Dayton Historic Cemetery is one of the oldest in the state of Nevada with perhaps Genoa Cemetery being the first. The cemetery was founded in or around 1851 and is very well maintained unlike many of the other pioneer cemeteries found within the Comstock Lode. As a matter in fact the trail to the mother lode passed right through the cemetery as today this wagon road can still be seen.

Prior to the cemetery allowing more then other ethnic backgrounds to be buried here Italians predominated it. As you tour the historic section most of the names are Italian while allot of the masonry work is as well. It was the Italians that used the land and irrigated it with the nearby Carson River which made it the breadbasket for the Comstock which included towns such as Virginia City, Silver City and Gold Hill NV!

Over the years the cemetery has suffered from vandals thankfully the town maintains this place and has repaired allot of the graves in despair. I was amazed at the condition of most of the stones here. Allot of them date back to the 1800's but look to be in fairly good condition. I felt it would be a great place to do an investigation given its history and age.  As a paranormal investigator our goal is never to see ghost but to preserve each and ever places history the ghost are one of the perks that come with it.

The cemetery perhaps is most well known for some of its interments the first one being "Old Virginny" Finney a native of Virginia who was credited with discovering the Comstock Lode and giving Virginia City its name. Of course today their is allot of doubt that he discovered it as more or less he guarded the property where two brothers discovered Silver here first. Nonetheless he stayed in Dayton and the Comstock through the winter as where back during the gold rush claims nobody did. As a matter in fact when he stumbled across Dayton at the time the settlement nor the cemetery ever existed. Little did he realize that one day he would be buried in it overlooking the town he spent most of his time in. Although he was the town drunk he would not live long enough to enjoy the fruits of his labor perhaps a downfall of his as he was not an educated man to began with so he really never made it to the big leagues like other tycoons in the region.

The "Old Virginny" grave site was vandalized years ago where someone pushed over his stone smashing it in 2009. James Finney was one of the first miners to have worked his way up the hills searching for gold at higher elevations as to where most prospectors didn't see it at first as lucrative. Most miners stayed in the valley where Dayton NV is located at currently while many of the washes and creeks above the town led to some very large claims. However due to such discoveries the mining camp of Johnstown had developed in 1851 which today is no longer visible with the exception of its mines. I believe within a reasonable distance Finney ran a trading post besides investing most of his time with his claims.

Some wonder how James Finny came to be for example how did he end up where he ended up in such a secluded region? As some of you know the Gold Rush brought prospectors from all over the world. When the prospectors traversed the mountains and deserts of NV they would stake a claim then generally build a camp around it. Some camps turned into towns while other camps were abandoned. More then often when a large amount of deaths began to occur cemeteries had to be erected this is somewhat the case with the Dayton Cemetery. Just above the cemetery in its canyons were many large mines and these miners sometimes died thus were buried in the cemetery below.

Some folks say that James Finny was having an issue with another man where the two got into it perhaps a shootout and the other man had possibly died. Perhaps James Finny made his way over the Sierras ended up near Dayton hard to say as this was common with most prospectors in California. Although he was nicknamed James Finney his full name was James Fennimore. Others say that James Fennimore was a teamster who traveled with the Reese Party who were responsible for erecting the Mormon Station in Genoa. Many of the Mormons mined the valley while James was curiousty pushed him to look for gold a little bit deeper. They say that Finney never came to Gold Canyon alone that he had others working for him perhaps this is where the tale of two brothers comes from. The tale about how one brother passed away while the other brother abandoned his claim leaving it in the hands of "Old Virginny"who took the claim for himself nobody knows which one holds more truth but the fact remains that this man was one of the early notable pioneers that came to reside in the region.

Prior to his stone being vandalized their were some inaccuracies for example James Fennimore did not die in 1865; he died in 1861 at once engraved on his old tombstone prior to 2001 had otherwise stated. Tragically in 1861 James was drunk and decided to ride a man by the name of Tyler in Dayton's mustang. I guess Tyler was in Dayton eating dinner at a hotel leaving his horse tied up outside. Back in the day it was not uncommon for men to ride down from the Comstock Lode into the town of Dayton to enjoy its saloons. Afterall they didn't call it the wild west for nothing their were no cars or trains everything you did was by horse when you pioneered your way into the lode. Anyhow, Finney died in Dayton after being thrown from the horse as he hadn't even made it 300' when it threw him fracturing his skull tragically at the time he was only about 44 years of age.

When James Finney had passed on he was buried on the hill overlooking the town of Dayton. I am guessing it was not in the best of spots as the body would eventually be relocated. There was at one time some question if the right body had even been moved or exhumed however the mere reasoning for this would be to perhaps move his grave closer to the cemeteries entrance or within the boundaries of the cemetery. As at one time burials were erratically found throughout the hillside and those who were not Italian were often not allowed to be buried within the Dayton Cemetery's borders. James Finney had very gray hair so based off that fact is what his old acquaintance went off of but their is afterall no certainty as many miners had gray hair at the time locally in the region. So its possible that James Finney's body may still be up on the hill and the current grave is that of another miner just another mystery connected to the cemetery and unmarked graves that may surround the hillsides overlooking the town.

It is a fact that Old Virginny didn't mine allot sure he made claims but whenever he needed money for whiskey is when he would work his claim. More then often he would sell his claims just for a little extra cash. One of his first claims would take place in 1858 on Sun Mountain where he stumbled on the rocks outside of the Ophir mine smashing a bottle of whiskey accidentally. The Ophir mine was one of the oldest most massive mines of the Comstock thus many of the miners were probably watching shaking their heads thinking their is the local drunk. Making light of the situation so that the whiskey did not go to waste James Finney christened the location stating "I baptize this place as Virginia Town named after the state he was originally born in. The other story in how
Virginia Town received its name was that one of the miners who encamped at the Ophir Mines picked it to honor Old James Finney who first laid a claim on this land.

Now that I covered the main attraction found within the Dayton Cemetery lets talk about some of the other notable burials here. For example the grave of Edward Lovejoy the son of Elijah Love Joy the first abolitionist martyr to the Free press prior to the Civil War. In 1837 Elijah was killed not sure how but his infant son and mother ended up in NV. He built a bar in Wabuska in Lyon County just outside of Dayton. In 1891 Edward was buried in the cemetery just to note that little bit of history.

Another notable buried here is Charles Hinton Russell who was a governor of NV from 1951 to about 1959. Although their are not many politicians buried here this governor was alive when I was born and passed on in 1989. Another notable burial here is of a man who founded the Nevada State Museum, Judge Clark J. Guild who passed away in 1971. Many of the burials found today within Dayton Cemetery played a huge role in Nevada's history but also were good hardworking people who made Dayton what it is today which is quoted to be one of Nevada's first settlements.

Today the eerie glow of dim green lights illuminate this burial ground that overlooks the town of Dayton below. Just as above the cemetery the old wagon trails lead up into the mountains of the Comstock Lode where the worlds most richest mines once existed and the wildest ghost towns are found. Nobody knows for certain at how many interments never made it into the cemetery as coyotes howl on the barren hillsides. But one thing we know is that much history and mystery surrounds this historic gem!
