We are off on another adventure as we take it to the Flume Trail up along Lake Tahoe's rim. The ride starts off fairly bumpy as I am trying to hook up a bike came so we can record certain parts of the ride which takes us all the way up to Lake Martlett and deeper into the sierras.

I have attached the new bike cam definitely allot smoother then trying to hold it and mountain bike up the Flume Trail. As you can see we are surrounded by vast forest and all that resides between them is the trail. This area at one time was used to carry water to Carson City and the Comstock using flumes. Today it is one of the top mountain biking trails in the country.

Most of the entire trail is uphill unless you are working your way home to lower elevations. Even the strongest mountain bikers were caught walking there bikes up some of the steep hills found in these parts. It would not be an easy trip it was either conquer the sierras or let them conquer us. This would be only the beginning.

On our way ascending onto the Flume Trail we made a stop at Spencers Cabin which was an old cattleman's home. At one time the forest around Tahoe were home to cattle herding today this cabin serves as a reminder of that. I found the cabin to be nice and cool a great spot for a break with the kids. It is almost a century year old thus it is a piece of history along with many others that surround the Flume Trail.

We actually parked out bikes on up here then went for about a 1 mile hike near Wildcat Cabin. At the time I thought it was a good idea to search for some tracks in the region. Throughout the bike ride there are all sorts of little stops you can make and rest at this area seemed like a good area for just that.

We found in this area a broken fresh tree limb and fairly large track off the trail. Whether it was human or beastly the fact is something came through this area. If you notice whatever it was had strength, height and size. By no means would this limb break without a certain amount of tension thus I theorize that the possibility of it being Bigfoot could be considered. Later on just an hour after this video was shot I captured a UFO photo and my son claims he seen a very large hairy creature staring at him through the woods when he fell off his bike. So all of this raises suspicions that maybe this area may have something cryptid.

Just like many other regions of the Sierras this one is home to a seasonal brook caused by the snow running off the upper peaks found along the Flume Trail. Along these brooks more then often are meadows of wild flowers and other wild life. These brooks are great areas to cool on off at and make the ride all the more scenic. At one time the locals were able to utilize all this water to construct a flume that would bring water to the Carson Valley area.

Sometimes when you are biking on the Flume trail there never appears to be an end to it. However with views of Lake Martlett like these it definitely makes all that hard work worthwhile. The top of this hill would be our final approach as we would ride right on down to this very secluded lake. This site is one Lake Tahoe areas best kept secrets and here we are standing on a mountain overlooking this pristine lake its so amazing.

The shores of Lake Martlett reveal many surprises such as this old shack and even large unknown tracks along its shores. At one time this lake was home to a historic cabin site. Today folks enjoy taking the Flume Trail around it or even diving into its cool waters via rope swing. Strangely where I shot this video I also photographed a UFO above this lake. I do believe there is some level of strangeness found in this area perhaps however its beauty mask the unknown to all its adventurous visitors each year. I just knew it was great to finally be at our destination.

This historic chimney was once part of the Leonard Cabin Site which was at one time home to a couple who lived on Lake Martlett. The cabin was accidentally torn down only later to be restored. The couple formed the Virginia City Water Company. Other then there cabin only two others were found at the Martlett Lake site which includes the Caretakers and one for the Rangers in the area.

The Flume Trail will physically take you all the way along Martlett's shores to an old dam site. The ride is very scenic and it may be one of our most favorite sections of the trail due to its ripply hills and gorgeous views.

Although there are many obstacles along the Flume Trail one of the most unique is the part where the trail submerges underneath Lake Martlett. The only way through it is to walk or ride Jarrod decided to walk. Its a nice area as to where you can cool down or sit up on the dam to enjoy the breeze that comes from Lake Tahoe from the west.

Now its my turn to ride across the lake and ill tell you what its pretty challenging as the water deepens. This is what makes this such a great trail is the fact that you cross season creeks, lakes, mud puddles, patches of snow and eventually some of the best views of Lake Tahoe. It wouldn't matter if you were able to cross this lake or not during the summer it provides natural air conditioning after miles of mountain biking.

This dam separates views of Lake Tahoe and Marlette as it is found on the western edge of the lake. This is a great area to have a picnic which we did before heading back for home. There is also a small creek which trickles behind the dam going down into a canyon that eventually drains out near Lake Tahoe. The trough is used in stocking trout for Lake Marlette and the kids are having a great time playing in the crystal clear cool water.

This was a very exhilarating experience for us as we parked out bikes at the Lake Martlett Dam then proceeded to climb a series of rock formations until we made it to the top where views of Lake Tahoe gave us some rewarding views. Below us we could see the Flume trail continue on which eventually follows Lake Tahoe right to its shore. Our journey would end here however not for nothing as by the end of our day we would come out of this trip with visits to Spooner and Martlette Lakes. We hiked and rock climbed without any shoes much like the Washoe did at this location for many centuries at one given time.

The road home would include one more trip across the lake via Mtn. Bike which would eventually take us along Marlett's shores. With the sun starting to set this ride would get allot more beautiful and much cooler for the journey out of here.

Our journey home would take us along Lake Martlett's shores on the Flume Trail. Most of our ride home would be downhill for many miles which would make the ride allot easier on us. At times going downhill can be very hazardous with loose rocks and dirt. This would only be the beginning to our journey back to civilization.

The journey on the Flume Trail was more then just a tale about something strange in the forest. It was a tale about two brothers helping one another complete this journey even if one of them had to ride the others bike to get him up that sandy hill. Most of the ride back home was downhill however there was a couple places we had to travel up hill and at times the best thing to do was get off the bike and just walk it up.

This is a clip from my bike cam where we start off at the top of the mountain heading back home on the Flume Trail. The problem is that going downhill means encountering loose rocks and dirt making it very easy to lose traction. The beginning of the ride you can see the ride is going well however I am picking up speed. I hit a bump then the camera seems to automatically get shifted off to the left. For over a minute all you can see is woods passing by very fast I pull ahead of my son then at about 2:40 into the video you hear me brake then the camera goes black. Seconds later you hear my son calling for me. I was on the ground somewhat stunned as I was thrown 25' over the handle bars hitting my head and landing on both my wrist to break my fall. When I stood up to brush myself off the camera was still filming but the screen was black so I shut it off thus I call this clip "The Accident"

This is the scene of the accident notice my bike its facing the opposite direction and from what we examined I was thrown at least 25'. I had about 2 more miles to get to the truck however both of my wrist were injured and I did hit my head pretty good. Getting off the mountain after this incident would prove very challenging as at the time I could not even squeeze my fist together so grabbing the handle bars at this point would seem pointless or rather impossible due to the pain.

I am done resting now were about to try this again I re-hooked up the bike cam and I am going to try to take it slow. The problem is that both my wrist are injured so I cannot squeeze the handbrake nor can I lean on the handle bars its extremely painful. I would have to learn how to ride down the flume trail without causing myself to much pain.

The sun is starting to set and in this video you get a good clip of what riding on the Flume Trail is all about. When I seen Spencers Cabin I was so grateful as I knew beyond this point it was a pretty easy going ride back to the truck. Was I sure glad to have made it this far now I could rest a little while and tend to my injuries at this cabin.

We have made it back to Spencers Cabin now its time to rest before the final jaunt back to the truck. The cabin was built in the 1930s and serves as a rest stop for those who tread on the Flume Trail. This is an evening tour of the cabin both inside and outside.

This is our last run till we make it back at the truck near Spooner Lake. The sun is starting to set it was a very successful bike ride minus the little accident. The area was very beautiful and we did get some paranormal evidence on our journey.

Home Videos Out At Spooner Lake Spring Of 2011

I filmed this clip in the spring and as you can see there is still snow up in the region. The snow is actually covering the Flume Trail. The kids were diving in it and I just couldn't resist. This was my first visit to the area and after that I decided it would be cool to mountain bike here once the thaw set in. Also in the video is a lizard on a rock. Despite the patches of snow found throughout the area the lizard was a sure sign that summer was soon on its way.

Its the spring of 2011 this is the Spooner Lake Flume trail parking area. The kids were having a good time playing in the snow and that eventually led to a dirty snowball war. Goodtimes I say this is an area that offers so much to all kinds of people from mountain biking to fishing to even playing in the powder.
