In the heart of downtown Susanville on the edge of the Lassen National Forest is a rail trail known as the Bizz Johnson. What allot of folks do not understand because they often pass us by is that were more then just a paranormal group. We do something that allot of other groups forget to do. We work with nature, history, preservation, conservation, urban exploration and every aspect of the paranormal.  As a kid growing up I remember spending allot of my years playing near the tracks waving at the engineers. I always been fascinated with railroading history and where there is history there is also tales of the dearly departed.

The Bizz Johnson Rail Trail goes through Susanville up to the old lumber town of Westwood which traverses two tunnels, 12 trestles and nearly 30 miles later. Allot of the locals use the trail today for birding, cycling, jogging, hiking and historical exploration. But prior to this being designated as a site to enjoy nature it all begin with a sawmill which in turn led to the expansion of today's Susanville California. The first 16 miles you hike in this canyon along the Susan River eventually you eventually leave it behind entering upland forests of pine. Its a very pretty canyon full of cliffs, dense woods, off chutes, wild flowers, butterflies and hundreds of birds. To be honest in the warmer months the trail gets allot of traffic but this can be remedied if you are willing to hike deeper into the canyon. If you happen to make it up to Mason station they have a giant statue carved out of redwood made to look like Paul Bunyan.

This canyon geologically also is very intriguing as it is resides on the eastern side of the Sierra and Cascade Mountain Ranges. The trail or old rail bed actually reaches its highest point at 5,500' in elevation. The line at one time was home to the old Fernley and Lassen Branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Nothing more then a spur it ran from Fernley Nevada traversing the high desert and eventually crossing the mountains. The route itself was chosen because it was much lower in elevation then per say other railroads in the region. As a matter in fact this railroad would reason Susanville in 1913 and eventually Westwood in 1914 a year later. Since the canyon is full of massive volcanic rocks it would take the labor of hundreds of men to blast through it. If you pay very close attention the old rail bed is very narrow along its journey. So narrow that the trees and canyon walls tend to consume it at times.

The original depot started off as a old railroad boxcar until 1913 the historic one could be built just a short time later. As a matter in fact in 1927 a second depot would be built to meet the needs of economical growth and civilians in the area. The original depot did burn down in 1989 while the newer renovated part  almost met its final fate when the Southern Pacific proposed to the Susanville Fire Department to use this empty shell for a fire training exercise. It was a good notion that the locals filed some complaints as I would have done the same. It appears that allot of the older remnants of the past in Susanville are nearly nonexistent anymore. Everything has been either demolished, renovated or fell to the numerous fires that occurred in the town throughout its history.

Its very easy to sit down on the rail bed on a Spring morning listen to the birds and envisioning the train passing through the area or a passenger waiting at the depot with their luggage. The railroad that ran through here primarily was used for transporting lumber from Westwood. The lumber was processed there then exported via train making its way all over the world. As a matter in fact Coin Lumber, Sierra Pacific and Red River Lumber Companies mainly used this line to export the processed wood. After WWI the country dipped into a recession while lumbering became less profitable other companies transformed how the railroad would be used. It served also as a junction for the Fruit Growers Supply Company and the Lassen Lumber & Box Company.

A new line was proposed in 1917 which would have extended another spur off this branch as far north as Klamath Falls, Oregon. This was because the Red River Lumber Company supposedly was going to build multiple sawmills. Sadly they could barely handle the one in Westwood the company outgrew itself. Red River had a contract with Southern Pacific and Western Pacific a competitor in the region was considering extending the spur from Klamath Falls to Westwood. Their was fear that the Red River Lumber Company may have decided to sign a new contract bailing on the current line. This may have spelled an early doom for the Fernley Lassen Railroad. The real problem is that Red River was just not ready to expand its milling operations when the Southern Pacific was ready to expand. Eventually the Southern Pacific would take over the Nevada - California - Oregon Railroad which would be used as an alternative route from Northern California into Oregon.

The railroad brought in allot of employment in 1913 as many as 1000 men camped along the Bizz Johnson you see today. Some of them built shanties along the Susan River while others may have resided up at a location called Hobo Camp. I was only about a quarter mile from Hobo Camp not much remains today but at one time the site had a sawmill and quite a few men residing at this location. Its very easy to envision a few hobos walking along the tracks near dark heading to their campsites for dinner. At least a 1000 men would be needed to build this railroad and it was not the distance that took awhile it was blasting through the lava rock found within this canyon. Many of the hobos would hop the trains back in the day this was allowed and I still think it should be allowed today at your own risk of course.

Isaac and Ephraim Roop along with a William McNaull built Lassen County's first sawmill in 1857 many years prior to the train passing through the area. Governor Roop founded the town of Susanville named after his daughter as well as the river that meanders within the railroads canyon. Roop was one of the first explorers to ever set his eyes on this canyon which begins in Susanville. You could drink a few cold beers at the local saloon then hit the river trail back in the day. I can imagine in the 1800's that is what kids did was adventured in the woods while perhaps others just wanted to take a nice stroll through the canyon. It kind of is a home away from home and honestly if you left the old rail bed there are many remote locations. Susanville is your gateway into the Lassen National Forest therefore you begin to realize that it becomes wilderness almost the instant you set foot into the canyon. One can imagine that back in the day accidents occurred such railroad deaths, children getting lost or others who may have never made it out of the canyon. When a young Perry Craig died in a mill pond I believe it was a part of Roops saw mill he offered to donate the land east of here which is known as Susanville Historic Cemetery whom in turn was the first person buried not to far from this very location.

Roop would eventually sell the mill in 1862 not sure if its due to the tragic accident or if he was to involved with other projects in relation to Susanville's swift growth as it was transitioning to be a very large town. The mill was then operated by a Luther Spencer in 1862 till 1867 when it burned down. The fire was so bad that it nearly almost spread into town and came to close to burning down the forest which blankets the entire canyon you see today. When the men who worked doing lumbering and saw milling in the canyon had nowhere to work the canyon for quite some years remained abandoned. Most of the men made Hobo Camp there home while cutting down trees and using the spur to Fernley to export them. Hobo Town remained abandoned for some years as the sawmill on site was gone. But it would not be forever vacated when this spur was built to Westwood it drew in railroad employees and with new mills opening along the spur it drew new lumbering interest.

Along the spur today if you are willing to leave the path you might see a foundation or some remnants of the past like railroad ties. People use to lumber up at Hobo Camp today more or less people fish and picnic there. I passed by Hobo Camp but our main focus of our journey is to concentrate it on the spur and the depot which nearly met an ill fat. During the later years people referred to Hobo Camp as Jungletown. Perhaps this is because its very lush and overgrown back in this canyon. It kind of resembles a jungle as nature has kind of consumed everything. It was also referred to that because back in the day it was kind of like a jungle where people came together much like animals to mingle. Some of the people who may have camped up here were probably homeless others may have hopped the train passing through deciding to stay here for a couple of days. One thing I know is that Native Americans, early pioneers, hobos and hardworking men traversed this canyon. Where there is history there also might be ghosts based on my own personal research and experiences!!

As a matter in fact I found out that when the train crossed Devil's Corral in 1913 major storms such as floods wreaked havoc here washing out bridges and possibly killing a few men during the railroads construction. I am very observant when it comes to researching the paranormal. My one major observation from our first investigation that came to my attention is that most if not all of our EVP recordings were recorded near the Depot and Hobo Camp both sites of great importance. The new spur begin at the depot then just a short distance away passed Hobo Camp which is the oldest sawmill site in Lassen County. But it also was the site of a drowning, floods and decades of human activity such as some making this place a home. It would seem that most of the signs of human activity seem to be found near the mouth of the canyon before it began's to ascend into the wilderness to Westwood!

Service begin in 1913 by 1914 the train was hauling lumber from Westwood to Susanville where it would go on out to Fernley. Once it ended up there then other spurs and major railroad lines could haul the lumber to other parts of the country. In 1952 the train stopped carrying lumber from Westwood but it did continue to carry passengers till 1955 - 1956. Lumbering begin to decline as much as passengers preferred the automobile. Also the storm of 1855 did not help as the flooding was so horrific that it tore up some of the track and washed out an entire major bridge within the canyon. The Fruit Growers Supply Company was closing its sawmill in Westwood around that year. No freight traffic meant no need to operate the Southern Pacific on this spur therefore it was temporarily closed down. Just as with the decline of lumber ships from Sierra Pacific and Coin Lumber there was no need anymore for the depot in Westwood.

For nearly 22 years these tracks were abandoned from 1956 to about 1978. When 78' rolled around the railroad spur and its depot in Susanville were used for freight shipping till about 1979. As a matter in fact this was because no money was being made back in that day the trucking industry was booming. You did not need a small spur line when you had tractor trailers ready to haul just about anything at a much cheaper cost for service. The railroad line was doomed or as some may have thought. The west at one time was littered similar spurs which are long gone but at one time the true highway was our rail systems in America.

The tracks would eventually be removed and Congressman Johnson in 1983 was a responsible party involved in helping transition it from a rails to trail system. Most folks start off at the depot and do a seven mile portion to the journey which takes you up to the Devil's Corral Trail. Along the way there are trestles, picturesque views of the Susan River and two massive train tunnels. Although the trail begins at 4,200' it does rise to 5'500' above Westwood. Bizz Johnson served the House Of Representatives for 22 years. With the help of other organizations such as the Lassen County Chamber Of Commerce, BLM, National Register Of Historic Places and a politician who loved nature the rest is history!

If you were to visit the depot today not much has changed as a matter in fact it looks like it did back in 1927. The depot that you see was really an addition to the original railroad station or complex. It had everything you would expect for a station of its day such as an express office, ticket booth, waiting room, lavatories and a phone booth. The old 1913 station which burned down near it was used for freight and baggage. When the fire occurred all that was left was the depot and it is considered one of Susanville's more precious historic sites. Sadly it was in peril at one time I guess in 1979 when Southern Pacific stopped using it someone went in heavily vandalizing it. Renovations to restore the depot transpired in 1993 and a Union Pacific Caboose resides just across the street from the depot. Today the depot serves as a visitor center and a museum so others can see train memorabilia and pieces of the past back when the trains roared through this canyon.

I did not get to investigate or see the interior of the depot they are not open on weekends and I was passing through Susanville to explore the Lassen Volcanic National Monument. But if you do happen to visit during the week I highly recommend giving the depot as much attention as you do hiking this trail. Both go hand in hand together hiking down that trail and creating memories is truly what this jewel symbolizes. The trail boast nearly 150 plus species of birds, numerous wild flowers and beautiful scenic backdrops. Despite the trains being long gone today people come roaring through here by the dozens to explore, hike and bike ride. With over 150 years of history it is no wonder Governor Roop chose this location for his saw mill, trading post and home which became all part of Susanville California.

The Saw Mill which once graced Hobo Camp. Many of the workers would camp in the woods or surrounding the mill. Behind it was the mill pond supposedly where a boy drowned and ended up becoming the first interment of Susanville. The mill burned down in 1867 it was very short lived however new ones would be built along the river further up stream from here along today's Bizz Johnson trail.
