Subject: Our Fun Exploration Of The Eureka - Plumas Mining
Camp and Jamison City California
Date: 5/24/2016 3:02:38 PM Pacific Standard Time From: LordOfThyNight@aol.com To: ParanormalBuffalo@yahoogroups.com, ParanormalGhostSociety@googlegroups.com, paranormalghostsociety@yahoogroups.com, ParanormalGhostSocietyConnections@yahoogroups.com, TheParanormalGhostSociety@yahoogroups.com, SupernaturalFlorida@yahoogroups.com, ParanormalCalifornia@yahoogroups.com, ParanormalNevada@yahoogroups.com, Paranormalflorida@yahoogroups.com, sierraparanormal@yahoogroups.com, PGSPhantoms@yahoogroups.com We had just left the Johnsville and our journey to the Eureka
Plumas Mine Camp had begin. Keep in mind that their are quite a few historic
sites a couple miles from one another. I wanted to work with this area a bit
more while I seen the historic boom town of Johnsville I also wanted to see the
mine camp where it all begin which led to civilization here deep within the
Plumas National Forest.
Honestly its not that far away Johnsville and Jamison City
were only a mile apart with the mines or rather camp being in the middle of it
all. I did not know what to expect but I will say the things that I did see were
rather preserved and I felt as if I had stepped back in time. Honestly, it was
getting a bit chili out we were almost near summer and it was snowing on all the
peaks around us. Its kind of weird when you are catching snowflakes at the end
of May lets put it that way lol.
But you start off going down this road which follows the creek
where at one time placer mining was being done. This creek had quite a bit of
gold in it that often ended up in the raging waters as rain washed it off the
mighty sierra buttes which overshadow this camp. I stopped at this big open area
to look at the volcanic buttes and there was a patch of forest getting fresh
snow near the summit as the trees had a fresh dusting of powder on their pine
needles.
I found this small old structure it was made out of wood with
aluminum roofing and siding. Perhaps an old mill or remnants of the camp.
Supposedly their is a hiking trail we passed that takes you out to Jamison City
and its Mine. I never made it out that way just did not have time to see
everything. But I am saving the Jamison Mine and town site for our next trip so
we can hike on in do some exploring of the remnants that do remain nestled in
the woods.
When I arrived at the dead end of the road we reached the
mining camp. Nobody was around they had turned the old boarding house into a
museum and if your lucky you might get access to some of the buildings which at
the time were closed. I am not sure why because I really did want to see more of
the inside of the structures that stand. But it is apparent that a barn, assay
office, blacksmith shop and boarding house all stand. They are almost like brand
new despite their age the state did a good job restoring everything here all the
wood structures are painted red and white.
Their are a few views in between the trees of Eureka Peak
covered in snow then again there was some winter weather that seemed to be
surrounding us. The sun was trying to peer through the clouds but for May it was
chilly up here. The winters up in this camp were harsh so it made it a difficult
are a to reside in and often children died up here from illness while miners had
a hard time even leaving there homes to work up at the mines.
The grounds are scattered with ore carts, kegs, hydraulic
water cannons, machinery and blacksmithing tools. Honestly, their are so many
relics of the past related to the mining that took place here it is one giant
outdoor museum. I am a sucker for rusty artifacts and I cant even identify them
all but at one time they had their fair share of usage when miners worked the
Eureka tunnels.
I did walk around took some EVP and even some Gauss readings.
While I am an explorer I also have to stay on myself to always seek out the
paranormal no matter where I go. Sometimes places turn up to be haunted some
places dead air or nothing rather. This place has history people lived and died
here that is just a fact. This is a very secluded area it sits back in the woods
the forest is dense and supposedly their is much hidden in those woods. So I had
wanted to explore what I could but took an hour just relaxing on benches looking
and studying the mining artifacts everywhere.
I ended up exploring
the Mohawk Mill its a few stories high sadly its in bad shape inside
all the stamps are gone, piles of wood with nails everywhere, holes in
the roof, creaks everywhere and wind howling through the holes in the
walls. Their is foundations inside and collapsed stairs also so you
have to climb around. Their is this giant wheel on some axle also. I
had to be careful the floorboards were missing, broke, weak etc and its
a long ways down when your standing on the second story. You could tell
nobody has been here for years the place was dusted and their were rat
droppings everywhere making it not very safe to breath the area here
again a risky mill but worth exploring.
I climbed up the mountain and found above the mill the Eureka
Tunnel its in bad shape. You can probably go in so far but when I was here there
was a couple feet of dirty water and it was just flowing out of the mine so the
entrance was also very muddy. I did climb around on some support beams and such
to get inside for a better photo and I hope when I go back I can actually go
deeper in to take some EVP. I am sure miners died I mean you had 65 miles of
tunnels surrounding this camp this was not a small mining operation.
Near the mine is two structures one may have been part of the
tram system which went to the peak. Both structures are wood and collapsed. Then
again who knows maybe they were part of the mill here actually Eureka Mill but
more so these buildings probably held the hoist and other machinery for
the miners to hitch a ride down to camp or the gold ore. Their was this giant
rusty metal wheel which confirmed my theory. This area also has great views of
the peaks its open less woods around it. I heard higher up on the mountain is
remnants of the old Eureka Mill. I heard that their are some secret sites in the
woods but they are not easy to find the camp is very scattered.
After I explored above the Mohawk I made my descent back down
onto camp. Their is quite a few trails off limits some places you need to book a
tour to see. Although I did find what appeared to be a small dilapidated miners
shack or maybe for TNT or black powder storage house for blasting. I did spend
sometime at the boarding house also but today its a museum and yes it was closed
not a soul in site. Well I seen a ranger cleaning up the garbage cans up here he
was nice told me if I needed any info or help to let him know.
Sadly I filmed a one hour tour of this place and realized
months later the footage went missing so I am bummed out. I cant dwell on it
though I can go back soon again focus on Jamison City do some more filming and
photography. You really cant see everything in one outing here anyhow. But I
have to say its well preserved what started off as a tent camp grew into a small
settlement with wood structures. This is just a pretty place flowers were
starting to bloom to some species I never seen before.
Before I left the camp I did make the two mile rocky jaunt up
to Eureka Lake which takes you along these cliffs which overlook for many miles
a dense Plumas National Forest. The views here are gorgeous of the peaks and
mountains its so vast up here. I had to be careful though the entire road is
loose rock and most folks hike it but I drove it easier on my ankles and bad
knee. I was lucky I did not get a flat but when I arrived at the lake which
resides just below the rocky snowcapped summit some blue skies starting
appearing.
This is a pretty lake
they have a trail you can take which goes around the summit
then comes back down and loops around the lake. The peak is
gorgeous full of cliffs, rock formations and snow with trees growing
throughout it here and there. When I arrived there was some ducks
swimming around and honestly the shoreline might be a good prospect for
Bigfoot tracks since the back end of it is rather marshy. It probably
would take maybe an hour give or take to get to the top of the peak
from the lake for anyone who might want to summit this beast. This is a
volcanic peak with a lake below often known as gold mountain and it was
called that with good reasoning. Hell this is where mining took place
was on the mountains quartz ledges. Then the camp and town were built
further below. But the miners camped on this lake and filed mining
claims which word spread then things took off from there. Its hard to
believe there are miles of tunnels in that peak which end up coming out
below where the ore could be brought directly into the mill for
processing.
I wanted to hike but I had a journey to go to Beckwourth
Cemetery so I had to get going. I wish I had more time but sometimes due to gas
prices I bundle my explorations in the same region because its easier that way
rather then go out individually to each location. But when you stare at this
mountain the one thing about it is that this is the birthplace of skiing in the
western hemisphere. The miners would ski this peak at 80mph and they would take
the tram back to the top using it as a ski lift since during the winter little
mining went on. So when you see the remnants of the tram near the mine you can
imagine that this is where the miners jumped in ore kegs just to reach the top
so they could ski down the runs in the 1860's.
The view here are solid this is pretty country even seen a
couple small ranches with horses on them. I cant say for sure how much I seen or
did not see or missed. This was a town at one time with hundreds of people and
at least a century of mining so I believe their is much more to see. Id like to
investigate the inside of some of the structures maybe get some access into the
mines but generally the two major mines while open here are flooded and that
water is like ice and shafts are also flooded so not in the mood to go swimming
but will see if in the future they dry up a little. I do want to see more up
here especially Jamison City which is near the mining camp and of course
Johnsville a mile or two away.
Our next location would be in the town of Beckwourth where we
would make our way to a historically haunting forested cemetery near an old
wagon road where some of the first pioneers utilized in the mid 1800's to travel
the high sierras and make there way to all these small settlements in the
region. Its a nice area scenic, historic, rural, lots of ranches and remnants of
old towns along with various lakes. I also found the emigrant trail which runs
through the camp which at one time had thousands of wagons and stages coaches
traversing it during the gold rush. This is a very intriguing area to explore
and I been slowly working with it like for example on the other side of the
sierra buttes is this semi ghost town called Sierra City although its must
bustling then Johnsville or this mining camp it was the miners that traveled to
and from such nearby locations.
Before I went out to Beckwourth I did take a drive to a place called Butterfly Valley. I wanted to go see this butterfly garden as well but ended up driving an hour down dirt roads never finding the place. Their was just dozens of wet mountain roads because in the Spring snow melts so I almost got stuck a few times. But driving along the Feather River allowed me to see the scenic route and old trestles that the Western Pacific traved for decades. So in a sense it was cool to see some WP history while heading out to Butterly Valley. Their are some ranches and homes back in the woods up here just in the woods real remote no stores for miles or even gas stations. I was out hiking around when two dogs chased me down the dirt road barely made it out of there I filmed it but again I lost all the footage. But lets just say this was your typical crazy Lord Rick adventure. Some of the dogs are very territorial back here its hard to believe this is a site where families go visit butterflies more or less it seemed like I was in a wrong turn movie taking unknown dirt roads, driving in circles, traversing cliffs, muddy roads and after the dogs chasing me down the road I was done ready to go to Beckwourth Cemetery where it was quieter and where I would not get mauled to death or chased by some crazy mofo. Peace,
Lord Rick PGS Founder |
This is where it all begin beautiful Eureka Peak. The trams ran all the way from the top of this peak down to the mine camp or rather the Mohawk Mill which ill post a photo of below. The mill is haunted that is where most of my EVP came from. The birthplace of skiing transpired at this location in the western hemisphere as the miners would take the tram to the top then ski down at 80mph. Lets just say over the years quite a few deaths have occurred whether it was from the elements, accidents in mines, illness or simply old age. But the first men who came here camped on this shore then mined the outcroppings and ledges on this peak. If you travel 20 miles from this peak from far away it looks massive that is because this is a massive mountain what your seeing is only the peak of it so its extremely a picturesque sight to see one that the miners seen when the first arrived here also minus the picnic bench.. |
