Ever since I relocated to the region in 2011 I have visited the Crown Point Mill and Yellow Jacket Mine many times. Each time I visited here I became more intrigued with its history and haunts. Allot of people over the years have forgotten that this was the site of some of Nevada's worst mining disasters. This has led to other paranormal groups theorizing that the old Gold Hill Hotel may be haunted by the miners which also resides on the mines property.

The Yellow Jacket yielded about twenty million dollars in Gold and Silver reading depths of over 3,000 feet. It remained opened from 1859 to roughly the mid 1900's. When the vein was discovered here the miners prospecting uncovered a yellow jackets nest hence its name. Nearby the Yellow Jacket Shaft was also the Kentuck and Crown Point Mines. No less eventually mines such as these would be interconnected much like an anthill hundreds of feet underground which made the work very risky. These were some of the deepest mines in the world today one can stand outside of the deep shaft peering into the darkness and get the feeling that this pit feels bottomless.

Despite the fact that the mine is older then the processing plant they both remind us of the locations history. The incline shaft and head frame were built in 1937 just two years after the Mill was built. This mill would process gold and silver. In actuality I have seen more in tact machines at the Crown Point then any other mill I been to in the state. At one time you can imagine how sophisticated of an operation it was as the Yellow Jacket and Crown Point mines ore was processed. At one time ore was brought up to surface where it would hit the chutes then drop down onto a conveyor belt which then dropped down to the mill below.

There were other Yellow Jacket mills and shafts to be precise about four scattered throughout Gold Hill such as the East Yellow Jacket Mill or what is left of its stone ruins today. It was amazing how the Comstock had risen to be one of the richest mining regions in the world. But it was also for some either meant boom or bust. Without the mines towns like Gold Hill Nevada would never exist as at times the Yellow Jacket would employ a 1000 men easily working in little light using candles and lanterns. Lumber would be shipped to Gold Hill from the sierras to be used to secure walls below the surface. These wood beams and supports were often called "Cribs". These mines were very intricate containing miles of tunnels and multiple levels. Just like the mill with its very steep staircases the inside of the mines were very much the same. The spaces were very tight to work in and breathing the air alone at this depth was always a hazard. Not just the heat and poor air quality were an issue but new veins had to be blasted which felt like an earthquake with every major blast of TNT.

In 1869 a fire began at the 800 foot level a little west below this location. The fire grew so intense that it caused the wood on that level to burn when it burned it spread. The timbers began to collapse eventually that smoke spread throughout the nearby Kentuck and Crown Point mines. Alone it was not just the fire that had killed many miners but the carbon monoxide as at those depths some of the men could not even see where it was they had to go make an escape for their lives. If it were not for this disaster occurring during a shift change the body could may have been in the hundreds but it is speculated that as many as 45 died that day nobody knows for sure. It is known that at least 35 miners met their doom here while some of the bodies were never even retrieved for proper burial. The fire fighters did enter the mines but the flames were red hot and the smoke was to intense that the ability to rescue the miners was nearly impossible.

There was no other choice but to seal off the levels as to where the fire had spread burned for a year and the rock remained red hot for at least three years after the incident. Despite the tragedy the work continued a few weeks after this incident and before the levels were sealed everything was done to contain the fire for a few months which had proven to be a very discouraging task. The incident did not deter anyone from having Gold fever and thus we can only honor the memories of the brave souls that gave there lives in 1869.

After the fire it led to a couple political consequences the first being that Adolph Sutro stated that due to the lack of funding for his project that if it had been built it would have saved lives. The Sutro tunnel was at the time not built till after this disaster. It goal was to connect the Comstock Mines with the Carson River Valley in Dayton. Some of the first mining in the state of Nevada began in this region and each parcel of land nearly had a claim. The disaster was used by Sutro as a wain to gain support not sure though it would have saved the lives of the men with this type of disaster. The tunnel did get support and eventually it connected many of the mines of the Comstock together so that ore could be moved around more easily. The Sutro would travel as far west as American Flats a massive ore processing mill that is extraordinary haunted as well just to make note of that for our readers.

The other incident occurred three years later when John P. Jones the Superintendent of the Crown Point Mine ran against William Sharon a Comstock banker who was running for the U.S. Senate. Sharon accused Jones of starting the Yellow Jacket Fire for stock manipulation. Due to his accusations the market actually crashed and Jones ended up winning the race. Nobody knows how the fire was started it could have been a lantern that was knocked over that perhaps is one of the bigger unsolved mysteries to this entire disaster.

Another tragedy less talked about took place in 1873 just a few years after the fire broke out and was nearly forgotten. At about the 1,300' level north of the Yellow Jacket shaft at a blacksmith shop underground started on fire. Many theorize that it was caused by a spark during tool sharpening for the nearby Belcher Mine. It started as a fire where six men were affixated and eventually some of the TNT caught on fire. Multiple explosions shook Gold Hill Nevada causing damage to the Crown Point and Belcher mines as parts of that level collapsed.

The firemen that came to the scene couldn't do anything as the fire took place where there was not allot of timber so they felt it would eventually die out. The damage was minimal as the gas caused some to get sick while others died from Carbon Monoxide poisoning. Albert Lacky who was a foreman of the Belcher mine had his face and arms burned trying to save his men. He also suggested that blacksmiths no longer be built inside mines. Work commenced the following day despite the explosions and minor fire that took place. Today some feel and I do to that many of these tunnels which are no longer accessible are haunted by there ghost of the past. Even today its been reported that machinery can still be heard running coming from the mill and its surrounding buildings despite that its been inoperable for many years.

As you can see this is a large ongoing project which will involve other projects we have planned in the future totaling three cases so sit tight. Very very few people ever get to see the Crown Point Mill which at one time in the earlier 1900's had given public tours. Today there are no tours just scattered debris surrounding the mine, skeletal remains of many of the structures, mangled TNT boxes, piles of earth which was processed then scattered on the hillsides and the many pieces of the past. Its a very large operation and there is much more to come believe me in regards to the various Yellow Jacket sites surrounding the mill. Our only goal is preservation remember mines, mills and abandoned sites are very dangerous. Stay out and stay alive!
