Subject: Our
Bigfoot Expedition At Bowman Lake California & Graniteville July 8th thru
10th of 2016
Date: 7/11/2016 4:14:45 PM Pacific Standard Time From: lordofthynight@aol.com To: ParanormalBuffalo@yahoogroups.com, ParanormalGhostSociety@googlegroups.com, paranormalghostsociety@yahoogroups.com, ParanormalGhostSocietyConnections@yahoogroups.com, TheParanormalGhostSociety@yahoogroups.com, SupernaturalFlorida@yahoogroups.com, ParanormalCalifornia@yahoogroups.com, ParanormalNevada@yahoogroups.com, Paranormalflorida@yahoogroups.com, sierraparanormal@yahoogroups.com, PGSPhantoms@yahoogroups.com We had just left Bowman
Lake after camping up here a couple days and were heading to the semi ghost town
of Graniteville. While there are signs in the area pointing to Graniteville we
did not decide to go up there till we finished off our research, exploration and
recreational fun up at the lake.
Bowman Lake sits below
Graniteville so in order to get up to this semi ghost town you have to
physically take this rugged dirt road out of this lake basin and over a ridge
into the dense forest. Then the road is rugged for a few miles its very slow
going. You never want to go to fast unless you want to get a flat, break an axle
or even worst.
For a mile or two we had to
drive along the narrow road of Bowman Lake then eventually there is a road you
take that is very easy to miss. But eventually you begin a steep ascent and end
up with some really great views of Bowman Peak below. The scenery is simply
gorgeous of Bowman Peak, Red hill and the lake.
Eventually though you enter
the Tahoe National Forest well we already were in it but the road levels off and
goes through the heart of it. Its so dense that you cant even see no more then
20 to 30 feet in some parts of the forest here. It seemed like it took us
forever because again it was slow going. This is not the normal road you should
take to go here but if your camping and want to go up to Graniteville this will
take you up there its just a little less common of a
journey.
There are signs every now
and then pointing you in the right direction. There are other dirt roads you can
take to Bloomfield and Allegheny which are awesome historical semi ghost towns.
Hell both are larger then even Graniteville but we would only have time right
now to visit this location.
I did make a few
wrong turns heading up here you have to understand their are various dirt roads
that branch off of this one. Sometimes its easy though to get side tracked and
miss a turn at least from my experience journeying back here. I did go up to a
group of people in trucks and jeeps to ask them some general directions. The
girls hanging out were pretty smoking with the crowd I thought to myself I bet
they have beer and there is a party happening here lol. Their
directions were not much help of course!
I bet some of these little
side dirt roads are old mining roads their were quite a few mines in the area.
Some of them probably are lost to history I mean this area is old 1850's old.
The forest is so dense and your really up in the sierras just miles of forested
mountains. Because of where its situated its hard to get bearings you see no
peaks, no landmarks or anything. Just miles of single lane dirt roads in the
middle of the forest. I seen some roads that were overgrown just going to
nowhere.
I remember before I turned
off in town I went the wrong way ended up taking this road a few miles back. I
was not even sure where it was leading but there was two fallen logs in the
road. My guess is storms came through knocked a tree across the road causing one
of them to fall onto the road the other one looked cut. I was barely able to
clear either one and as the road had gotten to rough I turned around. I was a
bit scared to be honest because I had a carrier on the roof of the jeep held by
rope and though I am screwed if the ropes break then what will secure it with
all our gear? So I had to turn around!
Before you get into town
you cross this wood bridge its rather old up by what is Poorman Creek. There is
a really pretty ravine the creek runs through and its so green up in here. For a
short time we also followed another stream as it meandered through the forest
its so rustic back here. Then you start to see a few cabins and eventually older
historical homes till it opens up into downtown Graniteville. Downtown has a
couple cross roads and a big wood sign surrounded by purple and white flowers.
Its a quaint little town kids were running around playing and some guy yelled
out to me its going to cost me a dollar to take that photo I told him sorry all
I have is a 20 and he said he would take that jokingly.
People seemed really nice
waving etc life is really quaint and perhaps wholesome up here. I know though
during the winter months its more like a ghost town. I have seen photos in
recent times of the town being buried under 7 foot snow drifts. This place is
high up in the mountains. I mean you have so many structures just sitting back
off into the woods just a hundred feet off main street. I seen an outhouse,
historical homes, shanties, couple old stables, wood cabins and even a fire
engine. Just outside of town along some of the creeks and ledges there is a few
rusty pipes to from local mining.
Their are no businesses in
town I been to some semi ghost towns that had a saloon, inn, restaurant or some
small commercial business but not here. I could see some of the older structures
looked like they were sided, renovated or once were businesses. One of them
structures looked like an old hotel while another a saloon. But now folks have
decided to turn them all into weekend and summer homes. In the case of an
apocalyptic zombie invasion life would go in this town because it is isolated
from the rest of the world. I mean there are only a few ways to get here and all
are dirt roads along cliffs, ravines and steep drop offs so its a rather
protected place.
I did not spend much time
downtown I just did not want to bother any of the locals. Its hard to know what
is abandoned, private, lived in or forgotten. I seen a house that was abandoned
and down a hill I seen a couple of stone and wood structures. There is this barn
who knows stable that has similar features where the bottom half is stone the
top half wood. This town had mills at one time hard to say if the mill sites
were turned into homes or if old barns are being used today as horse property.
Lots of cozy little homes back in the woods and many old
structures.
If you drive a quarter of a
mile past town you will come up onto the cemetery. I passed it because its
tucked back in the woods surrounded by dense forest. The trees around this town
are huge especially around the cemetery. This area never got lumbered like other
parts of the sierras they just built the town in the national forest. Plus fires
never plagued Graniteville like they did other nearby towns so lots of trees and
very easy to pass historic sites which I probably missed some no
doubt.
The cemetery is surrounded
by a chain linked fence there is a little metal green sign that says on the
fence Graniteville Cemetery. We let the dogs run around I did some filming and
photography. I always take EVP in cemeteries fascinating stuff you can get at
places like this. There are quite a few wooden grave markers particularly
crosses in the back. The oldest gravesite dates back to 1855 I never did find
it. Their are newer interments mixed in with older ones in some cases you might
have a few pioneers buried with current family members of today. So you have
many generations of family buried here because many of the folks today who live
in Graniteville had ancestors who were miners or resided here in the 1800's.
This is a peaceful place so
green, lush and if you look out towards the front you can see afar this huge
forested expanse off in the distance. I never seen one person or vehicle by this
cemetery it was so quiet I could hear a pin drop. Originally the only thing I
had plans to do was get to the cemetery but to see Graniteville too was really
awesome because now I can put the town with the interments here. Its not a fancy
cemetery no more then 60 to 100 graves lots of open unmarked spaces. Storms are
bad some wood markers probably were lost. I could not help feeling watched at
this place not sure what it was its just very foreboding I guess considering you
have miles of woods around you and up here in this area its hard to get
bearings.
I would stop in
Graniteville but did not stay long Tammy felt out of place here and said she was
creeped out just being here. I did not feel that at all I thought folks were
friendly and more welcoming then other semi ghost towns I been to. But she just
said she felt out of place and its natural I mean their is not much left that is
abandoned folks have fixed many of the homes here up to live in. Some homes were
once saloons and other businesses to. Many of the homes though reminded me of
the houses up in Buffalo NY where I grew up. Just tall two story wood homes with
an attic and a front porch. Many of the homes had big long windows and some even
had large 200 year old trees growing right up near the home. I bet more
structures would still be here if they did not have a fire back in the 1870's
but that fire burnt down more then half the town.
I did want to get out of
the mountains so we could not stay much longer on my way out of town I seen the
old school house but I thought maybe it also was a church because I seen the
bell tower in the front. It sat back in the woods I could not get a great photo
of it. I would have drove up to it but was not sure if it was now private since
there was five mailboxes at the beginnings of the dirt road heading to it. Its
hard to know because someone may have turned it into a home or is using it for
storage on their property. But the school house is an original part of this
towns history and when you see little structures like this it lets you know that
their is some history to this settlement. Just that allot of it is hidden or on
private property so it makes it harder to do my job because I want to be able to
share photos of these places with the world not because I am nosy but because
history means something to me and our organization.
The road out of here was
long and slow its up on cliffs for miles with hairpin turns. The turns are all
paved then as they straighten out your back to bumpy sections of dirt roads.
Even though the roads are not bad you have ruts, holes and rocks that roll down
the side of the mountain. I remember seeing a boulder half the size of my jeep
on the road. But eventually the road will descend and you will come out of the
forest along a massive canyon. The views are terrific I could see the Bowman
Lake Dam and views of the Elephants Back which is this geological feature we
once climbed. The Elephants Back Expedition which took us to Lake Winnemucca and
Front Lake was amazing that we did. Someday some of you should check it out just
click the link you'll see! Even though I could see the entire thing from far
away and despite how close it looked I knew it was a mirage. In fact it was not
close at all but to think I stood on it and probably see this location I was
driving at from its summit now the roles were reversed just
wow!
Eventually we drove through
Washington which is a semi ghost town still very well preserved and their are at
least two cemeteries here. I did want to stop but that is for another trip
Washington has plenty to photograph and check out. My main concern was to locate
some grub and start to head for home. I mean it was a long few days we were cut
up, tired, muddy and camped out from Bowman Lake. I wish we had more time I
wanted to make it up to Weaver Lake which is to the SE but its okay will camp
there in the future its more of a camping trip bigfoot type of thing
anyhow.
Eventually we hit the
Interstate 80 where we went west stopping in Truckee to get some Panda Express.
It was awesome to have some hot healthy good food especially the veggies all
steamed along with Beijing Beef. I parked at the old train yard in Truckee so we
could watch the trains go by while eating our Chinese food in the jeep. I was
exhausted by the end of this trip believe me we spent a couple days backpacking
miles then I spent a half of day offroading in the high sierras and explore
Graniteville here and there.
I am not sure ill return
back to Graniteville again but I can say it was a great adventure in an area of
the Tahoe National Forest so many people never get to see. I got to witness
gorgeous scenic views, hike around the forest, explore history and get out to
meet some of the locals. Its hard to know what is down all these dead end dirt
roads some of them are in bad shape. The area is very vast and I am sure some of
the old original structures are haunted. By the time I had gotten home the
carrier on top of the jeep had moved from being jostled on the journey but it
held up and did well my first time using it thanks to the ropes holding it.
While I may not revisit this place again I do look forward to our trips to
Allegheny, Bloomfield and Washington coming up in the
future.
People tend to overlook
Graniteville only because nobody really knows about it or its history. It gets
less attention because it lacks any services unlike Washington below the hill.
But it was one of the earliest placer and hydraulic mining towns during the gold
rush. As a matter in fact it really is not that far from Coloma to be honest
with you so that is only reasonable to understand or envision miners following
the Yuba River and eventually reaching this place. It had to be a rough trek
back then there were no developed roads even though some are old wagon routes
they still today are very rough so I cant imagine traveling them any decade now
or then. But I can envision what this town use to be like just from my short
visit and for me that is good enough! While much more remains to be seen some
things are better left put to rest!

A creepy sign just outside of town that says Still Laughing! I am not sure what it means and yeah its not paranormal but it also is not welcoming either. I think someone was being cynical when they wrote it and leaned it up against the tree. Because this was just a mile or two outside of town where the road begins doing hairpin turns on cliffs. Its a crazy ride to get to this place but even a more crazy journey to descend off of the sierras from here. You have ravines, cliffs and its very remote down this rugged single lane dirt road. Nothing to laugh about hence the cynicism. |
An end to a very long journey starting at Bowman Lake and then our trek to Graniteville. We were tired from all the rugged offroading, hiking, climbing etc. All we wanted is a hot meal that of course was healthy so we had taken out Panda Express then took it over to the Truckee Railyard to watch the trains. It was a good meal minus the fact that we had two stinky dogs panting on our foot they probably wanted it as much as we did. Truckee was really the only town on the way home that had any food readily available as Graniteville has no restaurants; so it was a long ways just to finalize our evening with some grub and fill our tummies! |
