Leesburg station was erected around 1887 and was closed after it had a fire in 1969 since then it seems to have been neglected and abandoned. The black and white photos you see were taken in 1951 by an H.H. Harwood when the depot was still in operation.  When the railroad depot was built the Richmond  & Danville Railroad controlled the W&OD which was a huge railroad line running into Ohio, Virginia, Washington etc north of Florida.

The station had two other sister stations that looked exactly alike in the towns of East Falls Church, Clifton, and Gainesville Virginia. I also do believe that the depot was used both for passengers and cargo over the years based on the non smoking area inside the depot and of course the big cargo doors for loading. If you look at the black and white photos you will see that it was made out of wood. There are signs that the wood eventually was replace or covered with a brick shell as you can tell from our outside photos.

Today the tracks which ran past this little depot no longer exist and it appears that the building was restored after the fire. The  reason I say this is that a homeless man we encountered told me he had been residing in the station for at least 3 to 4 years before that I believe the building served some other use. The fireplaces and certain areas appear to be in very good shape like the green trim, red fireplace, flooring etc.

He told me very soon the town has plans to renovate the building and he will have nowhere to go. Nonetheless he would not tell me if he has experienced anything strange while living in the dark at this historic depot. He also seemed to be quite an odd ball with freshly ironed dress shirts hanging on clothes hangars, boxes of books, and many other odd belongings yet the one thing he did not have is a lamp, flashlight, or even something as simple as a candle burning. To live in such an old dark place so long would have some effect over you eventually no doubt.

The train depot is a wonderful historical structure it has five to six rooms and there is no way upstairs unfortunately. The entire structure is made out of solid red brick. Is it haunted well nobody knows well perhaps the mystery man we met inside these walls which in my opinion may not have been of the living either!
