Nowhere within the sierras lays a hidden beauty such as Kyburz Flat which seems to be one of the best kept secrets just north of Truckee California. The flat offers others so much more then just hiking or nature but also ancient history and tales of the wild west along with the early pioneers who braved it.  Honestly as most of you are aware I spend allot of my current days exploring the high sierras always trying to find the best kept secrets and all they have to offer. I spent allot of 2015 in the Kyburz Flat area that includes locations such as Sierraville, Independence Lake, Boca and Sagehen Meadows Stampede Reservoir.  Its an area that is pristine full of wildlife such as exotic birds. During my first visit here I came face to face with brown bear, mountain lions, coyotes, deer and quite a variety of humming birds.

The Kyburz Flat area is divided into three interprestive historic sites which range in time eras and diversity. The first area is the Washoe Petroglyph Site, second being More's Station and the third the Wheeler Pioneer Sheep Camp.  All of them are within a short distance hike from one another if you feel inclined to explore this rich heritage site. Everyone tends to think of the high sierras as a place very snowy in the winter what so few very understand is that these mountains were home to the natives for thousands of years and when the early pioneers came through here they conquered this vast frontier.  One can imagine how much more hostile it would have been here hundreds of years ago before lumber and sheep camps came to be.

The Petroglyph site resides in the woods surrounding the flat if you explore them enough you will find many rocks with cupules. Cupules are made with repeated grounding of a smoother smaller rock that consistently is churning. I believe it took sometimes years to create such large cupules often seen in some of the rocks here. I never seen this as a petroglyph site while exploring it but rather an area possibly the early natives used to grind some of there berries or nuts at. I call them grinding rocks and at one time its very possible a very large village resided within the flat. The reason I say this is you have nearby the accessibility of multiple creeks, little Truckee River and wetlands nearby which drew in various animals that the Washoe tribe hunted during the warmer months.

I read that the petroglyph site found at Kyburz may have been used for weather control, fertility rituals and a place of special offerings to the spirits. Its a very sacred site and not allot of folks know about it. But being a history buff and working in this area for awhile we want to make sure to include the history to the regions earliest settlers that being the Washoe tribe. The cupules found at this site were probably linked to various ceremonies. Unfortunately the most major petroglyph covered rock is split into three sections. Such petroglyph sites found in the Tahoe National Forest or at least this region of it are said to date back to nearly 2000 years ago.

Across from the petroglyph site just a few hundred feet away is the More's Station site. Today one can walk around it via board walk so yes its wheelchair accessible. I think history deserves to be enjoyed by everyone whether its in person or on our site by viewing the More's Station site one could get an idea how important such sites were during the western American Gold Rush. Back in the 1850's during the rush many new mines and boom towns were being built throughout the sierra mountains. Many wealthy men built stage and freight routes some of the earliest roads found in the wild west one of them being the Henness Pass Road. Mining Camps situated between the north and middle Yuba Rivers could use it to travel to various towns. Along the way since the trek was very difficult you had stage stations where pioneers could water there horses and bunk up for the night kind of like today's hotels.

Such wagon roads were very harsh they were not paved you had big rocks in the middle of them and steep drop offs at times. It would have been hell to travel on such roads back in the day. However in 1859 when Virginia City Nevada was starting to boom due to the major silver strikes in the Comstock Lode the pass would be improved. This was done in hopes to attract new travelers and immigrants to different regions of northern California. One could get off the boat in San Francisco travel to Sacramento then eventually make there way over the high sierras into Nevada and up to Virginia City which today is still one of the most preserved semi ghost towns I frequent often! Many transportation and freight companies built these station so that the pioneers could have a means of travel. These roads were used by wagons and horses it was extremely tedious work to get them through the sierras the stations were that light at the end of a long tunnel for the early travelers who used them.

Sometimes when way stations were built it was arranged with a local rancher to provide services to those who traveled on such roads and assist with the freight. The More's had a 320 acre ranch along the Henness Pass Road therefore they ran the station you will see on our website. The station could offer so much more to the pioneers along this road such as a hot meal and place to sleep. You have to understand that the sierras even in the warmer months can get very chilly at night and on occasion you do get summer snow trust me its rare but it does happen. The Lysander More and his family operated this station since they already had a ranch along this wagon road. The station had a barn, corral, fresh water well, root cellar for keeping meat fresh and a large hotel. The hotel had a kitchen and a dining room downstairs while the upstairs boasted small bedrooms. Today the station is long gone but one can see some of the stone foundations left behind and the large meadow surrounding it which once was part of this ranch.

My final destination resides a little further due north of the Flat called the Wheeler Sheep Camp. Not much remains today but remnants of an older spring or watering hole, few old fence post, claw tubs, wood pylons, brick oven for cooking bread and stews. However at one time this camp had a bath house, chicken coop, barn, corrals, spring box, tables, saddle shed and even a cabin. The Wheeler Sheep Camp served as one of the main ranches for the Wheeler Sheep Company based out of Reno. Shepherding more then often was done in the high sierras during the summer months this is because the mountains have lush meadows. I have been to various sheep ranches in the sierras and I have to say every single one I been to is like a page out of some Little House On The Prairie episode! This camp that you see on our pages was operated by John Martin Gallues who was an immigrant from Spain. Gallues and his brother Felix were the men who built most of the structures on the ranch which today are long gone but at some point in time they stood winter after winter strong awaiting a summer filled with wild flowers, birds and sheep grazing its meadows.

The brick oven was built around 1927 as many Basque sheep herders baked stews and breads which was a commodity for the herders. Fresh bread was made daily in these ovens especially for the herders who spent most of there days at night sleeping in a tent or under a night sky.  There is allot of history here as children also lived on site and even extended family. The people who operated this ranch called this place home for at least 6 months out of the year. Your mom may have been baking bread while the kids were running in the meadow and papa may have been doing some work around the ranch. Life was simple here this is one of the reason I enjoy this area so much. Its so offbeat not near any cities or major road but rather a place that resides nestled in the national forest with snowy peaks off in the distance. At one time the bustling wagon road had many pioneers pass through the ranches property. Sadly the road and the ranch begin to taper down in 1869 when the transcontinental railroad came into play.

The oven that you see on our page nearly fell to a state of disrepair after its shed collapsed during a wind storm in the 1980's however in 1992 it would be restored by a Dr. Jose Mallea from UNR along with other volunteers including the Tahoe National Forest. Today you can still make stews or breads in it if you wanted to reserve it for an event.  How awesome is that? You could eat fresh bread from a historic brick oven and where for a couple generations these families embraced this hidden jewel. During my exploration here I was the only human in miles I spent two hours at the sheep camp picnicking, hiking in the meadow and bird watching. I am not sure I ever felt as home as I did here the place is welcoming but its also very possible the dearly departed enjoyed the ranch so much they never left!

I decided to add some adventure into this expedition with one of the most prominent peaks that overshadows the Kyburz Flat area. My take on things is yes more then often you can see what these sites look like or you can really take in the view of the entire region from above. Sardine Peak stands at over 8k and has some very amazing views of The Stampede Reservoir, Tahoe National Forest, Sierra Buttes, Sacramento Valley and even Lassen Peak. You can chose to hike it or offroad it to the top. Personally I like to do both but at times its allot of fun to offroad along the cliffs and just enjoy the ride. Once you make it to the top you can see Crystal and Babbitt Peaks but also you can take in the entire Kyburz Flat area. Up above one can see where the sheep and cattle once grazed as it puts the area into perspective so please when reading this prologue also look at the photos of the ranch land or vast open meadows taken from atop of the summit.

At the top of Sardine Peak is a small white structure which is a white tower constructed in 1935 by the CCC in the Tahoe National Forest. The original structure was just a 4-A Cab on an enclosed wood tower built in 1915. The structure you see today or one built two years later was a 14 x 14 C-3 Cab on an enclosed 17' tower. Such fire towers back in the day were vital as the forestry could reside up here for months and watch the various ridge lines for any impending disasters. These fire towers were vital in protecting the towns that often were built in these lush valleys in the range and protecting the ranch lands below. Today the fire tower can be rented out to the public if they wish to stay the night to take in the beauty of the area. But at one time for many years the tower was abandoned and in a state of disrepair!

The area offers allot the petroglyphs are hidden all over the woods and the area is lush which could be the reason why Bigfoot has been sighted up in this region. Its also possible that life from other worlds visits here as we photographed a strange unidentified object hovering over the flat. When you stand on top of Sardine Peak the world begins to feel much larger around you. One can see a 100 miles on a clear day and see nothing but an eternal wilderness slowly fading off in the distance. Not much would have changed the view is still the same even thousands of years later only difference is that we get to share it now with all of you across the world. I guess my point would be is that this is a vast frontier and anything could be hidden within it. There are places surrounding the Flat no man has ever stood on so creatures like Bigfoot or green men from Mars are open to debate! One must ask why over the years there are more Bigfoot sightings and sometimes even UFOs more then anywhere in the continental United States.

My trip was nothing but pleasant although I did come face to face with a monstrous brown bear but that is because I tried to get out to film this creature in its natural habitat and if you sift through our films you can see him moving through brush away from me. Unfortunately my camera did not come back from the shop right and I could not film my encounter. But I can talk about my experience so others can be ill advised to carry bear mace just in case you encounter a 600lb bear just as I did. The bears are found surrounding this lush flat and they do lumber around in broad daylight as I found out eye to eye. No less I would not trade that for the world nature has reclaimed the flat but at one time it was home to the ancient natives who inhabited the land and the early pioneers who made the west what it was! Today if you sit down for awhile quietly you can observe coyote crossing the vast expanse and see butterflies in the meadow. If you have a really good eye you can catch quite a few humming bird species fluttering over the brick oven or a chipmunk sitting on a log. The area has some of the best wildlife viewing out of any location I been in the Sierra Nevada's and that alone makes it a wonderful addition to our website! Sit back and enjoy the view as it is above as it is below join the journey this is Lord Rick these are my journeys this is history!
