We would leave Silver State Valley from a gold mining hamlet known as Daveytown where we would begin our ascent into Jumbo Canyon which is located in the heart of the Slumbering Hills. The journey would take through a muddy washed out canyon eventually to the top of the mountains overlooking the beautiful Santa Rosa mountains, massive valleys and Oregon from afar. Will take you past the Alabama Mine and up to a crest where the gold mining town of Jumbo is located. Mining begin in the area in 1910 in this remote wilderness where you will get to see even a herd of antelope running across the many mining roads that snake everywhere throughout the slumbering hills. It begins to rain perhaps even snow flurry a little a storm is coming. Eventually as I come from over a hill you will see Jumbo off in the distance and its creepy old wooden cabins just awaiting there next visitor. Not allot is known about Jumbo but this definitely is a remote desolate journey that will take you right to its front doorstep.

Mining begin here around 1910 but truly Jumbo did not grow into the town it became till around 1935 when the Jumbo Mine came to be. President Herbert Hoover visited this camp around 1937 and referred to it as a very impressing mining town. Mining actually continued up until the 1980's over the years time and time again a man by the name of George Austin leased the mine to multiple investors. Most investors were tired of the high cost, litigation and broke the lease. With that being said you had booms in 1941, 1947 and 1951. Jumbo also had a 30 ton amalgamation mill, dance hall, saloon, quite a few claims, glory hole and multiple residences. Today not much remains of Jumbo but the views are stellar and their are plenty of remnants of the past to see including the cabins where the miners lived and even the admin building where they stored their boots and hard hats. The set of snow-capped peaks is the Santa Rosa Range sorry I said Santa Clara a few times by accident this place excited me. While not much remains ill take our viewers throughout the mine, mill and cabin sites of this haunted gold mining town which in its hey day was quite the marvel before it went bust.

We had spent nearly an hour in Jumbo but it begin to rain we had a long journey as we would have to descend through Jumbo Canyon again but find a shorter route on in then descend into the storm. The storms that often hit the Slumbering Hills are brutal which is probably why miners did not stay up here for to long because water, food and supplies was scarce. Then when you throw in weather into the mix like this its simply miserable. Were heading east you can see the Santa Rosa Mountains of Nevada off in the distance covered in snow as we make our way back into Silver State Valley the same valley we explored Daveytown in earlier that morning. I want our viewers to see the trek the miners would have to take if they had to do a supply run its important and that goes both ways up into the canyon as well as descending through it. It definitely was not an easy feat very isolated and in my case I had a storm I had to beat before the snow started coming on in because you definitely do not want to be stranded here. So sit back enjoy the ride along the cliffs and views because I am going to take you on a journey into the frontier.
