After we left Jackson Butte we decided it would be time to
finish off the last leg of our expedition as we had a couple hours of light
left. I try to bunch our projects together closely so that we can manage our
time to the fullest so we can see as much as we can possibly see.
In this case we would head to Amador Counties oldest mining
towns known as Drytown. I was going to explore Drytown first but then decided it
might be better to get New Chicago out of the way. New Chicago is not a very
large ghost town its scattered but most of the town site is on private ranches
so access is very limited.
I would drive past the St. Stephen's Cemetery in Drytown which many residents
from New Chicago are buried here. I kind of figured I would come back to the
graveyard because normally the gates are locked here and even researchers have a
hard time gaining access. So I was very stoked driving past it because I knew I
could finish off sunset in this cemetery and exploring Drytown a little for the
grand finale.
It was a big hard to get back to New Chicago some of the dirt
roads dead end on ranches so your stuck having to turn around and try to figure
out a way back here. It was to me a maze to be honest with you because my GPS
kept taking me down dead ends.
I love the little dirt roads back here they are narrow and
shady its a very very remote area up in the California foothills of the sierra.
Its hard to believe a town at one time existed back here. Because today these
hills are part of cattle country and ranch lands. This means the houses,
businesses, mills and mines are all long gone from its boom era.
I finally found a paved road which I guess is considered Main
Street passing by a small lake. My regret is should have stopped at the pond
just to bird watch but I had gotten side tracked when off in the distance I
could see the head frame for the Gover - Fremont Mine.
Right as your entering New Chicago there is a small metal sign
and just above that on a hill is an old homestead. More then likely it belonged
to a miner but its really old and gives this semi ghost town some character.
Their is also another sign just up the road it says sign 17
however its the only sign I ever seen with some sort of history. So the other
signs have either been removed, stolen or exist on some of the ranches we cannot
get access to.
On the hill was this concrete block perhaps part of the mill
or some kind of tram or ore dropping system. I also seen an old shed, a few old
barns and trust me plenty of cattle. The cattle were mooing like crazy when I
first pulled on up they were not having it when I walked up to the fence to try
to zoom in on mill ruins.
This town has quite a few turkeys or rather vultures or should
I say turkey vultures. There was this trough with a few of them sitting on the
edge drinking water. I also seen some turkeys up on a hill side and a few cross
the road. I cant tell if they are vultures or turkeys but from what I remember
when I lived near New Chicago many years ago I seen plenty of turkeys crossing
the roads in gold country so they are abundant up here.
Out in a pasture I seen a series of mill ruins not far from
the Gover Fremont sign. Near another ranch or old barn I seen a second set of
mill ruins which were much larger and more extensive or prominent. My guess is
the town had a few mills to process ore afterall even gold from Drytown could be
exported here for processing.
I did visit on Fremont Road the massive head frame again on
private property but you can see the metal head frame from anywhere in the area.
The shafts up here were deep nearly 3k so its no wonder they have blocked off
access to the head frame due to safety issues.
Down the road I found a third set of mill ruins very small
though which included a basement and a few other foundations surrounding it.
Then beyond that I found another structure but only its shell remained and it
was so overgrown down this steep hill I was not able to see exactly what it was.
But it looked like a forth mill.
Keep in mind there is a ghost town not many know about which
is lost called Lower Rancheria which is less then a mile from New Chicago. They
probably utilized these mills in New Chicago at one point in time. There is
allot of little dirt roads back here but most of it is ranch property so after
driving around and getting discouraged I decided that I had seen and gotten most
of what I needed to put it up on our website for others to enjoy.
I also seen old homesteads maybe they were made to look old
but were being used instead as stables for horses. The windows and the doors
were all gone as they sat in a corral. Before farms or ranch land existed back
here you had dozens of homes that miners and there families lived in.
I eventually after stopping and going for a bit ended up back
where I started at the old miners cabin. I walked around it to take some photos
and made my way inside. I did not get to explore it because there was so much
rusty barbed wire on the ground and outside the door it made things a bit
unsafe. But the cabin was in ruins from the elements however there was a shelf
to the left full of old glass bottles.
All in all it was a nice small little project I am sure their
is more to see but most of this ghost town resides on private farms. Its hard to
know what is on the other side of that hill or down this road when everything is
gates because cattle are roaming around. But I am sure there are other ruins and
older structures hidden from plain site. I know there is a massacre and cemetery
site a mile from here but again on ranch land.
Its hard to believe that so many lived here at one time kind
of makes you wonder what happened. The entire area has been consumed by working
ranches there is no police station, post office, museums, businesses, schools,
banks or stores. The closest you can get to civilization would be to visit
Drytown which is just a couple miles way.
I would leave New Chicago a bit perplexed because nearly all
the historic signs are gone which your supposed to be able to read. I did not
find everything but I know that at the corner of Main and Fremont was the heart
of this once bustling mining town. Some sites are so close yet so far as your
separated by barbed wire. But in all due fairness most of the town sites exist
on private ranches therefore with livestock running around and farm john with
his shotgun its not a really great idea.
Since I did not find anywhere to set the grill up to bbq some
sausage with potato salad I decided we would head on out to Drytown Cemetery
which has plenty of benches, grass and trees to relax at. We could investigate
and research the cemetery then finish off our day up in Drytown which was just
down the road.
Peace,
Lord Rick |
This small graveyard near an oak is called Parson's Plot or Cemetery. It contains eight graves with the first interment occurring in 1875 while the last interment occurred in 1923. They consider the cemetery to be part of New Chicago since the mining camp of Lower Rancheria has faded from history. Their was a massacre that occurred near here at a place called the Rancheria House. Mary Ann Badger Parsons married Captain Nathaniel Parsons raising four children near here and where the massacre occurred. Mr. Parsons purchased the house where the massacre occurred in 1855 and got a pretty good deal I am sure then eventually his wife would join him. Their is also some Millers and Dynan's buried here which were related to the Parsons whether that was there grandchildren or spouses of their kin. Today the cemetery sits on private property I did pass fairly close to it but was not aware of its history or that it even existed till I research the New Chicago area a little bit more in depth. New Chicago sort of absorbed the Lower Rancheria which today is long gone. You have to wonder if the site where the massacre occurred is haunted while the Parsons had no involvement in the incident they did move to town right after it occurred and purchased the property where it transpired. |
