germinate here have six cotyledons that normally should only be three. I heard that its possible to see five immature leaves that sprout from a seed but six would be considering a rarity. Some might wonder why the grove is so small well this is due to inbreeding as these trees have never been crossbred with any other giant sequoias from any other groves. This is a very isolated grove which has always kept it in the family and probably its trees were very similar to the ones seen in the Pleistocene Era or in simple terms all original like a Classic Hotrod!

Surprisingly their is a very young sequoia growing here its not very tall around 20' in height which started growing here 85 years ago as you can see growth of these trees is a very slow process. With a grove of this size more then likely new trees only sprout every few hundred years as fertility is very low. Which means that their is hope even though the trees grow VERY slowly that this grove will continue to live on as long as fires do not disrupt or burn the grove to the ground. The problem is that fire has knocked on the doorstep of the grove on more then one occasion. If you watch our video called "Surreal Giants Of The Past" the first half hour of the documentary I take our viewers for miles through areas that been hit by wildfires surrounding the grove. You can see their are entire mountains covered by burnt trees and pay closer attention because at the time of our first adventure here another fire was ranging west of here that is why it was so smoky in the footage. We must always treat this grove as if its our own home always put out your camp fires if you camp here for the night and treat these trees with love. Hugging these trees is one of the best feelings in the world but if you do not want to hug them then sit back with a pipe like I did day dreaming under one of them.

The tallest tree in the grove is known as the Joffre tree named after a French Marshall in WWI whom was named Joseph Jacques Cesaire Joffre. The tree not only is 250' tall and has a diameter of around 10'. Next to this tree is a massive cedar tree also worth taking a glimpse at. Then we have the Pershing Tree which stands at 225' tall but is 12' at its diameter. It was named for General John J. "Blackjack" Pershing an American WWI Commander. At the base of this tree is a hole that is burnt badly this is due to the fact that pine cones, needles and rotted bark that rolled down the hill to come to rest here again the trunk then were set ablaze most likely from a forest fire. During such a forest fire hot ashes probably blew in the wind igniting a small fire at the base of the trunk. The Pershing did survive the fire and continues each year to heal what is known as a Catface/Scar. In another century the catface will completely vanish and nobody will ever have known it even existed. Both of these trees were dedicated during a ceremony here which took place in August of 1920.

Their is also a set of four younger Sequoia's all grouped together which most folks miss because they are not as large as the Pershing or Joffre trees. But the far one to the left was named after W.B. Lardner a state senator from Auburn and the one on the right was named after Douglas Haig, a British General in WWI. The two trees in the middle were never named for some reason! In the brochure I read that in 1892 the Lardner Tree was heavily torn up by bears and that a also scarred up the tree trying to climb to the top of it.  The four trees appear to look very red this is because its very fibrous also very thick. When animals use the bark for nesting material or food they leave behind shredded bark at the base of the tree which exposes fresh bark underneath the outer layer. Thus these trees appear to have a reddish hue.

Their are two trees found in the grove that supposedly both fell in 1861 the first one was 154' long and 10' in diameter during a winter storm. The tree is very well preserved these trees are resilient to rotting and fungi. So over the years it has seen very little changes however a layer of soil, pine needles, leaves etc have formed around the tree therefore multiple plant species grow on top of it including a 90 year old cedar tree. The cedar tree that grows toward the top of this tree has no fire scarring however the fallen tree does which signifies the fire that occurred around this grove was before the Cedar ever grew. More then likely fire weakened this tree and when a massive winter storm hit the area in 1861 it simply fell the entire tree. During that same windy winter storm its also believed that the Roosevelt Tree also had fallen named after Theodore Roosevelt our 26th president of the United States. This is an amazing tree you can see the roots which were exposed when the tree had fallen. Despite that it fell over 130 years ago the bark has not decayed nor weathered away despite droughts, harsh winters, two forest fires or fungi. The Roosevelt Tree does cross over the trail therefore it had to be cut so you could pass through the fallen tree. The tree still has an impressive branch that is embedded in the soil often called "Widowmakers" simply because if you cut a tree like this down and were hit by such a branch you surely would succumb to death leaving behind your wife. Also just to make a mental note the Roosevelt tree was over 200' in height and had a 16' diameter at its base. This probably at one time was the biggest tree in this grove but even giants fall whether they are brought down by the wraith of mother nature or man himself these giant Sequoias will always face extinction.

Their is no other tree in the world like the Giant Sequoia with its reddish bark, sheer size, deep green foliage and glow. I have visited some of the largest trees in the world and all of them are special to me. But Placer Big Tree Grove in a sense is surreal here you are in the middle of the mountains hiking down into this grove of trees then been here for hundreds of years. What makes it even more unique is that they reside in isolation. If you want to see them you have to work for it by driving up into the high sierras then hiking up into the grove. All it takes is a few people like us to make a different such as raising awareness of their existence but also history which will hopefully inspire everyone an opportunity to do their part by protecting them even further. For me this is not about the paranormal but its about these trees simply be us even sharing these beautiful giants with our viewers it gives us some sense of  peace so that way all of you can enjoy them the same way we did also. When I journey through this grove I feel like I am in some mystical forest with big trees, monsters in the woods and so small. You kind of feel like your in some Lord Of The Rings movie you can only imagine how Joe Matlock felt in 1855 when he stood at the bottom of the Roosevelt Tree and leaving him I am sure at the time in a state of awe!
