 Just NW of the city of Reno practically on the Nevada/California border is the small scenic town of Verdi originally known as O'Neils Crossing for the man who built a log bridge here spanning over the Truckee River in the year of 1860. By 1867 The Crystal Peak Toll Bridge and Road Company was formed by a J.P. Foulks and M.J. Smith.  Prior to this the route was discovered by Caleb Greenwood in 1844 which provided an alternate route to travel through the Truckee River Canyon which traversed through the town of Boca California along the Boca Reservoir, Stampede Reservoir, Truckee, Henness Pass Road and Highway 89 today. No less this route brought in many pioneers to the region while some came here to mine others came here to work on the railroad. Therefore Crystal Peak was established to serve those who sought trade within Dog Valley. When the Central Pacific Railroad was completed the town vanished supposedly today if you look hard enough you can still find a few foundations something will eventually do research on. The town also had a post office from 1864 to about 1869 which is about how long the settlement of Crystal Peak lasted for.

When the settlement was established it was merely a major milling town as a matter in fact it served as the terminus for receiving railroad ties so that the CPRR could be built through here. Their was quite a few short lines leading to various lumber camps to the north and west of here. The lumberers would cut the trees down then they would load them up via railcar shipping them to Crystal Peak where they could be cut down to be used for ties for the railroad. Back before it really grew into a major town it was merely a stage stop for those seeking supplies or to even trade. Some of them settlers came down from Dutch Flat, Iowa Hill and Truckee as well as Donner Lake via stagecoach.

By 1864 the town was platted instead of folks passing through some were actually settling here as a matter in fact today's town of Verdi is only two miles from the original town site of Crystal Peak was located. I believe they called it Crystal Peak because the summit does overshadow the entire town site including this cemetery which is one of the last remaining remnants of the original town.  The Crystal Peak Company actually bought up allot of land out here to be used from timbering and mining. When Crystal Peak diminished the town of Verdi flourished and grew thanks to men like Oliver Lonkey of the Verdi Lumber Company who for many years lumbered the mountains surrounding the town which in turn could be shipped from here via railroad. Sadly a great fire in 1926 burned many of the forest surrounding the town and such companies also depleted most of it thus leaving very little behind causing the town to go into decline. This does not including all the earthquakes which have occurred here over the years as a matter in fact from Feb. 2008 to June of 2008 an earthquake swarm began causing approximately 5000 quakes. So the area is prone to disaster between fires and tremors as it has been for many years probably even prior to the first white men arriving here.

Verdi was named after Giuseppe Verdi by a Charles Crocker also the founder of the Central Pacific Railroad he is also buried at The Sacramento Old City Cemetery today. Back in the day they could not decide what to name the town so they put a few slips of papers in a hat then pulled the name of the Italian Opera Composer in 1868. The name is pronounced as Vur-dye. In Spanish the name means green and although this is a very green mountainous valley most people misinterpret the name or even how it was founded. If you drive around Verdi you can see some history surrounding the town for example old wagons and some historic structures line Main Street. In a sense Crystal Peak and Verdi blended into one town its not as bustling as it was in the 1800's though. Today allot of wealthy people own homes here and why wouldn't they the scenery is gorgeous it is also a very quiet community. Their are some perks by living in a town like this for example its home to the Sasquatch Tavern and Boomtown Fun Center both of where can be found integrated into this addition on our website. I always try to keep our website fun, friend and family orientated so that all of you can be a part of what it is were trying to do here.

The Cemetery just sits on the outskirts of town the first recorded burial that transpired here was that of a 15 year old girl named Rebecca M. Dunn on January 15, 1864. The second burial then took place in 1867 a few years later.  We are not sure why the cemetery was established at the location it was erected but I read that the Native American burial ground was here first then others begin to bury there loved ones next to it. Sadly today nobody knows where the ancient burial ground is since all the graves are unmarked. Also within the southwest corner of the cemetery is an open area which was said to be where the Chinese Railroad workers were buried who worked on the Central Pacific Railroad. Its hard to know for sure since most of the wooden grave markers are gone or many graves were simply unmarked. The Chinese came to the region to do one thing and that was seek work for the railroad. Although it did pay they were paid very little and allot of times these men died on the railroad. The railroad which goes through the center of town is a reminder of these emigrants hard labor.

From the 1800's till about WWII the cemetery remained neglected perhaps even forgotten especially during the depression. Many of the graves were weathered, elements had destroyed most of them and it was very overgrown. Their was no organization that even controlled or owned it. By 1949 a group of locals decided to restore the cemetery by grading it to clear the land then installed a new fence around the perimeter. In 1955 other interested parties began to the task of forming and organization to operate the cemetery. The cemetery at the time sat on Herbert Kronish's ranch. In 1970 the Verdi Cemetery Association Inc. had formed and by 1984 with careful negotiations with the Kronish Estate the existing cemetery was deeded to the association. Since then they have visited many funeral homes in Reno to obtain its records comparing them with the graveyards tombstones that were preexisting. In 2003 a group of Senior Citizens donated 30 headstones to be placed on many of the unmarked grave sites and adding markers to those that had been lost. So far research has revealed there is at least 248 interments and today the cemetery is fully back in use after so many years of neglect.

So as you clearly see in a sense this is more then just a cemetery but a relic of the towns early history. I love Verdi allot of big old houses downtown some very historic, scenic views, evergreen trees and perhaps even hidden secrets like Crystal Peak which vanished off the maps only to be replaced with today's present day Verdi. Its an ideal place to retire or at least live with the beautiful river which cuts through the middle of town. But I cant say my experiences with the locals have been all that exciting for example their is an old saloon its abandoned in bad shape someone put an electric fence up so you cant even explore it and take decent photos of the structure. Then while we were in the cemetery someone kept stalking us in their vehicle driving by parking down the street watching my kids and intruding on our research project. Lets not forget also that Stephen Paddock who committed the worst shooting massacre in American history which killed 58 people in Las Vegas also injuring hundreds also owned a house here and was a resident of this small community.  I really hate mentioning this scum's name but my site deals with factual information and therefore I am not saying anything that is not true. But do not let this factor sway you in visiting or enjoying Verdi's railroad history or its beauty as this was an old settlement which in turn was responsible fro Reno's growth which today is Nevada's second largest city!
