In ancient times it was the Washoe, Miwok and Maidu who inhabited the Crystal Basin. An area full of lakes, streams, ponds, rivers and lush evergreen forest. Which was formed from extreme volcanic and glacial activity. As a matter in fact when you enter the heart of the Crystal Basin you will feel as if you stepped into a lost world as very little has changed in thousands of years here.  Loon Lake is one of the largest of the reservoirs/lakes in the region but it also resides in the heart of this remote paradise overshadowed by Devil's Peak which can be seen from just about anywhere from its shores.

When the Europeans came to the region they referred to the basin as Devils Valley. In theory Devil's Peak's name probably derived from the name of the valley or came to be based on the fact that at one time this was a very molten hot volcano which spewed lava and rocks for many miles. Today these volcanoes are extinct but seem to be found all over the basin and surrounding the Loon Lake area. The volcanoes formed the geology in the region but it was the glaciers that carved out the canyons and the basin which left behind over 130 pristine lakes which today make up the Desolation Wilderness and a portion of the Eldorado National Forest.

In the mid 1800's many ranchers came to the area to establish cattle ranches. The cattle were brought here to graze while others may have raised sheep. The cattle industry was important in the 1800's as it would provide the miners of the gold rush with beef as well as dairy. The sierras are lush with water, green meadows and plenty of open areas to raise heads of cattle. Many of the large open expanses where cattle once grazed were eventually bought up by the city of Sacramento then turned into reservoirs where hydroelectric power plants could be built. Many of the creeks were dammed off to harness the power to generate electricity for many of the small towns and city in the valley below. Gerle Creek was one of the streams which would be utilized in the Loon Lake Dam Project. Today some of the higher elevated meadows still are home to some cattle ranching just as in the 1800's however most of them were flooded to create the reservoirs you see today.

Loon Lake was not always known as Loon Lake though as a matter in fact in the 1800's it was called Horseshoe Lake. Other names area Lake Bisbee, Pleasant, Bixley and Bigsby Lake according to historical documents from other ranchers who came to the area. Bisbee became part of Loon Lake in 1862 when it was expanded with two dams used to generate power by impounding the waters of Gerle Creek. The lake actually use to be allot smaller and ranchers brought there cattle here to graze. As what was once a wide open meadow today is now a very large rocky lake shore. If you carefully meander although the NW short you will find the Buck-Loon Tunnel which is over a mile long. The waters from the Buck Island Reservoir which is fed by the Rubicon River get released into Loon Lake via this tunnel which is over a mile in length. If you decide you want to traverse the tunnel please know its very dangerous especially if they release the water through it you could end up drowning or getting hurt just stating the obvious. Some folks call the cove or NW area Pleasant Lake. Today this body of water encompasses about 76,000 acres and is the gateway leading onto the Rubicon Historic Trail.

The Rubicon Trail historically runs from Georgetown Ca to Tahoma Ca at Lake Tahoe. For hundreds of years it was an Indian trade route as the Washoe, Maidu and Miwoks used it to trade with one another in the region. Physically this route also cuts through the heart of the Crystal Basin and Desolation Wilderness. If you were to continue to traverse this route you could reach Lake Tahoe which in the summer months was used by the natives for fishing and hunting. During the gold rush it was used as a Stagecoach Route and eventually became one of the most notable jeeping trails in the world. The first vehicle that ever took this trail was in 1908 and when the jeep came to be offroad adventurers began heavily using it since the 1950's just after WWII. You can hike on this trail via foot or jeep it your choice. But know that without the proper suspension, lift, tires etc you could get stuck or even hurt because this road is full of boulders, rock faces, granite slabs etc etc. Many people from all over the world come to camp at Loon Lake then take their jeeps out onto the trail. My first expedition out here I waved to over 100 jeepers as at times there can be as many as a dozen of jeeps following one another on the trail. However the trail passes many notable peaks, lakes and back country historic sites. Many people soup up their vehicles for the sole purpose of conquering this trail while others have died on it while adventuring. They have each year jeep races on the trail it can get a bit extreme!

While the Rubicon Trail passes below Devil's Peak it also meanders along many various lakes you can see from on top of it. Lakes like Spider, Buck Island, Fawn and Rockbound Lake are all wonders of ones hard work well earned if your daring enough to hit the Rubicon Trail. Of course if your really up for the adventure in my opinion its better to backpack it that way you can go to places that your jeep cannot go. Therefore you can hike the Rubicon Trail on the eastern side of Loon Lake which will take you to many other lakes in the Desolation Wilderness. If you decide you want to follow the Rubicon on foot from Loon Lake or its Western Shoreline you can reach Devil's Peak to the north. Their are parts of the Rubicon where you can only access it on foot like the Rubicon In Lake Tahoe's DL Bliss State Park. No matter how you decide to take on the Rubicon your going to enjoy some of the most beautiful back country of California.

Most of the peaks in the region have no accessible trails you just make your own which is why I love the Crystal Basin so much. Its very primitive no matter where you go the roads only take you so far the rest is all up to you on where you will go and what you will see. This is why its just a bigfoot hotspot area because their are places in this basin no man has ever explored or seen with their very eyes. With over 130 lakes and multiple other water sources it is definitely a rock ape paradise here. Besides the fact that wherever their is a large abundance of water your going to find Bigfoot like creatures which the Washoe tribe was very well aware of when they inhabited these lands. Just knowing that this creature has been sighted for many centuries here is enough to want to explore more being a cryptozoologist. Truly the adventure begins when the pavement ends and that really is what this area signifies. Their are no amentities its all very primitive and even today despite the fact that so many journey here to adventure the strange is never to be ignored! So much has yet to be discovered when you think of a area like this who knows what someday may be found but just the thought of being here journeying is exciting!

Loon Lake is not the only region of the Crystal Basin more or less most folks are drawn to the Union and Ice House Reservoir area perhaps because its more accessible. Then you have other places you can visit such as Big Hill which is a vista point that overshadows all of the Crystal Basin and on a clear day you can see the city of Sacramento. Then their is Robbs Hut which has a very old fire tire which are not uncommon in the sierras. The fire towers were used to keep an eye out for fires in the Crystal Basin and more then often can be found on various peaks. You could spend many lifetimes exploring the region the basin holds many historically significant sites as well as scenic gems. The Crystal Range which keep in mind splits the
Desolation Wilderness into two regions boast 900 square miles of massive peaks. Massive Mountains such Pyramid, Dicks, Price and Agassiz Peaks form this range.  Where your hiking to the west from Tahoe or eastbound from Loon Lake your going to see these massive peaks which almost tower 10k in elevation.

Given the massive size of the area it is one of the more notable bigfoot hotspots in the Sierra Nevada's. Time and time again I read cases about strange vocalizations. I also have read some reports that some of the forestry who works up in the basin has only reconfirmed what we already knew which is that Bigfoot can be found in this basin. Personally I had my own encounter in this wilderness back in 2011 when something took down a deer then responded to my call eventually following me for almost two miles down a dark trail at night. It was getting very territorial with me and eventually it ran after me. The entire ground shook this thing had to be well over a 1000lbs and I could hear it breathing real heavy next to me but could never see it. As I said earlier their is plenty of places man has not explored within this vast wilderness. Therefore anything cryptid could remain elusive without being seen hiding in the lush forest or between many of the rocks which were jostled by glacier activity. Their are thousands of crevices, rock shelters, dens and caves also in the area. Therefore anything could be hiding in such places and that is where people like us come in hoping to discover such sites of interest. I have found tracks in the region and heard vocalizations that are not of any animal. I believe if you are looking for Bigfoot that the smaller lakes surrounding Loon Lake are good places to start based on the cases I have read. I also did some research and found out some people have vanished from the basin without a trace. Perhaps suicide? someone getting lost? Falling down a rocky crevice? Maybe UFOs or Bigfoot related? Nobody knows the fact remains this is an area that offers adventure but with adventure also comes great risk~

Not to mention that during my first trek up to the top of Devil's Peak I encountered a very large shaggy long haired brown bipedal creature. It was standing in a small patch of foliage surrounded by trees where the sun pierced the forest floor. I believe it was eating the vegetation as the plant life here was not found anywhere else on this trip. I think when it seen me entering the small patch of woods before you reach the summit that it booked because within a couple seconds it lumbered off behind a tree and I never seen it again. Since most of the area is decomposed granite the creature can walk quite freely without really leaving any tracks behind as it collapses in on itself. Just as it can climb the rocks above the lakes on these peaks where really no man can go leaving no trace behind. I believe that these creatures may live in many of the small dens and caves found on the peaks surrounding the basin. I also believe they come down for water perhaps at night and this is when most people hear these vocalizations. I hope to one day film such creatures I have come close to many times but I know they are real and I have seen them. Therefore the Crystal Basin and the Loon Lake area are prime real estate to search for these creatures. As a matter in fact when I was hiking along the shore of Loon Lake we experienced for about 20 minutes a Rotten Egg stench coming from the tree line along the lake so their is definitely something strange happening here. Not just here but many other wilderness areas and national forest which also surround this area that I have done research at.

Being an avid outdoorsman I do not just visit such places in hopes to find Bigfoot but it is always one of my goals. I love nature and this place is full of it! Their are over two hundred types of bird species, variety of frogs/toads, dozens of butterfly species, deer, black bear, marmots and so much more. Its very well preserved here despite how busy it gets in the summer their is many areas that are untouched by man. In the later 1800's the area was set aside as a forest reserve managed by the General Land Office then later the US Forest Service. In 1931 it was set aside to be used as the Desolation Valley Primitive area which contained about 64,000 acres. When the Wilderness Act of 1964 came to be it was renamed the Desolation Wilderness by 1869. Today the area is federally protected within the ElDorado National Forest and Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unity. The crest of the Sierra Nevada runs right through here just west of Lake Tahoe. In reality this wilderness only makes up for a small portion of the monolithic 1 million acres of the ElDorado National Forest which is home to almost more Bigfoot sightings then just about anywhere in the world!

Their is no doubt in my mind that ghost do not haunt these ancient lands. Over the years allot of people have died in these lakes or from outdoor accidents such as on the Rubicon Trail. Although it does not happen often it does happen time to time. Being on the edge of the Sierra Triangle this region is a Mecca for strange happenings such as UFOs, Ghosts and Bigfoot. When I was hiking along Loon Lake I seen my sons Doppelganger or a ghosts trying to look like him. It led me into this narrow ravine/wash and I followed it a few hundred feet till I blinked and it was gone. I was all alone in the woods spooked out of my mind because I thought my son was playing hide n seek with me. I was worried calling for him and he was not responded so I ran out of the wash met up with my family and there he was. This is what I mean by strange happenings that occur here I have no explanation for this or if something was trying to lure me into getting lost. If that is not strange enough during our first expedition we witnessed what looked like a portal opening up in a cloud which left behind this spinal like trail on both sides of it yet no plane or object was even present.

The original name Devil's Valley alone is a bit strange if you were not aware of the regions ancient volcanic history. Most of the peaks and geological landmarks bare names that refer the Devil or an inferno. At one time this land was hell on earth today its more like a lost world. When you journey in the forest you almost feel that anytime a dinosaur is going to come crashing through the trees. Although dinosaurs are no longer walking this planet if your into nature like me you can find a few lizards on rocks that are a couple feet long. The basin has many different types geological wonders such as deep canyons, cliffs that go for hundreds of feet, crevices, marsh land, ponds, third to fourth generation trees, meadows, lush forest which in certain areas is more jungle like and rock formations everywhere. Before all of this came to be lava flowed here and volcanoes through ash as well as rock thousands of feet into the air. Eventually life took hold of the region and this is what you get so it truly is a gem one that in my opinion should be a national park!

What your going to see while sifting through our Loon Lake & Devils Peak pages is a birds eye view of the region. Although Loon Lake is only a small part of this vast wilderness but yet you could spend an entire lifetime here and still not see it all. So much more remains to be seen and without 130 other great lakes waiting to be seen we look forward to a long future of enjoying all the Crystal Basin has to offer us. More or less this is an introduction to the area which covers all of Loon Lake and many other beautiful lakes that surround it. Along with Devil's Peak which is one of the most dominant geological summits found near the lake besides Guide Peak which looks like a pointy witches hat. We want to give our viewers the full experience one filled with nature, scenery, history, lore, strangeness and good times. We hope to get others off their couches and give them something they can explore. We also want others to learn just like with any of the locations we put on our website and do research at. By us sharing our work with others it will allow others to come forth with their strange stories about Loon Lake area and perhaps we can start putting together a much more in depth case. No matter what you believe or have or have not experienced here something strange is happening and has been for hundreds of years. Whether that is attributed to Dopplegangers, UFOs with little green men or a tribe of Primate like bigfoot creatures the paranormal is well alive in the Crystal Basin and will continue to thrive until we can put the truth to rest!

Please Note: This is a map of the Crystal Basin every BLUE STAR signifies a location we either did research at or visited in relation to the additions you see on these pages. As you can see we focused most of our attention around the Loon Lake area. In the future other projects may be done in other regions of the Desolation Wilderness and the Crystal Basin. We hope by posting the map it will also help others follow the treks we made and help them better understand the region a little more visually of how much ground we covered on this expedition. In total our first expedition covered about 24 miles on foot of hiking and climbing we cannot wait to work with other regions besides Loon Lake in the future!
