There is roughly 4 cemeteries surrounding the island of Cedar Key. But this cemetery here is on the island right overlooking the bay. I will not need to do a huge history write up on this place since most of the tragedy...historical information...and overview are on our Cedar Key Page so basically you get the idea of the burials here. Of course one of the most famous burials is that of St. Clair Whitman.

This is an old cemetery it dates back to probably the mid 1800s. Alot of the stones are fishermen with anchors...clam shells laying atop of the mounds...and rusty wrought iron fencing surrounding them.

Its probably the main attraction for most amateur ghostbusters on the island they come here after the conferences to look around. Personally myself I was more intrigued with its historical look then the ghost. There are little hills all over the place with many old trees that drape over the stones. With the fog over the water....and smell of the sea it truly was a magnificent visit.

One of the most oldest eligible graves is of a woman named Alice from 1873 of course there are signs that the burial grounds are older since in the mid 1800s rumor has it that many of the bodies buried here washed up and were moved to another island near by.

Each year the prison workers clean up the cemetery a little bit. The locals look at the cemetery a park rather then burial ground and they have a board walk you can take that runs along it if you just want to take a stroll along a salt marsh...or its old tombstones. I think alot of the graves here look older because the storms and sea have had its way deteriorating much of the stones inscriptions on the graves.

Some say its one of the most oddest cemeteries in Florida as some graves are covered in shells the shapes of caskets while others have painted benches next to headstones. Some graves have wind socks while others have flags then some have yard statues you see in your garden. Much of the cemetery is covered in sand with the salt marsh...and bay right behind it.
