The last time the Iron Mountain Ski Lodge was in operation was in 1995 also called the Carson Ski Resort. When I hike around this place my first thought about the lodge is that it was a place of romance, adventure and some really good powder. Today the powder remains as snow can reach depths of over 15' in the winter but the resort is closed remaining abandoned over the years which has brought it to a point of disrepair.

I do not have many details however other then what some of the local enthusiast feel necessary to share with me. Although today the resort area serves as a sno-park for snowmobiles their are quite a few explorers like myself who have taken on this place. Some of them have said they feel watched or some of the lodges dark halls are spooky. Perhaps because most of us would expect to hear people laughing, playing and inhabiting the rooms which are now empty within the lodge.

This at one time was a large resort with a main lodge, smaller Inn, lobby, five lifts, rental building, maintenance shack, fuel and water tanks. Their was also a small kitchen and locker room which I have yet to see. Perhaps this is due to the fact that some buildings have collapsed or just that I have not found everything at this resorts 1,700 acres of wilderness. Their was also a caretakers house near the lifts and at one time they oversaw the property once they left everything went to hell. Shamefully many people came to the lodge to spray paint, do drugs, steal whatever they could find and vandalize the property. I have been in city buildings in better condition then what I witnessed here. Despite the fact that the resort opened its doors in 1970 the place looks as if a century of history barraged its walls.

The main lodges lower floor had bunk rooms on both sides of a narrow hallway that looked like small dorm rooms. Those rooms would have up to four bunks per room with bathrooms at the end of the hall. While those that shared these bunk rooms also had to share shower room. The upper floor of the main lodge contained a more standard type of hotel room with den, bedroom and private bathroom. The entire lodge perhaps was a bit backwards considering that the ski area and its runs resided below it. I have read there is a basement underneath the lodge that does remain to be seen given that certain areas today area not as accessible and that the snow drifts can bury the entire building finding such sites in the cooler months hide allot of this resorts secrets.

In the early 1990's the facility were modernized minus the upper floor of the lodge which still contained older wallpapers while the bunk rooms had plain white sheet rock walls and ceilings. When they abandoned the lodge they had literally over a ton of ski rental boots. Over the years people have stolen them probably even sold them for profit illegally if only one explorer were allowed a pair per person but instead people literally robbed the place for everything its worth leaving hardly anything behind but debris.

When the resort was in operation it had five working lifts in total which some no longer exist. The Timber Lift today can be seen still standing and it has all if not most of the chairs still hanging on the cables blowing in the wind. Another life named the Little Rabbit Life has no chairs but the tower and its cables are still attached for the most part. Another Life called the Wildcat I did not see as its located in a separate area seems to be in good shape but their are no chairs hanging from its cables. The Eagle's Nest Lift appears to be for more advanced skiers has a few very deplorable towers standing while others had been removed. That lift is erratic as some cables and chairs are visible while others are missing. The Bruin Lift has a few towers still standing but the cable and chairs were all piled up near the summit. Please note the towers are not safe they are falling apart take it from me watch a video as I walk the plank over 25' above as that is all that is left of the flooring inside each tower. It appears in the early 1990's the resort planned on even expanding even more by purchasing more chairs and lifts. Those never came to be as the chairs remained piled in the parking lot since its closure.

The resort had quite a shady past as at times it did not operate every winter season. As a matter in fact it had a series of closures due to a history of bankruptcies but I also read that it suffered from liability Law Suits as well. If someone sued the resort due to an injury it literally disrupted the heavy cost to operate a resort of this size. The snow resort also resides in an area that snow can literally cause closure of the pass which meant no business. I seen a photo from years ago where the entire lodge was underneath snow you literally could not see the second floor let alone the roof to it.

In 1998 the Iron Mtn. Acquisition Company, Inc. also known as IMAC sold the resort to the Sierra Acquisition Co. Inc. thus the permit to IMAC was terminated. The company that purchased it did not submit a proposal for the area to be used for special use authorization to operate the ski area as IMAC did previously thus they filed for bankruptcy in 1999. After this mishap the La Montana Inc. purchased the resort and was going to operate it as a ski area. However the Forest Supervisor at the time did not consider the proposal due to the fact that he wanted the site to be used in the publics best interest based on the ElDorado National Forest Plan. This would allow others to visit the area using its trails, lakes, springs and lastly as its current main use as a Sno-Park. This would cut down also on the cost incurred by the Forest Service and thus the buildings remain abandoned but the forest is very well used. During my visit in April 2012 their were plenty of people snowmobiling here and their is no doubt in my mind the US Forestry makes a pretty penny off its permits to use the area.

Sadly, despite the many attempts to revitalize this place as a ski resort may never come to light. In some way, shape or form despite that the lodges lights will never glow during a winter storm is a downer the fact is that it now is left behind so that explorers like myself can share its history. Nobody knows for sure if the site is haunted or if at one time Bigfoot has taken shelter at this location during a very harsh winter. I guess that is where The Paranormal & Ghost Society comes into the picture bringing you this alluring resort in the heart of the Silver Basin of the high Sierras!
