Duplex Mine

This would turn out to be the long investigation of the night. I had no idea what we were in for or all that would be involved but I enjoyed this hike. The hike would involved two giant hills....which would at times overlook the town....and to add to it we had a nice bright moon coming up over the mountains to the west.

Tammy and I parked behind an abandoned house we found a small cross behind the home and an old mine road with an iron bar in front of it. This would lead us down an old mining road where we would spot some old railroad ties. Also a giant water tank on the side of the hill.

Prior to following the mine road we came across an old warehouse with pallets of material. We did walk around in and behind the warehouse. Their was a rather eerie feeling back here nothing out of the ordinary I just felt out of place. It seemed like almost they still mined in the area to a degree.

My legs felt pretty good so we took the road to the top of the hill. The Duplex mine sits within these two hills one larger then the other with a saddle between them. The mine actually overlooks the town its pretty unique considering how far most mines were from other towns.

The climb up the road was fairly steep and as I came to the top the moon was just glowing over the horizon. Its been awhile since we actually had a decent moon. I didn't even really need a flashlight which helps keep down on the locals chasing you.

I found an area with barbed wire around it their was an old mine chute and boarded up shaft. Their was also a very rusty desk more then likely remnants of the mine office on the hill. I found piles of wood and aluminum roofing. I also noticed quite a few electrical boxes....these giant wheels.....and rusted machinery. Near the chute was a furnace of some kind.

The chute itself was still in tact fairly good shape....with a giant shaft below it. In the shaft to the left of it was a very deplorable ladder and to the right of that was a set of rails...with a mine cart at the base of the shaft entrance still in tact and braked. I thought to myself how awesome it would be to climb the ladder down but the two issues were if the mine cart were to come loose it would topple on you and if it didn't the ladder would probably break causing you to be stuck in the mine.

I was hoping for a solid tunnel entrance but this mine rather went down then branched out so their was no way to explore the underworld to searchlight. I did however enjoy photographing all the pieces of equipment on the site. Tammy thought it was pretty cool to considering how rare it is to find an in tact mine cart still on its rails is like winning the Californian Lottery serious!

The rule is when exploring mines is you never go in an area you cant back track from. Near the main shaft was another shaft perhaps imploded its hard to say but it was an 8 foot pit. We found around 6 of these on both hill sides. I am not sure if they were imploded or just started and mining stopped due to the fact no minerals were found. Generally you keep digging until the quartz vein stops perhaps this was the case.

I enjoyed the nice view of the town from the top of the hill then took us into the saddle. As we climbed the taller hill we didn't find much of any signs of the mine till we arrived on top and began to climb on down. The hike down the giant hill was rather stressful. It was full of loose rock.....and Tammy fell a couple times including onto a cactus. Its just part of our explorations you live and you learn. If I was down south id be in swamps fighting alligators....if I was up north id be battling ice.

I have learned how to ski on rocky slopes so I did allot of switch back hiking and sliding all the way down. It seemed this hill had no bottom after a couple hundred feet I was wondering when does this end. We found a few old blank wood signs.....a possibly unmarked grave....and even a well.

When we got around half way down the hill we found a few plateaus good places to look for mines. I found an area with a quite a few TNT rusty boxes. Near it was a shaft a very steep one went down about 50 feet I could see the bottom. But that is all it had was a bottom it did not even appear to have a tunnel system. I thought about climbing down it afterall their were some rocks to grab onto the issue is how sturdy are they or does the mine take another turn in the shaft at the bottom. So I photographed it and we moved onto an area where their were many shallow pits or possible imploded shafts.

The Duplex mine really wasn't as large as some mines we visited but both hills appeared to be a victim of early mining in Searchlights development. Off in the distance as we started to head towards the expressway we could see a trailer at the bottom of the hill we avoided it. Like I said mines are in folks backyards.

As we followed the bigger hill around rather then down low and behold I seen the golden arches of McDonald's I felt rather saved. I am not sure why I wasn't in the mood for a big mac but I at least new we were not far from the road and off this treacherous hill. But if you see golden arched consider yourself saved.

Tammy and I hiked to this big open area we actually went around the entire series of hills where the Duplex Mine was erected. We found this flat area of land not much brush or anything. The area had a giant crater about 15 feet deep. It looked like an asteroid hit the area I am sure this wasn't the case it probably was strip mined. But still this crater was very perfectly around. I thought it was odd not something you see all the time. Tammy and I followed the road through the desert and ended up near some buildings.

I found on my hike back on the opposite side of the hill the Colton Memorial with above it a series of stones that spelled the word Colton 1897. We actually followed this alleyway down reminded me of being in the city. The alley didn't have rats or anything but it was pretty dark and an odd predicament considering we just got done hiking for a couple hours now we were in some alley way backpacking our way through like hey everybody PGS has arrived lol.

As we took the road back we came across a house with a vicious sounding dog barking...snarling....didn't see him but I had hoped it was on a leash or at least in a fenced in area. Little did I know later we would have an encounter with Kujos twin serious. After this investigation we headed on over to the Hobson House.

I think the Duplex mine was a great exploration we found allot of things just exploring the hills. The moon was out....and the skies were clear. We even found a mural on the back of a building of the old west I had fun with that one.
