In the beginning of every single December I unpack all my holiday boxes. In one of those boxes is the Santa Beard and yes it gets its usage for every single adventure during this time of year. I was just happy to bring it out just in time for the cold weather we were having. Trust me hike around in the Santa Getup you will stay warm all day while chasing the paranormal lol.

However for me these trips mean so much more to me considering this is an area that has some of the finest remaining ghost towns in Northern Nevada its well worth opening up a case for them. Its an area we work with time and time again revealing more and more awesome locations with each adventure. In this case Mason along with its Blue Stone Mill Ruins and Rockland Nevada offer so much to those who truly love scenic remote ghost towns.

Its a nice time of year in Nevada most mountains are snow capped but you also do not have to worry about rattlers or sweating to death. Personally I just love loading the jeep up then heading off before sunup which I did when heading off to Mason. Sometimes were out there before the sun comes up and head for home after it goes down. No less its great to bring the beer, bud, food and gear just seeking out the paranormal. I get to spend my day exploring history and at the same time maybe finding something that defies explanation.

This is a very beautiful part of Nevada many mountain ranges and vast open valleys. In the Spring everything is green the winter its rather bare and usually snowy. Life up here was remote but it also was very harsh I mean technically people died near or in these old boom towns. Most of them focused on mining and milling I know these two did. The thing about most ghost towns is that you can also investigate the mills and the mines which I generally find to be most of the time quite haunted. The thing is once you get to these old ghost towns you really have to get out there hike and offroad because they can be scattered.

You can look at it on a map but you have to be physically at these locations to build a case. I try to photograph all the artifacts, structures and remnants of the past. I also film them that way if they cease to exist most of you can enjoy them through our hard work. When I visit ghost towns its hard to believe some of them had thousands of residents considering all that is left. Years of vandals and the elements have taken a toll on such locations which is why I made sure before the end of 2015 to make an adventure of it by visiting old Mason and Rockland.

It was still dark out sun coming up and I knew I had a adventurous day ahead of me. My family they were fast asleep but as I begin to head west I entered the beautiful Singatse mountain range. Where would I go and what would I find? Would I eventually be king of the Singatse range for a day hiking through them to seek out haunted mines and remnants of old Mason?

Old Mason
"Blue Stone Mill"

When you begin to offroad into the range you pass by some of the oldest copper pit mines in the state of Nevada. They are huge open pits now more like lakes but seeing them is also seeing history. Copper Mining in this region of Nevada was a big industry and towns were built around its ore.

This eventually led to a spur known as the Copper Belt Railroad which looped around numerous towns such as Wilson Canyon, Ludwig, Hudson, Thompson Smelter and Nordyke. All ghost towns I worked with in 2014 and 2015. Old Mason was one of the last ones to journey at on that old spur which was removed but the boom towns that once smelted copper still remain today.

When you turn off towards the mountains there are massive canyons, cliffs and dirt roads everywhere. Truthfully this is a four wheeling dream the sun for me just came up I had a high energy mocha so I was having the time of my life. I could see on the side of this massive mountain the remnants of the Blue Stone Mill far off in the distance. It did not matter what road I took afterall there were so many and most of them took you right to the old town site.

When you pull up you can park below the mill now I realize they give tours out here but its expensive and its just better that you come out here yourself if you want to explore. The mill is huge built into it is the old Blue Stone Mine which I believe connected to the Mason Mines. Today most of the mines here are collapsed, sealed up or just difficult to find. The entrance into the Blue Stone mine is big enough to drive a large truck in and next to it are tiers of ruins which also contain a smelter.

I parked my jeep right in front of the mine and next to the mill on a hillside. If some of you pay notice I take allot of photos of the jeep to kind of put the region into perspective such as scenic back drops or the ghost town itself. Its very easy to see the town site below the mill as roads crisscross. That way the miners could work at the mills or mines just above the town site.

When you climb around the ruins to the Blue Stone you can see below the mountain range Yerington, Weed Heights and of course where Mason is today. The Mason of today is in the valley which is full of farms and ranches. But back in the day Mason was more directed at copper mining before it begin to transition into a farming community.  Then again some of them ranches been around since the mid 1800's and probably supplied the miners with meat and livestock.

The mill itself is quite extensive you have be careful on top of it is a mine shaft its fenced off but still its flimsy and if you lean forward there is nothing to grab onto. But It would appear the ore was extracted from the mines on the very hill the mill was built. The mill itself is tiered it has at least five stories of ruins kind of reminds me of this giant temple.

There was allot of graffiti more so areas or rather walls that had buckshot in them. People today come out here to target practice I did to but I did not damage anything. Unfortunately some people just shoot the mill and in the process spray paint whatever they can find. However if you treat this site with respect it will be good to you. There are allot of roads to off road, hidden mines to explore and remnants of the town if your willing to find them.

We found plenty of glass and old nails with the metal detector. You can also see some copper ore around and some rusty remnants from back when the mill was active. There is a section of the mill that looks like a Colosseum with rows of concrete all the way to the top as if its where you would sit watching two gladiators try to defeat one another. In front of the mill are these oddly shaped rocks and dunes the elements here are harsh so wind erosion is real prominent where the ghost town resides.

If you climb around the mill there is allot of foundations to explore you can walk in them or drop down into some of the areas where at one time the wooden mill resided. Today not so much remains but a shell of its former glory no less the mill was a beast and you can explore it for awhile. My kids had fun climbing up the tiers and the views were stellar from anywhere you stood on the mill into the valley below.

If you search around there are TNT boxes and even pipe that protrudes out of the ground surrounding the mill. Besides finding piles of rusty cans back when the miners ate beans not allot remains of the town itself. Not to far from the mill is a old rusty water tank then near that is this small stone building. You can walk inside the old smelter there is actually an area on top you can look down into it because the smelters usually had an open area in the roof for air flow. There are also piles of bricks everywhere from perhaps smoke stacks or other structures.

If you head around the massive mill site you can follow this ridge and rock climb to the top of this peak which had this pole with fabric blowing in the wind. If you do not like heights it will not be for you trust me because there are cliffs built within this peak. However once you get to the top it overlooks the entire Yerington Mining District which was very prevalent in the 1800's in this region when it came to copper mining. Some of the dump and debris piles I seen from the top of the peak looking below were massive. I am guessing that the mines below the Blue Stone and in the district had miles of extensive tunnels. Most of those mine entrances were part of the Mason Mine which also connected to the Blue Stone Mine that way ore could just be carted out for processing.

When you stand up on this peak you begin to realize that directly under you are probably miles of tunnels. Tunnels that miners died and more then likely haunt today. Since I was on top of the peak I did find a way to the bottom through this rugged direct road below the mountain. It takes you through this massive canyon which is lined on each side by dump piles and usually above those piles are entrances into mines. I have a friend I am going to take back here and were going to try to get into the Mason and Blue Stone Mines eventually if we can find an entrance to go in and explore.

After gloating being on the peak I begin to hike back down only on the backside of the Mill. The views here of Mason and Smith Valley are precious. When you climb the peak you can even see the Pine Nut Range. Many of the mountains afar are snow covered and you can see the ripple of the geology for miles. Generally for most investigations of ghost towns or scenic locations I try to ascend to a vista point just to put an area into perspective so others can understand how desolate these locations area. There are no amenities in ghost towns like this you have to bring your own firewood, blankets, food and drinks.

Standing above the old town site allowed me to sort of plat out the town and see the entirety of the mill itself. I also found off in the distance what appeared to be a vault and some other two story building. I definitely would make my way back to the jeep of course we would have our fun before continuing our exploration.

We spent sometime shooting and target practicing not to shabby I hit a small bottle from really far away. We also had a nice little food break I like to bake for our trips so we always have nice things to eat ranging from fruit to pastry. We spent sometime also treasure hunting of course you wont get rich here but you might find a nail or some other proof that a town once existed here. At one time there was saloons, stores, cabins, homes, businesses, banks, depots, mills etc almost all of it gone. What might remain may be in ruins or just a few pieces of wood with rusty nails in it.

My sons played being a dad its important for me to see them get away from technology and be boys. For most teens the mill is a dream come true allot to climb on I know I sat up on the roof of the smelter letting my legs dangle as I enjoyed the valley scenery below and mountains. Do not get me wrong you can get hurt if you act foolish but for the most part this is one of the safer mining towns in northern Nevada compared to some of the other ones we been to. So it was a great area to climb around on take scenic photos and search for the strange.

Speaking of strange the most active area within the mill had an unusual amount of EMF activity. My meter kept going in the red zone near it. This would make sense as the smelter was the meat and potatoes of the mills operation. Copper could be smelted then shipped on the railroad to the main spur where it would reach other parts of the country. Some of the finest copper in the world was smelted at this location and here I was a part of its history.

Also if you explore the mill there is a few rooms you can go into that were very deep. The mill probably had stairwells to some of them along with to higher tiers. Today their are no stairs you just have to climb or enter the rooms to explore them. I took EMF readouts and did EVP sessions at every location I discovered at the mill site. I also investigated the Blue Stone Mine which resides among the mill ruins and is a massive tunnel.

The mine has barbed wire in front of it then their is signs stating that their are cameras. I guess at one time they did what they had to do to keep folks out. When I went into the tunnel about 100' within it you hit this massive dump pile it almost touches the ceiling. If you did not climb up and over it then you would think that the mine no longer progresses onward. This is not the case I climbed over the debris pile then things had gotten very dark you could only see a little light from the outside peering in.

If you continue to make your way down the dump pile there is a little light coming in from this shaft above you. It was not uncommon for the miners to vent the mines for airflow such shaft today though can be found all over ghost towns and yes they are dangerous. I stood in one of the shafts looking up towards the sky and thought wow its right on the other side of the hillside where the mill resides.

Eventually the tunnel begins to narrow but it does dead end. You can tell where the miners ended there drilling and digs. The wall is heavily chiseled as if operations ceased and TNT bombing ceased. You could see where they just did not finish extending the mine. However I believe that the mine did go on however the other tunnel was probably concealed under that dump pile. More then likely a smaller tunnel shot off in another direction where it led to the Mason Mines. Since I had explored the what was left of the Blue Stone Mines I hope to connect the dots eventually exploring the miles of tunnels the Mason Mines offer in 2016 if we can locate them nearby.

The mine was very intriguing like I said the main tunnel was big enough to drive a huge truck into. My kids had gotten to explore this mine because its one of the safest ones you can go in. Its not very long but its not a tunnel that your going to hit your head and there are no shafts that are hundreds of feet deep. Its just a very large tunnel that dead ends at a wall if you do not mind getting dirty to climb over the debris pile of minerals.

Our last stop within Mason would be the vault which is on a hill side above the Blue Stone Mill deeper into the Singatse Range. As a matter in fact their is a massive foundation with the only thing standing next to it was the concrete vault. The door is gone but the vault is entirely in tact and you can enter it. Someone told me they think it might be an old jail I suppose but being that it sat between the Blue Stone Mill and another mill site nearby it was highly unlikely. Generally if gold, silver or copper was processed or smelted it was stored in such vaults until it could be exported.

Just beyond the vault was this giant two story stone building with no windows, missing cargo doors and a few holes in the wall. Based on the wood mounts on the walls and beams I could tell this was some kind of mill. Mason had many mining claims, mills and structures back when the town was operable. I cant say what kind of mill this was afterall Nordyke a few miles away had its own flour mill. But I can say this monolithic structure has some awesome scenic views when you stand in it looking out into the valley and Nevadan wilderness. Next to this massive stone building is a dirt bike tire with a memorial to someone who passed away and loved to offroad back in this area.

That morning I was king of the mountain we were the only ones up here high up in the Singatse Range above the ranching town of Yerington which really has consumed Mason in its later years. When you stand at this ghost town you can see easily for a hundred miles its very scenic. I am not sure what else remains but after taking a few dirt roads on foot and with my jeep all I really found was a few foundations, two mills, vault and some rusty remnants of the past. However no less it completes my ghost town project along the old Copper Belt Railroad.

My morning in Old Mason was splendid spent time hiking, target practicing with the family, treasure hunting, playing with my kids, getting some paranormal work done and taking some awesome photography of the scenery. How can I beat that? People should learn to chill when doing paranormal projects you will find that it will produce better results then to expect immediate paranormal occurrences.

All in all to finally reach this place which had been on my mind for a few years was a really bitter sweet victory. I drank an ice cold Samuel Adams and celebrated taking this road out of the ghost town that was fun as hell. Why was it fun? It almost went straight down the kind of road that makes your stomach turn but you know you want to take it because that is what jeeps are for and offroading is about! So I took the road less taken out of here back into the valley leaving the mill to my back. I cant wait to return to here and hike up around the old mining district.

Perhaps on our next expedition we will find a way underground into the Mason Mines and who knows what we might document. If the mill had some EMF activity above ground I wonder what secrets remain below! The weather was warming up you could wear a T-shirt as it was hitting 70 degrees making it even a nicer day then I ever had perceived! We were heading to the south into the Bridgeport Wilderness to a remote ghost town known as Rockland which focused more on Gold and Silver then it did like such as Copper mined at the Blue Stone Mill.

Just a few miles away from the ghost town of Mason I photographed this strange phenomena in the sky the real question is what is it and how would something like this occur naturally? Or is it even caused by natural phenomena to begin with? Its just a single strand or stream of smoke perhaps a cloud. But I have never seen smoke or even a cloud like this therefore we can category this as something strange especially as random as it is considering how clear the dawn sky is at the time. What could have caused such a pattern in the middle of the sky. Its hard to know for sure how this was formed or even why! I mean was it caused by a craft? UFO? We may never know!
EMF Gauss was particularly high surrounding the old Bluestone Mill I know most folks will attribute it to the metal detector but this detector takes a 9 volt battery and my EMF detector never picks it up. I know this because I been using it around the detector for months and we never get readings besides the fact its off because you cant metal detect concrete. The fact remains that tunnels all run under the mill due to the Bluestone Mine and well besides them being deadly or dangerous so were the mills built above them during Nevada's mining boom days. This energy were capturing could be in a relation to the dearly departed even when I held my meter steady it would spike sometimes reading a 4 then randomly spike to 7 or even an 8 which is extremely high. Generally the only time you get spikes that large are if your near an extreme power source such as a car engine being started, under a transformer or power line or near a microwave or fridge but out in the desert atop of the ruins of an old mill that has no power sources definitely gives me hope that the mill may actually be haunted especially if you combine that with a few EVP's we captured.

We found this nice dirt bike memorial of a middle aged man who more then likely suffered a tragedy riding up here in the hills surrounding this ghost town. Allot of people love to ride out by the Bluestone Mill Ruins and Mason because the old mining roads are great for all terrain vehicles. I seen dirt bikes, atv's and others four wheeling out here. But not without a cost doing this kind of thing may be fun but it does not come without cost it is dangerous. Their are allot of rocks, cliffs and harsh terrain therefore accidents can happen. This memorial reminds me of how important it is to be cautious when we are exploring places like this because some simply are just not as lucky when they adventure back in the hills of the Singatse Range. This is a lovely memorial RIP!
