Subject: Our Exploration and Investigation of Johnsville California On 5 - 21 -16
Date: 5/24/2016 3:02:38 PM Pacific Standard Time
From: LordOfThyNight@aol.com
To: ParanormalBuffalo@yahoogroups.comParanormalGhostSociety@googlegroups.com,

We had just finished up exploring the Western Pacific Railroad Museum and the weather was not looking so great. In the distance you can see Eureka Peak its a beast even in May it is covered in snow. Their was some dark snow clouds on some of the local peaks and we only had about 15 miles to go till we had gotten to Johnsville. I had really no idea that Johnsville was a semi ghost town. I figured all I would see was the cemetery which I thought was a great find since it contained many of the miners who once operated the Plumas Eureka Mine.

On my way into town I found a series of old miner cabins no windows or doors but still a find like this really made me appreciate the area more because I begin to realize that these were remnants of a once booming gold rush era town. I also found a series of stone ruins to most were on private property but it gave me a feel for the area. I pulled up along Jamison Creek to a boarded up mill of some kind next to the tributary also and noticed it was snowing at the top of the buttes as evergreens had a light dusting on them.

I had big plans to also go up to Eureka Lake and explore the Mohawk Mill along with remnants of Jamison City and the mining camp known as Eureka Plumas which really was just another part of the Johnsville District. At the time I did not know this but within a couple miles Jamison City, Johnsville and The Eureka Plumas Mine Camp all had connections to one another. This was a happening little area nestled deep in the high sierras.

When I pulled into town not one single vehicle not one single soul it was quiet. I pulled up in front of the historical society which was the old town church. Next to it was the cemetery maybe a lot of about two acres or so it was not very big but it was surrounded by the national forest and while walking around there was some nice views of a snow covered peak here. With it being spring flowers were starting to bloom also and birds were out but it still felt a bit chilly for a May day.

Their were many open areas within the cemetery which signifies to me that many of the graves are unmarked. I was not happy with the condition of the cemetery yeah the elements are harsh here I get it but what I do not get is the smashed stones that are crumbling or broke in dozens of pieces. Its obvious people come up here to vandalize. Many of the graves are in Serbian most are miners or the towns first residents. Their was many poor mans graves and a giant cairn with a large wood cross in the middle. I also seen a tree stump used as a grave site and roughly two wrought iron enclosures.

I did not see or notice anything out of the ordinary here took some readings and EVP's. I did actually get some good EMF Gauss readings unfortunately the video footage from this exploration came up missing and lost which is okay because probably in Dec of 2018 will go back and ill film another documentary of the cemetery and town site.

Downtown is dead they have a restaurant its all wood very old called The Iron Door but they were closed. Their was what appeared to be a old inn or hotel and a few old wooden buildings all boarded up. Their is also the old firehouse the bell still remains today and what appears to be a carriage house. I seen a few old cottages and houses. On a positive note while most of the town has been erased from history their still is quite a few historic sites including the old church which was renovated to be the towns historical society.

Just down the road is a small ranch with horses grazing and many of the homes from the later 1800's still stand fully restored now residences. It appears to me their is only one road through town and that is Main Street so many of the houses and historical sites line downtown while others sit further back in the woods.

I did not stay long to be honest I still had to explore the Mohawk Mill, Eureka Mine Camp and a historic cemetery on the railroad tracks in the next town over. Plus I had to offroad up to Eureka Lake its very rugged so that would take up time too but its a beautiful lake just above Johsnville and if you have time check it out its a scenic little gem.The sun was trying to come out on and off but we had snow clouds I think when I was in the cemetery I had a few snowflakes melt on my face.

Its hard to know everything that is here there is some structures with signs pointing to what they were or are. Most of the sites I want to see are on private property meaning that these peoples homes also have historic sites on their land. I seen at least five or six abandoned buildings one of them was massive it even had an attic was a big ole house. I will walk around it and explore it more later.

I had no idea what a gem this place was so I promised to go home do more research so that I could return perhaps explore some of the abandoned homesteads and get a brew at the Iron Door. I heard their is a ghost that haunts it and if you go to the restaurant have a beer some of the locals have some good ghostly tales.

This is a pretty town white picket fences, beautiful trees everywhere, snowcapped peaks, historical remnants etc so I will return because I only had gotten to see some of the town. I wish I could have stayed longer but I wanted to at least take some photos for our site and build off of that. So many think of ghost towns in the desert but people forget that many ghost towns from the gold rush era resided high up in the sierras and life was harsh even isolated with winters bringing in 25' snow drifts. Often the children had gotten sick due to epidemics and today haunting this town.

I know much more remains to be seen the towns age shows dusty windows, small collapsed miner shacks, rusty bell in the tower etc its like stepping back in time at the only difference is back in the day you heard the whistle at the mill or the stamps crushing the ore. Next time I visit I have a few haunted sites to check out so again will build off the case. I did stop downtown to get a few photos of some larger structures with wrap around porches with dark eerie attics.

I want to know more this is an awesome town but the greatest asset to it really is the graveyard which contains so many notable historic figures. Even as we left still no sign of human life here not one resident not one vehicle. We will return again to finish the second half of this exploration its an old area dating back to 1849 when the first claims were worked. Id like to know what else is hidden in the forest like the miner cabins I found and stone chimney ruins. Its like another world up here and really this was the core of the town we were at while another part of town is up in near the Eureka Plumas Mine which was the mine camp portion which we would head next.
Peace,
Lord Rick
PGS Founder

Above is the Iron Door Restaurant although it was not always a restaurant very little has changed this old structure has been around for over a century. While your dining here their is plenty of relics of the past in relation to the towns early history one of them being a portrait for Macel Moriarty. Macel came to Johsnville were her family and it was one of the earliest miner families to arrive here during the gold rush in the later 1800's. Unfortunately she passed away from rheumatic fever and today she does haunt the restaurant. Below is her portrait and the homestead her family lived in with many of her other siblings. More then often it was the children that paid the price when migrating to boom towns out west due to epidemics, accidents and even the elements. John James and Margaret Ann Moriarity had eight children from 1896 to 1913 just your typical miner family with an immigrant background. John only lived till 46 years of age passing away in 1913 not to long after Macel's death.

Maybe this is an optical illusion or perhaps it is paranormal it is as good of a guess as anything else I tried to come up with. Pay close attention above as in the first photo taken by me the epitaph is missing perhaps blank. This is one of the reasons why I took a photo of it because I thought this was a burial plot that had been purchased by someone who maybe reserved a spot for permanent departure but then after studying a photo of the same gravestone taken by Tammy you can clearly see their is an epitaph etched into the stone. I am not sure why in my photo its a blank empty grave and in Tammy's you can clearly see an epitaph. Sometimes when I explore or conduct paranormal investigations I often comes across weird occurrences that defy the norm thus its not always bigfoot, ghosts or even little green men that are the cause of something like this as the incidents are closer to being fortean phenomena.
