Honanki and Palatki are considered sisters sites and may just be some of the largest Cliff dwellings in all of Red Rock Country Arizona. These heritage sites were built within the cliffs of the red rock in the Coconino National Forest between 1150 and 13000 A.D. The tribe that lived in these dwellings were ancestors of the Hopi people who are said to be some of the first humans who emerged from the hollow earth. The name Honanki means Bear House while Palatki means Red House. A very well known archaelogist studies these sites by the name of Dr. Jesse Walter Fewkes who was sent from the Smithsonian. He founded the names of both cultural sites and gave the world a better understanding of who these people were who once lived amongst the red rock. The Sinagua were known as basket weavers they lived very peaceful lives and grew crops near their dwellings. In addition they made tools from stone, leather and wood. In the forest they hunted black bear, deer, rabbit and gathered edible plants. The name of the tribe in English means "Without Water" who eventually vanished some feel they moved southward while others thought that hostile invaders may have been responsible for genocide. Despite the fact that the dwellings date back to 1100 A.D. the rock art and petroglyphs in the area show otherwise. Some of them date back as old as 10,000 years ago and are considered more archaic in nature. My son who was hiking here discovered an artifact which we handed over to the musuem at Honanki. At least three types of tribes came to this area and this wall art was being done in the stone age here all the way eventually to historical grafitti. In the early 1900s erosion and vistors literally destroyed the area some experts feel that almost 90 percent of this ancient city is gone. I heard that some of the visitors would come out here just to dig up the bones as souvenirs. I wanted to thank the park rangers for sharing with me special information on the location and giving me a more private tour to some of the locations some people do not get to see. The work we do here is important and we work with all agencies to conserve such sites. At each cultural site you may see what appears to be a shield on the rocks above each ancient city. This marking was to help identify the tribe and relate to the people living there. Some theorize that those shields may have been hexes or maybe symbols of protection according to Anasazi culture whyile this is true the Sinagua were more peaceful so all that is left to speculate is that it was more of an emblem for outsiders to view passing by this ancient city. To tour Palatki you must have reservations and its very peaceful here to a degree where if you dropped a pin anyone and everyone is going to hear it including Grandma. Trust me I know I arrived here stepping out my car and was like sighing that I needed to toke one up which is kind of funny because the rangers heard me and told me how the Singua people would smoke marijuana in there dwellings for spirituality. They did hear me and told me to use caution when talking out here lol but its all good the people at Palatki were wonderful guidance service was stellar. One of the rangers told me they live out here for tranquility and I thought to myself that is my reasoning behind my work. My work is peaceful and we are able to pass that solitude onto our fans who have enjoyed our site for so many years.
