More then often as a paranormal adventurer I am always pushing myself to the limits. During my first expedition in the Lassen National Forest I was chasing ghosts and bigfoot. Never no time to rest it was one location after the next and that is the life of a true dedicated researcher. However, on my journeys I also know how to relax and experience some utopia that nature has to offer. Therefore before I would climb Cinder Cone in search of the strange I took a beautiful ride in Mt. Shasta country to the McArthur Burney Falls Memorial State Park. I realize allot of people come up here for the serenity being here made me feel as if I was in New Zealand or took a time machine to some lost world. I thought I would throw our fans and members a treat something chill that they could enjoy the same way I did.

Burney Falls resides between the great Mount Shasta and Lassen Peak both are some of the greatest volcanoes in the world and have a high possibility of erupting in the next century. This state park is located at an elevation of about 3,100' above sea level along the edge of the Cascade Mountain Range. The falls stand at a height of 129' which pour over basalt cliffs and the park is situated on about 910 acres. The 48 degree pool of water below the falls is rather deep reflecting the sky and on a sunny day has a beautiful azure hue as you can see from our websites content. Sometimes the mist and a reflection from the sun can give off a splendid rainbow. I know this because I seen a rainbow as by the time I had arrived here it was gorgeous here almost as if I was in a dream or entered the gates of some natural heaven.  I worked up quite a sweat hiking below and above the falls crossing wooden bridges and chasing butterflies. We have not seen it in the Winter but I heard the cliffs are full of icicles as the waterfall is frozen while in the Fall the pools reflect the amber colored leaves. All spectacular reasons to make a journey here to see natures finest art!

In ancient times their were small bands of Native Americans in the region that lived near these falls and the creek that flows into the nearby Pit River. One band was called the Ilmawi
or pronounced "Uts i mi wa" which today are only one of twelve which are a part of the Pit River Tribe.  The bands were hunters, gatherers, fisherman and performed various sacred rituals at the base of these very falls you see further below on this page. The name Pit derives to the natives hunting methods which were that they dug deep pits to trap game. The natives would trap elk, deer and pronghorn in these pits. They could also hunt for rabbit, ducks, quail, squirrels and perhaps even otter. Trout and Salmon ran through Burney Creek and in the Pit River. The lady here was also very fertile and today it still is as the lush forest blankets the falls. The natives would harvest acorns, grasses, various seeds, mosses and herbs for medicinal use. This is an ancient place ceremonies may have been held at the pool below the falls for centuries to thousands of years! The natives made use of the incense cedar which is abundant in the area to build canoes which then would be used to traverse Burney Creek.

The first explorers who came to this region in the 1820's were fur trappers. This is prior to the gold rush which brought in many European Emigrants who homesteaded not to far from these very falls. This nearly spelled doom to the Ilmawi band and the Pit River Tribe. It was the dawn of a new age these white settlers took there lands built mines, mills and towns. On occasion war did break out warriors on both ends of the battlefield would die much like the Modoc War which took place up near Lava Beds National Monument. Tensions you could say would be high for awhile afterall this waterfall allured men from every kin and perhaps some of them thought that these sacred falls belonged to them. They only belong to one being that was mother earth and they should be valued by the human race as a while. By the time white men encroached on the natives lands much of the tribe had been reduced due to deadly epidemics that they were not immune to.

Now you heard some Native History but let me tell you about these falls pioneer history that came to the area.  A pioneer settler named Samuel Burney settled not to far from these falls in the 1850's and came from South Carolina a long ways from home. I am not sure how he passed away whether he was accidental, natural or purposely caused however records show his death was in 1859 therefore he did not live here very long. Just a short time after Burney's death John and Catherine McArthur arrived in the 1860's sorry do not have an exact date. When they arrived to the area they laid claim on thousands of acres and supposedly opened a general store. Shortly after the settlement of Peck's Bridge rose up along the Pit River near the Burney Falls. The rest is history other families built ranches and farms shortly after. Above the falls an Isaac Ray built a lumber mill above the falls to harness the white rapids which flow above. People did live here according to cemetery records well into the 1900's and supposedly their is a cemetery nearby. I was not aware of this till after my I did my research on the area however if you do visit it you may see some of the names I am mentioning in this article.

It was the descendents however of the McArthur family who sought to save the falls and this majestic place. Let me explain in 1917 the Pacific Gas and Electric Company was newly formed. They were purchasing land and rights to the water in the area. As a matter in fact they wanted to dam up the Pit River which would basically cause no more water to flow over the waterfalls. Then again who knows maybe they would have built the dam right into the Basalt Cliffs either way these falls were in peril at one point in its ancient history. Frank and Scott McArthur who were sons of John and Catherine bought the land surrounding the entire waterfall. I believe it was 160 acres to be exact then they turned around deeded the property to the state of California. They asked in return that the park would be named after their parents who settled on this land. As a matter in fact by 1926 McArthur Burney Falls began California's second state park. Just north of the falls you can hike up to the Pit Dam which is forming what is know as the Lake Britton Reservoir  along the Pit River. I wish we had more time during my journey and exploration to check out other sites however I still had to summit Cinder Cone in Lassen Volcanic National Monument.

If you visit the state park you will see a historical cabin which is in our photo gallery below but also Diablo Stone Ovens built by the Civilian Conservation Corps prior to the second World War. I did not take any photos of the stoves at the time of my first hike through here they were having the grand opening of their new welcome center. It was really nice they had food, music and many of the Native Americans were here celebrating. We had gotten to see an elder play drums and it was a really great experience. Part of what we do here at PGS is we try to get involved in culture and history. I want to be a part of it the best kind of paranormal researcher is one who will not examine these locations but to fully experience them which will help you better understand how sacred some of these locations are that we preserve through this very website!

Do you know what I love more then anything about this area? It is the rich nature which surrounds these falls including Ospreys which nest above the falls then swoop down to catch a trout as they go over. If you hike around there are porcupines, raccoon, gray foxes, deer, ground squirrels, badgers, mountain lion, otters, turtles, tree frogs, black bear, rabbits and over 150 bird species which includes bald eagles. The forest here is very lush but its also rugged full of ponderosa pines, oaks, cedar and Douglas Firs. It is not uncommon to see lizards here I tried to photograph one that was at least 18" long and went under some brush so I know they exist here. Some wildlife here is a little more rare and I think this is an attributed factor that given any day you can have as many as a couple hundred people fishing, hiking and relaxing at the waterfall.  President Theodore Roosevelt felt this place should be one of the eighth wonders of the world. Whether it is or it is not its still in my opinion majestic and a world away from a world in some sense.

As most of you are aware this region of northern California was formed by extreme volcanic activity as well as thousands of years of wind and water erosion. Its easy to hike around and see volcanic peaks everywhere. As a matter in fact from Burney there are locations you can see Mount Lassen and Mount Shasta both two very massive snow covered volcanoes that could still erupt anytime. That is what makes this such a unique location is that the forest found here bordered Lassen National Forest but resides in the Shasta Forest. I consider anything within 50 miles of Shasta to be a part of the volcanoes basin since during various eruptions this region was transformed geologically. As a matter in fact the Burney Falls region was formed over a million years ago and under the entire area is porous basalt which retains rainwater as well as snow melt. Such water seeps out from springs so although the creek barely trickles in the summer the falls continue to roar because of this.

Most of the basalt that covers the state park was formed due to a single flow of lava 200,000 years ago. As a matter in fact the town of Burney was at one time covered with over 40 miles of flow to the north and east. The ledge or lip of basalt that you see behind the waterfall was probably caused by a thick sheet of lava flow which cooled up to 120' in thickness. Over the years the erosion caused by raging waters has physically caused the waterfall to have moved a mile from its original location of course this occured over a million years  just like with how the Grand Canyon was formed. Later on these faults cause fissures and cracks pushing the basalt upward thus creating ledges and cliffs. Which today form this rugged paradise that you see on our journey through the park.  You could say that the park has a similar geology as in comparison to the Modoc Plateau region to the east of here.

Since the basalt is porous and their was volcanic lava flows which started underground today more then likely the entire region is littered with hundreds of miles of lava tubes. You hear stories about Bigfoot, UFOs, Hollow Earth, Advanced Civilizations and Aliens being connected to such place. While people might be birding, hiking or enjoying some fishing at the falls we tend to forget below them might be a lost world. The 100 million gallons of water that pour over the basalt lip are main caused by water being forced through the cracks and fissures within the basalt rocks underground reservoir. Which means such fissures may have opened up hidden caves and that some of the lava tubes may harnessing underground rivers below.

If you pay attention you can see about a third of the way down the falls the older and newer lava lines. This is because the area was under lava and had volcanic eruptions in the area two different times. There supposedly is a rock called diatomite not to far above the falls which is composed of silica skeletons of microscopic algae which produces these creamy white out crops. That is because there once was a lake that existed here over a million years ago therefore it contained the algae necessary to form the diatomite rock you see today. The entire area was millions of years in the making and these falls were not formed overnight either were its underground springs below.

The mist from the falls creates a very lush atmosphere which surrounds the pool and you can feel it just about anywhere as you hike on down it. Their are today at least three types of trout you can fish for in the creek or pool below the falls. Its probably one of the most purest peaceful places on the planet really and people here are really nice. I met a guy who had a scope put on some Ospreys who told me I could look on in it at the nest.  My first taste of Shasta Country was magical in every way and I am just glad that I get to share it with our viewers. When you experience places like these you want to see and learn more. This is only a small taste of things to come as we take on other locations in the area such as Shasta's beautiful lakes, caves, waterfalls and summit.

I did do some extensive research in the area and found an occasional Bigfoot sighting not to far away from the falls. The forest is very dense here also there are lava tubes or natural caves within the basalt everywhere just that most of them remain undiscovered perfect for something cryptid to dwell in elusively. You probably will not see one of these creatures within the state park but surrounding it is all wilderness and many remote locations that really do not get much attention. I mean technically the region resides between Mount Shasta and two other national forest lands which both boast quite a few strange disappearances. Therefore maybe their is some connection between those who vanished and what lurks in the land of the volcanoes here who knows! One thing is for certain the Shasta area has been home to strange lights in the sky, tales of underground civilizations and bigfoot for many centuries! If you have a strange story PGS would love to hear it especially anything that surrounds this natural wonder!
