The Mormon Island Relocation Cemetery goes hand in hand with our Click Here: Folsom Lake Gold Rush Settlements Preservation Project. It all began in the year of 1848 when a group of Mormons from Sutter's Fort who were also part of a battalion were hunting deer and found gold on the banks of the nearby American River. This sparked many towns, settlements and mining camps in what is Folsom Lake today.

Each settlement had its own burial grounds or cemeteries some of the earliest miners on the west coast were buried here as early as 1848. Death and disease was not uncommon in the mining communities. Some men were alone killed for their gold while others died in unfortunate accidents such as drowning or coming down with an ailment. Generally most of the mining towns the biggest being Mormon Island would bury some of their dearly departed right behind many of the towns structures.

Each mining community appeared to be segregated whether it was based on ethnicity or religion. The names of the communities were Mormon Island, Salmon Falls, Negro Hill, Condemned Bar, McDowell's Hill, Natural Dam, Tweed, Dolton's Bar, Prairie City, Chan Lin Din, Beckholdt, Packwood Smith and Carrollton Bar. Each also had a cemetery and was a settlement that mined the river for its gold bounty.

In 1954 the Army Corps of Engineers erected the Mormon Island Relocation Cemetery for the sole purpose to exhume all the old graveyards moving them to one burial ground. This was because in 1954 the Folsom Dam was being built as they had plans to flood the North and South Fork river basin to create the lake. The dark truth is that during the relocation many of the graves were either lost while other ones were not relocated at all. So from our research we have found that the dry lake beds where the town sites once stood and even this cemetery are equally haunted as they are near one another.

I have read some news articles of mountain bikers and hikers in the area finding grave sites in the Eldorado Hills which surrounds Folsom Lake. But it is also evident that perhaps this was to big of a project for the Army Corps Of Engineers to take on. They had very little time to exhume all the graves then relocated them to the cemetery you see in our photo galleries. While I was wandering the relocation cemetery I found numerous graves that are blank or say unknown. Many of the grave sites are of early pioneers who we know little about so I think the EVP's we captured are a direct attribute of the dearly departed perhaps feeling forgotten at least that was my final conclusion to this investigation and project.

To be honest with you the Folsom Lake area now blends with the major city of Sacramento. This area use to have Bigfoot sightings and it was unknown frontier when the settlers first arrived here. A story rings a bell about another travesty in regards to the relocation cemetery which is when in 1996 remains found at the old Prairie City Cemetery were discovered then relocated here as well due to the construction of the Prairie City on ramp to Highway 50. Not all the graves were exhumed and every one of them in the relocation cemetery says unknown. In actuality some of the graves today are under highway 50 and the onramp due to the fact that construction crews could not find them all.

Today the relocation cemetery serves as one massive burial ground on a Sunday afternoon you might see a drum circle occurring in the Negro Hill Cemetery. Sadly while most names were lost during relocation some of the graves are in really bad shape. It is obvious being so close to a major city that others are abusing many of the grave sites. These kind of people are already taking a bad situation and making it even worst. So it is our job to make sure this kind of things does not happy so when I document my cases I am extremely thorough because I understand what its like to lose something to time, elements and even the carelessness of other human beings.

The relocation cemetery is about 5 acres in size some of the burial grounds are combined while others are still segregated with wood signs. I read that their are 496 occupants on one website while another one said 474 occupancies with an additional 17 plots that been reserved by family members who are interred here. Either way in theory if all the graves were found the Army Corps Of Engineers would have to erect a second relocation cemetery and that is just not going to happen. I sometimes even wonder if their were already some graves within the relocation cemetery based on my studying of certain tombstones and their weathering pattern.

I will say one thing the work that we do here within The Paranormal & Ghost Society is an emotional roller coaster. One cannot help feeling sadness when they walk the grounds of this graveyard between all the unknowns, forgotten ones who never made it here and the condition of most of the stones I came across. One thing I am 110 percent certain is that the cemetery is haunted whether this occurred because the dearly departed were disturbed or perhaps these pioneers who passed on just want to let you know that they are here even if they are forgotten!
