Gold was discovered at this site in about the year of 1909 then after mining began the mill was built a short time after. You can say that the Chemung Mill and Mine were a part of the Masonic Mining District which was part of a mining town nearby in Masonic California.  The mine itself was a fierce competitor with some of the major mines up in Bodie. The Chemung Mine produced over 1 Million dollars worth of ore during its operations. It was discovered by a man named Stephen Kavanaugh who named it after his hometown in Illinois. The Kavanaugh Ridge southwest of the Chemung Mill was also named after him where the ghost town of Dunderberg is located.

The mill ceased operations in about 1938 it overlooks Bridgeport lake, snow capped sierras, dry lake bed and many unique rock formations. I cannot say that their is a more beautiful place is your going to visit the mill you will not be disappointed with the scenery. It is perhaps to this day one of the most well visited and photographed mills in this region of California despite its deplorable conditions. It was the last mine and mill to remain open in the Masonic District.

As some of you know I love a good paranormal tale especially when it intertwines with history. I am not sure how these tales start perhaps people mistaken certain noises for ghost but I felt compelled to visit the mill myself to maybe catch a glimpse of a ghost they call "Old Geezer" who chases out explorers from time to time. I did not run into any ghost and although the mine was rather creepy to explore its narrow corridors I found the place to be more historic then haunted.

Perhaps the mill is haunted by its owner after he was caught cheating his employees thus they threw him down a mine shaft so his ghost may just continue to watch over his mill. It is hard to tell I have read numerous accounts of others experience the paranormal here I did not but that does not mean its not present. Its also possible I was not at the mill late enough most have had these experiences here midnight and on. In particular campers have been touched, grabbed and pushed by an unseen force.

Although all these stories are rather fascinating I think the unique architecture of the mill itself precedes any other mill so far I have visited in the west. That is why rather then posting them as thumbnails for you to click I have enlarged them on this page in full for our viewers to enjoy. I always try to bring our viewers the best of both worlds which includes a bit of the paranormal, history and adventure all combined.

I also read that despite the mills closure in the 1950's and 1960's a prospector by the name of Elton Heinemeyer called "Heinie" lived on site working the two mine tunnels behind the mill solo. I guess he never struck it rich but found enough to support himself on. Those that visited him always said he had nothing but free time on his hands and I can see why considering the seclusion here. Today the mines are barred off however I did manage to make my way into one of them to complete our exploration to its entirety and the accessible parts of the mill that still were standing.
