Eternal Flame Falls is located in the Shale Creek Preserve near Chestnut Ridge. A few people wrote me about this place and the question most ask is it haunted. I hear during the day this is a pretty busy area with alot of hikers, families picnicking and dirt bikes on the trails. The creek is a branch off of 18 mile creek. The preserve is only open till 7pm and of course I know the reason. It is very easy to get lost so if you hike there please be careful. This is an area that is old Indian ground some trails are over grown and some are unmarked.

The flame is quite hidden and a pretty rough hike as you have to make your way down a steep ridge. During the colder months the creek is filled with rapids and higher water. Some people tell me this is very sacred ground others say the Indians do not like people to hang around here. One site had a ghost photo taken near the falls. They call this the eternal flame because there is a hole behind the falls that released natural gas and when you light it the flame burns red to purple it is very pretty. Some say the flame blows out fairly easy however we spent a half hour here and the flame kept going strong as it was blowing out the rock behind the waterfall. I do not have alot of history on the area but the land is beautiful, the forest is very thick and the whole creek is made of shale stones. They break as you walk on them.

We wanted to investigate this to see if all the rumors were true plus it fits into the ancient mysteries categories. We were pretty adventurous and we climbed down the falls which is pretty high up it isn't an adventure till you conquer these falls with just your body strength alone. That feat in itself is that of a true warrior and sure to make the Indian spirits proud. This is an area that should be respected and as I will say I do not recommend going at night unless you got a good sense of direction, alot of lighting, and you have some hiking experience.

There is a 2nd flame located on the preserve we have an idea where it is but we could not get it to light perhaps some mud covered the hollow. Eternal flames are not as rare as some think every state almost has one. But what makes this one so unique is that it is behind a waterfall. Although I cannot say if this area is haunted I can say I do not feel alone here it is a very foreboding area and one trail took us roughly an hour of extreme hiking to the road. What makes the area so unusual is that anybody or anything could hide in these woods and of course an ex investigator of ours did climb one of the cliffs awhile back ago. The question is though what significance did this flame have to the Indians? Do their spirits guard it?

Note a Grinch asked us to remove a winter photo of the eternal flame claiming it was taken by him which is fine. We do not steal material we just share it so those can appreciate the beautiful of these haunted and mystical places. We do not earn profit off our photos although some seem to think we do and anybody who makes the acquisitions is more then welcome to see proof of this. We have the right to use anybodies photos since this site does not charge its members to view it nor do we claim some photos to be ours unless they are copywritten with our logo. The photos are primarily for those who browse as a form of reporting and criticism on the location. Because of this incident I was forced to replace the waterfalls photo with another one taken awhile ago no big deal its just the point is its nonsense and its hassle since merely its just a photo of a small water fall that anybody could go and take. Then this person asked us to remove a homemade button that is our own I mean come on how ludicrous is that? So upon browsing this page realize all photos here are not our own and can be used freely as long as they are used for educational purposes and viewing only. People would benefit more if all they asked instead of removing it was a link back to there site since this person did not then I guess all our members from WNY will not be browsing his site. I scratch your back you scratch mine.
