Long Cemetery may just be one of the best historical highlights of the Yearling Trail. To get to this cemetery its quite a hike back perhaps a couple miles deep in the woods. The Long family is mainly buried here along with the Baxter family but nonetheless they are all related.

Back in the 1800s the Yearling Trail area was a small community and there are children of the Baxter family buried here which are mentioned in the book called The Yearling.  Ma Baxter loss several children while battling out the wilderness here some which are buried here. Life was very hard living in this neck of the woods. I do feel here are more burials here then graves but currently about 10 gravestones are visible within the cemetery.

The cemetery shows its age as the wooden gate barely opens, the slats in the fence are rotting or missing, and many stones are in weathered condition. Last years hurricane did cause some damage when a tree fell in the middle of the cemetery.

This was quite a feat for us the first time we tried to find this place we got lost so our second time we did locate it and we celebrated with a nice ice cold miller. We work so hard on our investigations and this cemetery is a symbolism of that hard work.

There is a presence that haunts the cemetery more like a guardian. Its an odd place I mean it sits in the middle of the woods surrounded by trees and is very secluded and away from the Yearling Trail. These early pioneers that are buried here were mentioned in the Movie The Yearling If you want to read about the Yearling trail click the link to the right.  Click Here: The Yearling Trail
