Gold Hill NV Masonic Cemetery is divided into 4 different areas. They are the Masonic being the main burial ground, Catholic, Odd Fellows then the public section. The reason why I did not divide this into separate explorations is that this cemetery has blended together into one giant graveyard. There are areas of the graveyard you can see boundaries but most of the fencing is down, mangled or just missing.

The cemetery overlooks the ghost town of Gold Hill Nevada a very haunting mining town that experienced a boom in return allot of different cultural diversity. This diversity can be seen amongst the segregation of various religions in the region. In Virginia City the cemeteries have more prominent borders but the burial ground above Gold Hill has been lost to time and vandals.

The cemetery is very deplorable you can see it in the photos and their are many more graves that look all the same. My mission isn't always to seek out ghost we know we can get EVPs or ghost photos. I been doing this work for years and when I say I am good at what I do I mean it. However the other story to all of this is to expose such locations so that its an eye opener to the public. People need to understand that these burial grounds are in dire need of restoration and something has to be done about this.

When you walk into this cemetery you have stones crumbling and brush consuming stones. Hell some stones are broken while others you cannot even read. This doesn't even go with the fact of how many unmarked burials their are here. Allot of the folks buried here were miners they shaped the Comstock surrounding Gold Hill and American City. When they passed on they were brought up to the hill then buried. Allot of the burials here were masons most of them have some really nice epitaphs and engravings but very few stones left to enjoy even that type of architecture and workmanship.

I am saddened by its condition and I do not feel its police watched enough. Now I know some like myself will go here out of appreciation of the paranormal and that is fine. However the vandalism of this location has to stop and if I see you causing it I will kick your ass. Ill also arrest you and take you to the police station myself. I just will not put up with that bullshit these people died show some respect it is all our society ask and the families who have three generations of ancestors buried here. Background

     Gold Hill was named by James "Ole Virginny" Fenimore and others after they 
discovered a ledge of high grade gold ore while prospecting in 1857.   About 
two miles south of Virginia City, the town's fortunes rose and fell with the 
boom and bust cycle of the Comstock Mines.  By 1865, the town had three 
oundries, three fraternal organizations, two newspapers, two banks, four stage 
offices, a large business section, and three lightly attended churches.

     Six mines in the vicinity of Gold Hill were some of the most productive on 
the Comstock Lode, producing several million dollars worth of gold and silver 
by 1880 when the main lode played out.  Many of the men buried in the Gold Hill 
Cemeteries were miners and many of those died from accidents in the mines.  
Most notable was the fire that consumed three mines on April 7, 1869.  The fire 
began at the 800 foot level in the Yellow Jacket Mine.  Just after the morning 
crew arrived in the mine it collapsed and exploded sending fire into the Crown 
Point and Kentucky Mines.  Thirty-seven men lost their lives and it was three 
years before all smoldering traces of the fire were extinguished.

     The Gold Hill cemeteries once flourished with flowers and ornamental 
plants irrigated by water piped from the Sierra Nevada.  In 1997, both 
cemeteries were in poor shape with many headstones missing or broken because of
vandals.  The elements have taken a toll on elaborate wooden rails and posts 
used to designate grave sites and the flowers and plants have been replaced by 
sagebrush and desert grasses.  A past grass fire damaged a number of grave
sites.  Both cemeteries are on public land administered by the Bureau of Land 
Management (BLM).  The BLM is currently cataloging and photographing headstones 
in both cemeteries.

     The sources used to compile this record of the Gold Hill cemeteries 
include headstone inscriptions documented by the author, burial records 
compiled by Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in the mid-1950's, and 
burial records compiled by the Daughters of the American Pioneers in 1960 
(DAP).  The author thanks Eileen Kessler, Reference Librarian, Nevada State 
Library and Archives for supplying copies of the DAR and DAP documents.
