Since 1860 the Comstock Lode has been protected with the hard work of volunteer firefighters. The same fire fighters who battled the fire within the mine as well as the great fire of 1875 in Virginia City. After about twenty or so years of service you would be considered eligible to be exempt or retired as a firefighter. Some of the firefighters did retire while others continued their many years of service and dedication.

Even though the firefighter is exempt they could still retain all the benefits of one that is actively involved. As a member of the volunteer fire dept. their were many benefits that an exempt firefighter would have which includes not having to respond to calls. They could however be involved with social activities such as the holiday parades and things of that nature.

This cemetery is dedicated to those firefighters who served the Comstock. I also believe that almost every burial within the cemetery are firefighters who either died while battling these fires or they were veterans who were buried here so we could remember them for their years of volunteer service.

The fires in the Comstock were dangerous and since the mid 1800's the fire department has had dozens of firefighters. If you were buried within these grounds it symbolized the social group you belonged to. Much like the Masons belonged to the Masonic Temple....or the Order of Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias etc Over the years cemeteries like these been consumed by Silver Terrace Cemeteries.

However the Exempt Firefighters Cemetery is the closest cemetery to downtown Virginia City then any other burial ground. Also this cemeteries boundaries are very well defined by a white picket fence. Many of the graves are deplorable its just not fair these men were heroes they fought to save lives its important to honor them. Most of the epitaphs within this cemetery are carved in various wood markers with the firefighters helmet as their emblem. Just as other social classes had their own emblems just as the Order Of Redman the Firefighters used the helmet as a symbol of their dedication for over a century.
