The Mizell Family Cemetery is hidden within the very well known Harry P. Leu Gardens which is roughly 50 acres of botanical gardens, the Mizell-Leu House, trails, and many other significant sites.

The cemetery has over 30 grave stones some are marked others are not. Most if not all the graves are Mizell family members. Only 11 gravestones have legible information on them of their burials. The cemetery sits surrounded by wrought iron hidden in a patch of forest and is very easy to miss. In the back of the cemetery is the largest cinnamon tree I have ever seen perhaps even the largest in the state of Florida.

The Mizell Family moved to Orlando in the 1850s. A man by the name of David Mizell purchased land on the south shore of Lake Rowena and started a homestead. He served in the military to fight in the third Seminole water and eventually the Civil War. In 1868 he was made Sheriff of Orange County during reconstruction.

He was ambushed and killed by the members of the Barber Family in 1870. Could this be the same family that started Barberville? His family continued to live on the property after his death and in 1888 his son built the first part of the house that still stands there today.

More then Likely David Mizell was the first burial here in 1870. It really is amazing how many tourist visit this site each year passing by this private little place of burial. Today many lush gardens surround this dismal place where the Mizell family still roam.
