Colonial Park Cemetery sits in the heart of downtown Savannah. Like most of Savannah you have city squares and each square has a historic point of interest. This square happened to be the cemetery which actually stays open very late cause of the popularity of ghost tours that take place here. I was in the cemetery during one of the ghost tours and I laughed to myself because I am doing the real thing and guys like us we do not get enough credit for the hard work we do. But it is also funny to watch human nature as people enter a cemetery scared and hoping to see something when in fact all the see is PGS's founder roaming this historic place of the deceased.

The cemetery is only about 6 acres but its set up much like a park and the last interment to have taken place was 1853. It is the oldest intact municipal cemetery in Savannah GA. It also has been called the old Brick Graveyard, Old Cemetery, South Broad St. Cemetery and even the Christ Church Cemetery. It was in use from 1750 to about 1853 so yeah this is one of the older places during our visit to Savannah that took place.

Rumor has it that it has over or did have 9000 burials. I do not see how you can almost count the amount of stones just by walking around. I wanted to make it a point that when the cemetery could no longer contain any more burials in 1853 they continued to bury others on the plantation site of Laurel Grove so technically they are both share a bond. What makes this place so unique is that all the people of Savannah during this time period were buried here till they ran out of room. Some of the burials in Colonial Park were moved to other cemeteries cause of it being overcrowded.

The problem is over the years the cemetery had begun to be defaced like most old historic burial locations. The city wanted to build a courthouse or even a railroad in the cemetery itself. At one time a wall use to surround this place and when the last of the wall was about to be torn down Christ Church nearby tried to sue to save it but failed. Of course the city one our government always gets their way. The judge did rule however to protect the remaining graves with historical plaques and convert it into a city park. In 1896 is when the cemetery received some restoration.

The markers were placed by the GA Historical Commission which tells stories of the states history and Savannahs events tied to these figures buried here.  Near by is the Hampton Lillibridge House which was moved near the cemetery by a Jim Willaims who was the protagonist of the “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” He is supposedly the one of the ghost that haunt the home perhaps even the cemetery. But also the park is the site of two girls being murdered here by a Rene Ashche Rondolier who was also lynched here for those crimes.

There are alot of ghost stories that tie in with this place but its not as eerie as you think. Alot of people are out walking around it and in it at night. Its very well lit also and alot of cars drive past so its hard to get a good paranormal investigation. Alot of tall tales perhaps who knows but it is a very significant location and that is why I visited it! One of the famous stories is that of a ghostly couple often seen floating in the cemetery some even said they are seen decapitated. The cemetery is known for its ghost tours and alot of the stories told are very horrifying anotherwards the place has a DARK history!
